APPENDIX A: REASONS RESPONDENTS WOULD VOTE FOR A SPECIFIED

CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE OF SLC MAYOR
If the election for the office Salt Lake City Mayor was held today and the candidates
were as follows, for whom would you vote? Why would you vote for [Jim Dabakis /
Jackie Biskupski / Stan Penfold / David Ibarra / Ross Romero]?

Jim Dabakis
 Anybody but Jackie and he seems reasonable.
 For a variety of reasons. I would vote for him or Stan. I would vote for him over Stan, and I would
vote for him because the Jacki Biskupski administration has been the worst administration for Salt
Lake City. I don’t like anyone else in the field. I find myself agreeing with Jim on a lot of issues.
 Good track record
 He actually listen and cares unlike everyone else who money grabs.
 He aligns the most closely with my type of thinking. He follows a lot of the same social causes that
I believe in.
 He can get things done and has shown the ability to compromise with democrats and republicans.
 He has a progressive agenda.
 He has a solid democratic record and he didn’t force all the homeless people out. I wouldn’t feel
comfortable voting for Jackie because of what she has done for the homeless shelter.
 He has a solid history of being an effective leader in the Senate.
 He has just done a lot in the community and he is very involved in everything and he is not afraid
to call things out when they are wrong.
 He has spoken at several events that I have attended and he is pro marijuana and pro LGBT rights.
 He has the most knowledge and he is very actionary. He cares about Utah, he cares about fiscal
corruption.
 He has the most trusted history of action on issues that I care about. He likes to fight and Salt Lake
needs a mayor who like to fight.
 He is a little more left than Biskupski but if he were out I would vote for Biskupski.
 He is always out there in the middle of everything trying to get stuff done.
 He is not afraid to be different and doesn’t only concentrate on agenda.
 He is someone I know and I don’t have a very unfavorable opinion of him.
 He is the one I’ve heard of.
 He is the only one I’ve really seen and he says stuff that I agree with.
 He is willing to work with Utah republicans, and he has more street cred than Jackie.
 He most aligns with my personal polices.
 He politically aligns with my own beliefs.
 He says what he thinks. I’ve never caught him in a lie and he’s not your average politician, he’s
more gentle and fair minded.
 He seems more progressive.
 He seems to be the only one that doesn’t have a lot of negativity floating around from what I’ve
seen or haven’t seen. I usually go by news stories and research about what they are doing to the
other candidates and stuff and pros and cons.
 He seems to hold a lot of the same ideals I do.
 He sounds good.

Lighthouse Research & Development, Inc. February 2018 A1

Salt Lake City Mayoral General Public Telephone Survey Report prepared for Sen. Jim Dabakis

 He was a former legislator, liberal and aggressively liberal, and I appreciate that.
 He’s a democrat.
 He’s been around.
 He’s been in office for a little while and he might do a better job.
 He’s engaged with the community.
 He’s got a personality I like, he’s been around awhile, he seems fun and outgoing, and he’s what
we need. He’ll run against Jackie and I favor him over her.
 He’s not Jack Biskupski and he’s the only other person I recognize.
 He’s the only one I recognize on the ticket.
 His choice and his convictions and I think he has a creative mind.
 His political views align with mine.
 I agree more with his views on certain things.
 I agree with him and I think he is very different from most politicians in Utah. He is active in the
community and he is accessible.
 I agree with his policies and I follow him on Facebook and his thoughts on issues align with mine.
 I am familiar with his platform, I really like him, and think he could do a good job. He is a part of
the LGBTQ community and that is important to me.
 I am not a super political person but from what I know he is Democrat and I have personally met
him and he was super kind.
 I believe he’s a democrat.
 I connect with some of his platform more than the others.
 I don’t know.
 I feel more consistently in alignment with his choices. I like the other candidates, but they aren’t
as consistent with their choices.
 I find him to be more favorable for his political history instead of Jacki Biskupski and her career.
 I follow his politics and it seems like he cares about Salt Lake.
 I hate him the least.
 I have more exposure to his positions and from people who appreciate him.
 I just like what I have seen so far from him in the state governments. I am Liberal and I think he
champions Liberal causes.
 I know a lot of what he has done and he is pretty liberal and has the same values as me. He has
been involved with Utah politics for a long time.
 I know him he best.
 I know him personally and like him.
 I know him the best and I think he is an effective communicator.
 I know him. I know several of them but he is an outspoken advocate for causes in Utah.
 I know him. I think he is great for Utah.
 I know Jim personally and I really like his politics and his stance against the current White House
administration and their environmental stance.
 I know the most about him.
 I like him more than Jackie Biskupski.
 I like his commitment to the city his politics and principles.
 I like his positions and he is taking good positions on some things.
 I like his record and he stands up for what he thinks is right.
 I like his senate record and the things he stands for. I think he gets too wrapped up in rhetoric
sometimes but I like him as a person.

Salt Lake City Mayoral General Public Telephone Survey Report prepared for Sen. Jim Dabakis

 I like his stance on LGBTQ efforts, as well as he is very liberal.

 I like his stance on public policies.
 I like that he is a creative thinker, he is friends with both democrats and republicans, and he made
all of his money from Russian art which is kind of cool.
 I like that he is someone who has many of the same views I have and he is really transparent. I
know exactly where he stands on things and he has a sense of humor. He takes the time to learn
about the issues before judging or voting on them.
 I like the fact that he’s a little bit of a conformist or a disrupter of the status quo.
 I like the policies that he has advocated for as a public official.
 I like the work he did so I have followed him a little more closely.
 I like what he has talked about and what he believes in. I like his character, he’s not boring, and
he’s a good guy.
 I like what he stands for and I think he is a hard working person.
 I like what he’s done so far in office.

 I spent a lot of time with him and saw his internship. He has a good sense of humor
 I support his policies more and the only two I know moderately well are him and Biskupski and I
worked with her and it wasn’t great.
 I think he has been a very good public servant. I like the fact that he defends personal rights. I
think he has been wonderful. I like his sense of humor.
 I think he has the city’s best interests at heart. I just like his policies and what he stands for.
 I think he is a funny guy. I like his qualities.
 I think he’s proven, he’s had to work enough in a majority run state house, and I think he has good
relationships. I don’t think he’s as scripted as Penfold, but I feel like he is more transparent.
 I think Jackie has had her turn and I like Jim.
 I think that he has the interest of a diverse population of the city in mind and he represents the
population without underrepresenting those who are non-supportive.
 I think that he more closely represents my beliefs, more than Jackie.
 I voted for Biskupski and was disappointed in her but I have more faith in Dabakis.
 I would vote for anyone but Jackie.
 I’d vote for anybody except Jackie. I know his name and agree with some of his stances.
 I’m most familiar with him but I don’t entirely disagree with his stances.
 I’m most familiar with him.
 I’m not familiar with the other names, but I have dissatisfaction with Jackie. He has a record of
supporting sensible transportation and Salt Lake City development.

 If I had to vote I would vote for him because I think I know the name.
 Jackie is the current mayor and I know that there has been some controversy but I don’t know
many details, and Jim and has been a state senator for a bit so if he were a candidate I would

 Out of all of them I like him the most. I do not like the way Jackie has been running things.
 Party affiliation

 I feel like she’s doing a good job.
 I have more name recognition with her and I am more aware of what she is doing.

it is important for city officials to have conversations with their city because that means they care
about their jobs.
 I heard people around me talk supportive about her.
 I just follow the stuff that she’s been doing in town and I like it.
 I just think she is good. I just seem to like Jackie. I think she fits in right. I think she is doing good.

extremely favorable in honoring my uncle and she had a huge ceremony for a relative who didn’t
come home from the war.
 I know her personally and I like her as a person. I don’t know about a ton of the politics but from
the small amount I have heard, it’s been good. I’d have to do more research to feel confident in

 I would vote for her because she is the only one I know. She also seems to be doing alright so far.
 I’m happy with what she has done as mayor.
 I’m kind of familiar with what she does and how’s she has been as a mayor already.
 I’m not really sure.
 I’m quite satisfied with her current positions and time. I’ve also had second hand accounts with
her being open to listen and respond. I think there should be more women in politics.
 I’ve been happy with her performance and she talked about issues that I am concerned about.
 I’ve been with a supporter of hers for a few years and I think she does a really good job.
 I’ve heard of her and read that she’s a democrat.
 It seems like she’s doing a lot and trying to do a lot of different things. I don’t really expect miracles
from anyone with one short term, but with two terms people could pull off a lot of things.
 It’s a name I recognize.
 It’s the only name I recognize.
 More in line with my values
 My values are in line with hers.
 Name recognition if nothing else. I would have to research the others more thoroughly.

things for the community. I also follow her on Instagram.
 She represents a different frame of mind.

 She’s currently the mayor and knows what to do in the office.
 She’s doing a good job.
 She’s doing some good things with streets and infrastructure and she deserves credit for that.
 She’s the only candidate I recognize and I haven’t heard anything from the others and I think she
is great.
 She’s the only one I know.
 She’s the only one that I know.
 She's a Democrat.
 That was the only name that I saw on the freeway.
 The things that I do know about her in local politics have been favorable in my opinion and on the
LGBTQ and the environmental issues.
 We haven’t had too many women and I think she’d do a good job.

Stan Penfold
 He has been a friend for thirty years.
 He has the most experience in Salt Lake City, at least from the council perspective. I also think he
would be an excellent CEO of the city.
 He is just a wonderful down to earth person and he can get a whole lot done with a lot of smiles
and gratitude and I just think the world of Stan.
 He is not Dabakis or Biskupski and his name I have seen driving around.
 He’s actually a friend and I think he would do a great job.
 I don’t know he is active in the community and he seems to care more about people than politics.
 I like the name Stan.
 I like the work they did with the council.
 I like what he has to say. It seems like he listens and wants to be a voice to the people and
community as opposed to ignoring them after elected.
 I think he has a good track record on the city council. I think he has experience and I trust mayors
that come from the legislature.
 I think I’ve seen something about him.
 I think Stan has had a decent amount of experience with the city council, but that’s hard to say
though. I would also be voting against Biskupski.

I like him all around. He’d do a great job.
 Out of what I know about all the candidates and especially what I don’t like about Jackie currently.

has done a good job for this city and I don’t know much about the other two.
 I like his immigration policy.

has had her try and she could’ve done better and it is time for change.
 I think he’s an ok candidate.
 I’m not really sure.
 It’s the name that sounded most familiar.
 Let’s try somebody new.
 Process of elimination

Ross Romero
 He is the one I am the most familiar with.
 He supports minorities in the cities and he would do a good job. He is a voice to a population that
doesn’t have one.
 He’s not Jim Dabakis or Jackie Biskupski.
 He’s the one I know the most about.
 I choose to not answer.
 I don’t care for any of the others. Jim Dabakis is nice but I don’t see him in that position. Stan is a
good guy but I also don’t see him being mayor. I like Jackie and wanted her to succeed but I think
she was unsuccessful. I like her values but I don’t like the way she does things.
 I favor him over others.
 I have a somewhat favorable opinion of him.
 I have been pleased with him.
 I have campaigned for him and know him personally and I think he is very responsible and
trustworthy.

 I work with him and we are longtime friends. He is the real deal.
 I’m not really sure.
