Journal #3
This week I took control of the groups I have been working with. My teacher has
a box with folders for each group in the classroom. When I get to school in the morning,
I have 15 minutes to prepare for my four lessons for the day. She has all of the lesson
plans including worksheets in each folder so I just look over them to make sure I know
what the lesson is about. This was a little intimidating on Tuesday because up until this
week we had been co-teaching the lessons. Now I am on my own and she isn’t there for
backup. However, it has forced me to get out of my comfort zone and to establish my
role as their teacher for the rest of the semester on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.
I worked really hard this week especially since I am taking the lead of the small
groups. I am doing all hands-on activities now instead of observing so there is not any
room to slack. I also have been arriving early so I have more time to prepare for my
lessons instead of just getting there right when school starts. This week has made me
feel more like a teacher because I am the one teaching the lessons.
IEP for one of my students. The process was a little different though because the
parents didn’t come to the meeting. Instead, the special education teacher called the
mom and a translator because the mom’s primary language is Spanish. It was cool to
see how much the teachers wanted the parents to be involved in this IEP even though it
can sometimes be easier for the parents not to be involved. Because this was my first
IEP meeting that I ever was apart of, it will be memorable for me. After talking in depth
about IEPs last week, I felt that this meeting was easier to understand. It put a blank
IEP into practice and it allowed me to see how some sections are to be filled out.
