Focus: Melody

Week 1: Melody (High and Low) + Vocabulary

Week 2: Melody + Counter Melody = Harmony + Vocabulary
Week 3: Instrumentation Exploration + Vocabulary
Week 4: Recognizing a melody written out on staff paper + Vocabulary
Week 5: Encompassing weeks 1-4 and exhibited in lesson plan below

OBJECTIVE:

● Students will be able to perform melodic passages to exhibit high and low pitches
and musical expression.
● Students will be able to understand the basic principles of melody and counter
melody

How will I exhibit the importance of melody in music?

1. Play a portion of a lecture in which a college professor is teaching about measure

theory in a monotone voice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XhMgu_ekeY
2. Play a portion of a motivational video about Giovanni Ruffin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sLope9LA-8
3. Discuss the major differences of this video. Both videos teach valuable lessons
however, one is more engaging than the other. The fluctuation of pitch and
inflection is similar to taking a repeated note and rhythm and changing the notes
so that there is contrast and you do not know what comes next.

How will I exhibit the importance of counter melody in music?

1. Reflect back on the Giovanni Ruffin video and point out how there is background
music and noise that adds to the flow of the video

*Activity*
- Play high and low pitches on a xylophone and have students tell me whether the
pitch is either High, Low, or in the middle.

Pt. 2
‘My Ship Sailed From China’
http://www.singalong.org.uk/home/words/wordsm/myshipsailed

1. I will teach the song one phrase at a time using the call and response method
2. First we will go through the song on ‘do’
3. Next we will go through the whole song on the syllable ‘la’ which will still be
solfege ‘do’
4. I will incorporate the proper pitches
5. By utilizing voice we emphasize the teachings of Kodaly. By focusing on singing
students will gain physical awareness of pitch and melody as it relates to their
voices.

Introduction:

“Hello class. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your lives”

Vs

“Goooooodddddd Morning everyone! How are you today”

Exhibit monotone and expressive greeting to transition to the concept of melodic

embellishments and countermelody.

Conclusion:

We will conclude class by a few students sharing why melody and counter melody is
important and in what instances do two entities (things) work together in life to create
harmony.
Assessment:

To assess the students grasp of melody and counter melody students will be broken up
in pairs with the task of creating a melody in the key of C with a counter melody that
incorporates both high and low pitches to make the voices as independent as possible.

SOL:

3.2 The student will sing a varied repertoire of songs alone and with others, including

1. singing in tune with a clear tone quality;

2. singing melodies within the range of an octave;
3. singing melodies written on the treble staff;

3.7 The student will create music by

1. improvising rhythmic question-and-answer phrases;

2. improvising accompaniments, including ostinatos; and
3. composing pentatonic melodies, using traditional notation.
