2017, www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yorc7YIgrc. (Boonk)
1. This is just a prime example of the pure ignorance that i will be talking about during my
portion of the presentation. This is just setting a horrible example of how black people
act. There is no reason why people would do half this stuff but they do. There are even
other examples of people who followed his ignorance just to try to get famous like he did.
2. This will be super helpful to show how easy people can use stupidity to make black
people look bad.
3. This clearly just shows how dumb things can blow up to make people look popular and
even make them money.
“Media Portrayals and Black Male Outcomes.” The Opportunity Agenda,
opportunityagenda.org/explore/resources-publications/media-representations-impact-black-
men/media-portrayals. (MPBMO)
1. This article is a story about how media has affected how black men are seen just based on
how they are seen in movies. It begins to give a breakdown by certain areas and how
based on how we are represented it really does lack a healthy presentation. So now i have
more charts that i can show to prove exactly what i am talking about.
2. This will be very helpful because it not only shows me how representation can be
affected based on how much or even how we are represented in certain areas. So I can’t
wait to use this
3. Based on how much work they have done you can clearly see that not only did they do a
lot of research but also they were able to even give me more information and videos for
my research
Rodgers, Nicole, and Rashad Robinson. “How the News Media Distorts Black Families.” The
Washington Post, WP Company, 29 Dec. 2017,

1. This is all about how the news makes you black families look based on what they show
and how some of the information they give doesn’t match. When they show black
families they usually show poor families. Which does nothing but make black people
look bad and lazy. When that not the actual truth.
2. This will also be really helpful because now I have a different place to look other than
just social media.
3. They clearly did their research and know that based on multiple news sources and how
the study really affected the news. So maybe i’ll be able to find the survey.

1. This article is about how when black people do crazy things on tv it really affects people
in the real world. And how they are either shown in as athlete or criminals. So this can be
used to show how this can effect me also. Now i just have to figure out the best way to do
that. This will be really useful because i can use tv shows where black people are just
really acting ignorant and embarrassing us as a whole community.
2. I will will really be able to show how our representation is shown throughout the news
really shows how we are viewed in the U.S.
3. They have taken the time to really look into the data and information they have shown
because not only did they look at multiple news sources information but also have valid
points on how the community is really affecting us.
Williams, Stereo. “Common, Pharrell, and 'The New Black': An Ignorant Mentality That
Undermines the Black Experience.” The Daily Beast, The Daily Beast Company, 19 Mar. 2015,

1. This article is all about how during many very well known celebrities that they are
looking at racism and the way their life is differently and how they feel that as people we
could possibly be holding ourselves back by focusing on skin pigment. This gives me a
chance to show how some people view certain situations as black people and how they
put their own spin on the situation
2. I probably won’t use this but I may mention a few of their quotes
3. They did made sure that they didn't just use one person's way of looking and even went
into detail on what they meant by what the celebrity mean but on somethings you could
still see their opinion about what was being said.
“Black Media Black Issues, News, Photos, Videos & More.” The Root, Www.theroot.com,
www.theroot.com/tag/black-media. (Root)
1. This gives a breakdown on what going on in different sections of black media from
websites, sports and magazines. Its main focus is only on african american news. The
have many examples and interviews. They even have news clips about shootings and
influential topics in black families
2. This can be useful but not for my part of the project do i will most likely not use this
website.
3. This is a credible source they have multiple links to the information on their page
although some of the ways they talk you can tell its based on their opinion.
Smiley, Calvin John, and David Fakunle. “From ‘Brute’ to ‘Thug:’ the Demonization and
Criminalization of Unarmed Black Male Victims in America.” From “Brute” to “Thug:” the
Demonization and Criminalization of Unarmed Black Male Victims in America, Jan. 2017,

1. This is an article going into details on how over the years the media, news, and movies
have painted black men as thugs. They have made us play a huge role in movies as the

thug making people afraid of being around black people. Also making people think that
we are thieves. They then go into giving multiple examples.
2. This will be very useful because not only did they do a lot of research but listed all their
sources at the end.
3. They have a ton of sources with a ton of details and plenty of places I can go to get even
more information. It is also on a very respected government website.
Butler, Paul. “US Justice Is Built to Humiliate and Oppress Black Men. It Starts with the
Chokehold...” The Guardian, Guardian News and Media, 11 Aug. 2017,
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/11/chokehold-police-black-men-paul-butler-race-
america. (Butler)
1. This is an article on how other people would feel if they were possibly treated half the
way black people are. The author talks about how his book chokehold can be used as a
way to really show how opression is affecting african americans. Which really can get
out of control. They even talk about how the criminal process can affect the way that
black people react to certain situations. Which then can affect how they act around the
people who are supposed to protect and sever but right now are doing the opposite.
2. This can be really effective when it come to explaining reasons why in certain situations
the government makes us scared of them and how their oppression affects the outcome
3. They seem to have enough info to actually make me want to learn more about what the
are talking about and how that can be used against me but also reasons for their
stereotypes.
Pasulka, Nicole. “Why It's Dangerous When Young Black Men Are Seen as Gangsters, Not
Grads.” TakePart, 11 Aug. 2014, www.takepart.com/article/2014/08/11/iftheygunnedmedown.
(Pasulka)
1. This is a website that just shows a few instances of how it can be dangerous for black
people to be seen as gangsters. As the problem tends to get worse and more young men
are killed the more their trying to draw awareness to the problem. It even allows you to
go to different post on multiple platforms to see what they are talking about. But, also
showing how scary it can be to get stopped by cops.
2. This can be useful be unfortunately i will not be using it.
3. They seem like a sort of rushed website that isn't really reliable because they didn't really
focus on their topic throughout the whole website.
Miller, Chris. “The Representation of the Black Male in Film.” Journal of African American
Men, vol. 3, no. 3, 1998, pp. 19–30. JSTOR, JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/41819338.
(Miller)
1. This journal is an article on how black men are seen in movies and how it can effect
black men. It tells how it can effect how the people watching the movies begin to think of
people when everytime they watch movies they play “gangsters” or “thugs”. Miller
himself says, “The way the motion picture industry portrays black people serves the

interest of the dominant white class by keeping blacks from positions of power in
American society
2. This will be really effective because i will really be able to show how the movie industry
effects black people too.
3. Chris clearly did his research and really made since he was able to convince me of how
they make us look bad as a race and how its used to make the dominant race happy.
