1. Standards for Lesson

Content

a. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4​- Determine the meaning of words and phrases

as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings;

analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Content Practice: ​Identify and utilize examples of figurative language in a

review game of Kahoot.

b. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.2.D​ Use precise language and domain-specific

vocabulary to manage the complexity of the topic.

Content Practice: ​Students will create their own examples of figurative

language (the teacher will assign each student a type of figurative language at

random) in the shared Google Docs. Then there will be a class discussion to

analyze which type of figurative language was given.

2. Lesson Objectives

A. Students will be able to determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are

used in figurative meanings.

B. Students will be able to analyze the impact of specific word choices and tone.
C. Students will be able to use precise language and figurative language to manage

the complexity of the unit.

3. Introduce the Learning Activity

A. The lesson objectives for the day will be written on the board.

B. The teacher will review types of figurative language with a game of Kahoot.

4. Provide Information

A. When students walk into class, the teacher will ask students to log in to their computers.

B. When the students are settled in, the teacher will ask two students to read the objectives

on the board.

C. The teacher will assist students in logging on to the Kahoot game for the bell ringer.

a. Students will log onto their computers to being the lesson.

b. The teacher will do a brief review on types of figurative language with the class

by asking students to explain what each type of figurative language is.

c. The teacher will post the website homepage on the board and wait for everybody

to come to the website.

d. The teacher will post the unique class code for the students to log on to on the

board and written on the board so everybody can see the numbers.

e. The class will play the game of Kahoot. As the game progresses, the teacher will

explain why each answer is correct to each question and justify why the rest of the

answers were wrong.

f. When the game is over, the teacher instruct students to go to the shared Google

Doc on the class page on the teacher’s website

g. As students are logging on to the Padlet, the teacher will pass out index cards for

students to use for the next activity.

h. Each student will have a type of figurative language on the index card. The

student will create their own example of figurative language in the Padlet page

i. The students will complete this activity in until there are five minutes left.

j. The teacher will lead a class discussion on each type of figurative language and

the students will guess what each example represents.

k. CLOSURE: the teacher will instruct students to send in their exit slip on Google

Forums.

5. Provide Knowledge of Results

A. The Kahoot review game will act as a recoding material for students to review for their

figurative language quiz.

B. The Padlet activity will be shared with the teacher. The teacher will also note what type

of figurative language students were assigned to. The teacher will assess students’

knowledge of figurative language by their examples that they provide in the document.

6. Provide Practice

A. The Padlet activity will act as an informal assessment to see how students are able to

make their own examples of figurative language. This activity will also extinguish any

misconceptions that students may have before the quiz.


7. Methods of Assessment

A. The Kahoot review game will function as an informal formative assessment for students

to see what they should be focusing on or reviewing more to review for the quiz.

B. The Google Forum will act as a formal formative assessment to assess students’

knowledge of the material for the quiz that will precede the following day.

8. Review

A. The students will review their knowledge of the topic in the Google Forum.
