Reflection (Tornadoes formation and their

effects).

This is the fourth lesson of the Hend Alyammahi

Lesson Student
unit. the students need to learn

how tornadoes form and their
effects on the surrounding area.
MST Mr. Joseph Townsend School RAK Academy PYP

Class Grade 4B Date November 4, 2018

Overall aim and context of the lesson

The students must create their own village and then use the spinner as a stimulator to a tornado. Then
record the effects of tornadoes on humans, animal, crops etc. also, they will act out the steps of the
formation of tornadoes.

Select (S):
Identify a lesson and what standards are you addressing
Lesson: Can I identify how a tornado is created and its effects?
Strand/ sub-strand: Earth and Space (how we organize ourselves?): Tornadoes (Natural Disaster).
Describe (D):
Who is the lesson for? Grade 4B (mixed level class: 6 HA/ 5 LA/ 10 MA)
Where did the lesson take place? at the classroom.

What were you trying to achieve in your lesson?

Through the experiment and the drama activity, I hope the students were able to identify the steps of
a tornado creation. Moreover, they had to observe and record its effects on the surrounding
environment.

What did the students do?

The students had to act out the steps of a tornado formation after reading and analyzing the provided
labeled pictures. Then, they have been asked to create their own village using small models. Next, they
had to use the spinner as a tornado and observe its impacts on their village. Finally, they recorded
their observations and we discussed them as a class.
Analyze (A):
Why do you think the students responded the way that they did?
The provided pictures beside each step helped the students to build a better understanding of the
concept. That allowed the students to create nice and correct drama performance of the steps.
Furthermore, the mini experiment to illustrate a tornado and measures its effects were very engaging
and enable the students to clearly explain the effects.

How well did your teaching relate to the students’ prior understanding?
The students have learned about natural disasters from pervious lessons and many of them read about
tornadoes. Therefore, I started my lesson by asking them to write what they know about tornadoes
and played a video of a real tornado just in case someone doesn’t know what it is.

How well did you engage the students?

Providing real life video, picture for each step and interesting material for the experiment, engaged
the students and attracted their attention. Also, giving them the chance to come up with their own
performance was a good student-centered activity.
Appraise (A):

Explain the nature of the experience from the students’ perspective

All the students liked the drama activity and they worked very hard on their performance to compete
with other groups. Also, they liked the spinner experiment and found it works similarly to the
tornadoes.

Did your lesson meet your teaching goals?

My teaching goal from last lesson was to give clear instructions. Through the students’ performance
and with minimal need to repeat instruction. I think I provided clear and simple instructions.
Transform (T):
How might you enhance student learning of this lesson in the future?
In the future I would create a story about a tornado chaser who is trying to create a movie about
tornadoes. I will ask the students to help him by conducting a research for some facts about
tornadoes. Then we will carry on with the steps and the same experiment. However, I might have
extra material to reduce the number of the group members.

What are the implications for your professional practice?

I keep working on improving my instructional style, and to improve my questioning.
