Active learning in large classes: using polls everywhere to

increase students’ participation in class
The large numbers of students who attend lectures have been a challenge to most
of the lectures. The attention that the lecturer gets from the students has been very
low since there are very little contact between the lecturer and the students.

Deloitte (2014)

The contact between the lecturers the students in this case tends to be very low.
Using www.polleverywhere.com/use_cases/active_learning_in_large_classes the
lecture can engage the students in a lively discussion, which will help the lecture to
get the views from the students.

Most lecturers have realized that most of the students already have smartphones
are a bigger number also have laptops (Sellar, 2011). The wake of technology has
made everything possible making the lecturer not to worry about anything as
everything is possible through technology.

The students are only required to have a laptop or a phone, which will help them
sign into the account, by the lecturer. The process is simple; it includes creation of
an account by the lecturer, signing in by the students and the rest is sharing of

notes and questions. A student can also post a question to a fellow student and
engage in discussions. At the end of the lecture, the lecturer can give the final
verdict of the questions posted.

A student who does not have a phone might access the group using the class
computer. The readily available computers will help in accessing the notes and the
questions posted by the lecturer.

To begin this process, the lecture will chose which the poll that will be used. There
are a variety of poll choices.

How it happens
The lecture will create an account that is free to all students.

The lecturer can start out with a multiple choice poll and register his or her
students. This poll can be used as a roll call by the lecturer.

The students can also sign in as a group. The group will be managing their

When the lecturer posts a question in the class, the students can share amongst
themselves, that is student to student interactions or tackle the question as a group.
This will lead to a higher cooperation amongst the bigger number of the students.

The lecturer should allow students to give their views towards the topic. This is a
random selection that will make sure that all the students attend class so as to make

sure that no one misses a class. The marks will later be awarded on the basis of the
student’s cooperation during the class.

According to Johnson (2009) the random selection is the best way to make sure
that all the students participate fully during the lecture and will minimize the
chances of missing lectures. All the groups have a login account number which the
lecturer has and will not announce which group he sent the question. The group

will rather receive the question on sending at take some time t process the answer.

In the case the lecturer wants to involve all of the students, he will send the
questions to the general poll center where all of the students will be in a position to
get the question and learn what the question is talking about (Johnson, 2009). In
this case, the lecturer is not interested to know who attended the class and who did
not attend the lecturer.

The students can use cell phones which are allowed into the lecture also to post a
question to the lecturer who will in turn give a response to the students through the
account created. Everything can happen through the computer without a student at
the back of the class shouting out the answer (Kolb et al. 2011). Apart from
creating a silent learning environment, this system will also provide students who
find it difficult to communicate in class a chance to post and ask their questions.

pool of questions

A pool of questions can be created from the questions posted from the students.
This can help the lecturer to know the areas where most of the students have not
polished up. This helps the lecturer to know the area where to address. It is from
the pool of questions that the lecturer can come up with the questions for the final
exam.

Apart from posting the questions, this site can also be used for polls. A lecturer can
know what the preferences of the student are and the best way the lecturer can
lecture so that the students can understand best, asserts Sellar (2011).

The polls can be done even outside the class. The lecturer could post a motion
which the students can contribute their views even while outside the classroom.
Students can also participate in a constructive discussion with the lecturer even
during vacations.

Using the laptops and phones, the students can reach the lecturer wherever he is.
This method of discussion can also help the lecturer to reach the students even
when on a hospital bed.

During the exams period, the students can use most of the questions that have been
posted on the site to revise for the exams. According to the poll, most of the
students who actively participate in this exercise always attain higher marks in the

final exam.

The above data shows that this site has assisted most of the students when it comes
to class work. Those who do not participate in this exercise cannot get the attention
of the lecture and that case has earned an average mark of 18 percent. Those who
participated fully on the other hand, improved greatly to earn an average mark of
60 percent. This pie representation can give us a mere picture of how important
this exercise is and why students should take it as serious as possible.

In the case of a poll, the data from the pol can be collected by the lecturer to come
up with the solution. For example in the case the lecture wants to know how many
students have worked on their assignments.

The lecture could therefore be in a position to know the strides that the students are
making towards the completion of the assignment. In case most of the students
have not yet completed the assignment or most of the students are finding the
questions challenging, the lecture will come in to help. The students can also
request for help from other members of the class who have already completed the
assignment.
