May, Might

May is used to express. May (potere) si usa per esprimere:

1. Probability, possibilità o probabilità,
2. give or request permission, dare o richiedere permesso

May May + infinitive without to

She may be late. Probability

Può darsi che lei arrivi in ritardo
Mary may join us at the restaurant.
Può darsi che Maria ci raggiunga al
ristorante.

Might Might + infinitive without to
It is generally the past and conditional of can. Generalmente è il passato e condizionale di can.

He might arrive late. Probability

Potrebbe arrivare tardi. to express a probability (more remote than
The weather might change for the better. may).
Il tempo potrebbe migliorare. Per esprimere una probabilità più remota di
may.

Might I have your attention, please? Request permission

Potrei avere la vostra attenzione? Very formal and rarely used.
Molto formale e usato raramente.

If you studied, you might pass the test. In 2nd and 3rd conditional sentences.
Se studiassi, potresti passare l’esame. Nelle ipotetiche di 2° e 3° tipo:
If you had studied, you might have passed
the test.
Se avessi studiato, avresti potuto passare
l’esame.

To be likely/unlikely
P.S. 1. it is used in a personal structure: Subject + be + likely/unlikely + infinitive
si usa in costruzione personale: Soggetto + verbo be + likely/unlikely + infinito
They are likely to arrive late because of the traffic jam.
Probabilmente arriveranno tardi a causa del traffico.

2. it is used also in impersonal structure: it + be likely/unlikely + that + ...

Usato anche in costruzione impersonale: it + be likely/unlikely + that + ...
It is likely that they will arrive late.
E’ probabile che arrivino tardi.

3. to express probability could and might may have a similar meaning in the affirmative form
but not in the negative one.
Per esprimere probabilità could e might possono avere un significato simile nella forma
affermativa ma non in quella negativa:
He could be late/ he might be late. Potrebbe arrivare tardi.
He couldn’t arrive. Non è potuto venire.
He might not arrive. Può darsi che non venga.
