Fifth Semester , First Periodical Examination, August 2017

Time: 2 hours Maximum Marks: 50

1) For a capacitively coupled, common-emitter amplifier, the reduction in gain at low and high frequencies
are due to _____ and ____________ respectively. (Assume the coupling capacitors to be very large).
(a) Internal capacitances of the BJT ; Miller Effect (1 Mark)
(b) Coupling capacitors ; Internal capacitances of the BJT
(c) Miller effect ; internal capacitances of the BJT
(d) Coupling Capacitors ; Miller Effect
(e) None of these

2) Assuming the voltage sources and components to be ideal,

R2 I2 C

3) A filter has a transfer function given by T ( s ) =
1 + 10 −6 s

i) Identify the type of filter.

ii) Calculate the cut off frequency.
iii) What is the unity gain frequency?
iv) What is the magnitude of the transmission at 10 kHz ? (7 Marks)

4) A perfectly designed filter has a frequency response as given below, where the gain is given in V/V
and f = 106 Hz. (3 Marks)

5) An amplifier with a nominal gain 1000V/V exhibits a gain change of 10% as the operating temperature
changes from 25 ºC to 75ºC. If it is required to constrain the change to 0.1% by applying negative
feedback, what is the largest closed-loop gain possible? (5 Marks)

6) A newly constructed feedback amplifier undergoes a performance test with the following results: With the
feedback connection removed, a source signal of 5 mV is required to provide a 10-V output to the load;
with the feedback connected, a 10-V output requires a 200-mV source signal. For this amplifier, identify
values of A, β, Aβ, the closed-loop gain, and the amount of feedback (in dB). (5 Marks)

7) (i) Using an ideal opamp, design an inverting amplifier with a closed loop gain of -100 V/V and input
resistance of 1 kΩ. (4 Marks)
(ii) In the above design, if the op-amp is replaced with a non-ideal one with an open loop gain of
1000 V/V what is the new closed loop gain? (3 Marks)

8) The circuit given below uses an op amp that is ideal except for having a finite gain A. Measurements

x%) (6 Marks)

b. If the nominal closed-loop gain is -100 V/V and x = 1, what is the range of gain values expected from
such a circuit ?
