The observation starts with a little conversation between researcher and teacher. I, as a
researcher have introduced myself. The teacher asked me “How many classes will be
enough?”, the answer “ only one “ then teacher decided to do not explain to students the
process. He thinks would be better that I sit in the end of the class and just observed. The
Teacher believes that if students know about research this could change their usual
behavior. I as a researcher accepted teacher’s decision respectably. On the end of the
conversation teacher ask me to follow him and wait outside the class. On the hall while
waited I could hear the teacher giving some welcomes. Teacher start the class ask to
students if everyone were feeling good. After the answer teacher told to students( at this
moment teacher speak in Portuguese). “Today we will receive one teacher’s friend.
Everyone please comes to front of the class.” The class was organized in lines. The teacher
opened the door ask me to into the class and said; “this man is my friend and he is going to
sit in the back of the class and no one can talk to him.”
I sat behind the students. They couldn’t stop looking​ at me all the time, teacher claimed​ for
attention and started​ again. At this moment the teacher starts a review of the last homework.
He asks students to open their books to correct the homework.
He wrote on the whiteboard the page of the homework and asked about the answer. I could
observe that the teacher waited for the student’s answers. After corrections he begins a new
theme.
As materials teacher used book and whiteboard. On the homework students will use an CD
that comes with book. The students were respectful and friendly in their behave with each
other. Teacher waited most of students finish the activity before moving to a new one.
Teacher makes students work in pairs.
Teacher speaks in English a half time, if students do not understand he repeat two times on
two manners. When students still can’t understand, the teacher speaks in Portuguese.
Teacher explains grammar rules on explicit way; New vocabulary is writen on the whiteboard
with a different color.
I could observe teacher follow the book’s sequences, first a text followed by vocabulary and
finishing with grammar rules. In the end of the class teacher write the homework on the
whiteboard and make a link with next class. When play times bell’s ring, students start to run
and the class finish.
The teacher is very organized and he has a good relationship with students, he try to use
English most of the time. Teacher could use more technology but in public school reality this
is difficult.
In my opinion the teacher has a hard work and he do the best he can. This observation
make me think about: How Can I do better?
