EQ: Is private school worth the tuition for our future and education?

Three Points to Prove: #1: Kids in private school achieve higher learning
#2:
#3:
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Point that this Source/Information Proves: #1: Kids in private school achieve higher learning

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Coleman, Kilgore, and Hoffer (1981) found that, “In a population of students from similar backgrounds, private school
students exhibit higher achievement and attainment.”

Coleman found that, “For many students, Catholic secondary schooling raises graduation rates”

“Private education increased the math scores of program participants,” Rouse found.

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This supports my point to prove because my point to prove states that kids in private school achieve higher
learning which this states that they do. They found that kids in similar backgrounds which is a controlled variable making
the results more reliable, exhibit higher achievement. This proves that because if kids from the same place end up having
higher learning from private schooling then they must be getting some extra edge then the public school kids. If they were
from different backgrounds than I could see it being less trustworthy but because they were from similar backgrounds
then it keeps it fair and they were getting the same thing just in different places.
Then there is the fact that there are increases in graduation rates which could also be directly related to the type of
education. Giving kids the motivation to finish school and graduate, which is important because the last year of high
school you learn a lot as well so you won't be getting your full education. Then there is the fact that kids in private
schooling do better in math which means that they must be doing something different and more advanced there. So it
proves that in at least one aspect of learning private schooling is beneficial.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: #2 Why parents choose private schools

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Michael Mote states that, “As the perception of public school “slippage” has grown, the demand for “private-school-type”
education has also grown.”

Michael Mote thinks that, “More and more parents seem to think that the answer to public schools is private school.”

Michael Mote also wrote that, “Public schools can never hope to become like private schools.”

The article also states that, “private schools strive to resemble their private school counterparts.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This source supports the Point to Prove because it says that parents literally choose private schools over public
schools. This source also provides evidence for it and backs it up. First by saying that Public schools are slipping or
becoming worse and worse in terms of money and environment. It goes on to say that there is not a safe environment for
all the children at public schools. This is because there are children there who don't have the programs that are provided at
private schools for the mentally disabled children.
Thus causing the public school system to fail more and more. When parents put their kids into public school care
they expect them to be taken care of by the tax dollars and money funded by the state. Then mentally disabled kids or
even regular kids who need the extra help need to get the extra tax money put into them. When this happens the school
loses more and more money. The parents notice this because the facilities and programs are not provided because there
isn't enough money. So to prevent this parents send their kids to private schools so that they could get the education and
programs they need or think they “deserve.” Also so that they don't have to run the risk of their children to encounter these
“mentally disabled” kids. Why not just prevent it all
This also proves it because it states the public schools are trying more and more to be like private schools. So why
not skip the middleman and wait for the change rather then just go straight to what is going to be. Like how public schools
are trying to change into uniforms and make their curriculums like private schools. Why not just go straight to the real
thing where they already have the programs, the uniforms, and order. So in this parents do like private schools more
because they provide just that token image of what a good learning environment and overall facilitation should look like.

________________________________________________________________________________________________
Point that this Source/Information Proves: #3 The benefits private schooling provide

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

The Council for American Private Education found that private school kids in “Grades 4,8 and 12 score well above the
average in reading, math, science and writing.”

The Council or CAPE for short also found that private school kids are provided with “A safe environment, high parent
and teacher satisfaction levels, a focus on civics, community service and a values-based setting.”

Rachel Irwin, occupational therapist and mom of two who lives in the Bronx in New York City says, “Not only the
academics but the behavioral expectations and social teachings enforced in the school are part of the draw.”

Ellen Greene who lives in Washington D.C sends her child to a private school where her son is provided with “Extra
programs including dance, music, art, Spanish, track and field, swimming, and chess.”

Jillian George a stay at-home mom of two in Toronto said, “My son’s public school teacher told me that if we
could afford it, my son would do better in a smaller class size where he could get more attention.”(Her son has
aspergers)

In a study meant to prove that private schools aren't actually better Academically found that “Kids who attend
private school had higher SAT scores.”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
This supports the point to prove because first of all it has evidence to show that kids are being benefited in their
academic education and being provided with the extra education and edge that they need. ALso it has a safe environment
that can help kids bloom and grow because you need the right environment and setting in order to flourish. Which is why
it is important to look for that but not only that but they provide the the time for parent teacher meetings and they focus on
helping kids to grow morally not only educationally.
Also at private schools they are offering more programs where kids of different interests can go and become more
advanced in this one thing that they are into and want to be a part of rather than having to join a club they aren't passionate
about. They may have chess club or some other community service clubs that aren't required but provided for the kids
who are interested in that specific thing.
Then there are also the benefits for the special learning kids or the disabled kids. At a private school they can be
provided with the care and support that they need. Rather than at public schools where they don't have the time to put into
these kids with disabilities. So at a private school they will be provided with the extra one on one time that they need to
understand and comprehend everything going on around them.
Then even more so this proves my point because in this article there was a test described that was run in order to
prove that public school education was on the equivalent onto private school learning. But in this study even trying to
prove that point they found that public schools to benefit kids because their SAT scores were higher than the other public
school students. They found that their test scores go up for private school kids and that private schools benefit their test
taking skills which ultimately will help them get into college.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: #2 Why parents send their kids to private schools

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“That was before I became a parent,” says Janet murray who before having a child despised private schooling.

Diane Abbott said “She was a mother first and a politician second.”

“I know first-hand how powerful education can be to individuals as a vehicle for social mobility,” claims Janet
murray a writer for The Guardian.

Janet murray wrote that “The state sector is full of parents buying advantage,” Including a “person who moves
house to get into a catchment area, pay private tutors, or consultants.”

She also wrote that “The fact is that for every parent who plays the system to get their child into a top system, a
child from a less advantaged background is likely to lose out.”

Janet Murray closed this article by writing that “Until local schools meet families needs and cater for each
individual child, can you blame people for putting their hand in their pocket?”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
This supports it because first of all she has a look into both sides because before having a child she did not ever
think that she would have a child in the private school system because she disliked it. Then after becoming a parent all of
a sudden her opinion changed and her attitude about it changed. Almost as if her world flipped which is what people say
when they have children. As a parent all you want is for your kid to succeed and have all that they can have. Just as
Abbott said about politician second, when you have a kid no matter your beliefs whatever you can do to benefit them you
will do, they will always come first which is why many parents choose private schooling.
Janet said in the article that public school parents give her mean looks or think that they are higher than her
because they go public and took the high road. When in actuality they could have moved into a good school district or pay
for a private tutor. Those are both putting money down to benefit their kids which means they are cheating the system as
well. So in this sense it would be as if their kids were in private school or at least paying the tuition of it to get their higher
learning and benefits. So it's not like they aren't doing everything they can either they just see it in a different way then
private school parents do when in actuality it is basically doing the same thing. So even if private schools were abolished
they would find a way to make these elite learning schools stay that way and then the rich would just be on the top and we
would be in the same position as before.
In the article there was a lot of mention about how the smaller class size and more time put into an individual is
what benefits the child to help him or her grow. Which is the one thing that parents were looking for especially in schools.
So until the public schools could start just focusing on that extra focus and time spent onto one child to meet their needs
rather than in the facilities there would never be improvements. That no one could blame parents for sending their kids to
private schools trying to offer whatever little edge they can give to their children.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“He's a good person. He wanted me before I was smart.” says Mary.

“I think your niece may be gifted.” says Bonnie.

“You are denying the girl her potential. How many seven year olds are doing advanced calculus?” says Evelyn Mary’s
Grandmother.
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

In the film that I watched it portrayed a girl that was advanced in math and was so smart she knew more than the
teacher teaching at her public school. It might have exaggerated it a bit but for the most part it was true in showcasing that
there are kids out there way beyond advanced in smarts and they are known as genius’s. So when the public school
realized that they were not able to hold such a smart young girl they had to transfer her.
Even though the uncle didn't want there going to private school for several reasons. First one being that it has
conformities that you must follow. You have to be an upstanding community member and they push you hard and far
which is the reason as to why this girl's mother killed herself because her mom hired private tutors and private schools and
all of this. It holds many benefits because the student can learn and accomplish many different things but a lot of the
ideals that you must follow is strict and will test you mentally. In many ways it helps and benefits but it could push you a
little over the edge to the point where you want to act out.
So this little girl went to a private school and had many tutors and it benefited her and it showed because she
blossomed and was about to solve one of the biggest mathematical problems known to man. Her mom completed it but
she acted out and didn't show it to anyone because her mom pushed her so hard into being this genius when you go to all
these tutors and everything you lose you freedom and are always working hard with no fun. So it does help because
obviously the public schools weren't enough for her but the private school conformities could break your spirit down.

Why parents choose private schools
Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
There is a fight between carolyn and Jack as to where their boy William will go to school and the mom refuses
to give in to Jack

She wants William to go to a very specific school because she knows how smart he is and keeps fighting for it
because she wants him to advance in life

The boy William is extremely smart and needs a proper environment to cultivate his talents

Carolyn coming from a background and wealth where she knows what it takes to make it in the world is
pushing for her son to get into a good school and won’t stop no matter what

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This source supports the point to prove because of the fact that Williams mom or parent is choosing private
schooling over any other schooling. But not only private schooling but also the elite of the elite schooling. This proves
already by itself that parents would prefer private schooling.
Also it proves it because she is wealthy and powerful but only because she herself went through high
education to get where she is now. She pushed and fought for it so she understands what it takes. She wants her
son to go to the best schools to give him the extra edge that he may need in the real world. She knows how
smart and driven her son already is so she knows the only way that he can learn anything is to go into a school
of higher education.
Her as a parent refusing to let her son go to any other schools except for the top schools so that he can get the
opportunities that he needs proves by itself that parents choose private schooling or higher levels of education over
anything else.

The benefits of private schooling
Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
“The most obvious discrepancy between public and private schools comes down to cold hard cash.”

“By law, public schools must accept all children.”

“Teachers in private schools often have subject-area expertise and an undergraduate degree in the subject they
teach.”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

It provides support because of the fact that it says that public schools first off don’t have the cash to run their
facilities properly and smoothly. They run off of the cash and money that the government provides, which has limits and
they need to spend that money on specific and certain things. Where as private schools generate their own money and
have no limit to how much money they can have. They get money through each individual student and also from
donations of alumni and such. Which means that they have a heavier cash flow. This really helps because they can buy or
pay for the upgrades to not only their staff or lunch but also to other facilities like the water fountains and bathrooms.
Another reason is that public schools are required to teach every student that is provided into their district. This
means that there is a heavy heavy burden onto all the smart kids that if they were put in the right environment could excel,
but instead they are stuck at public school where some of the excepties are bad influences and could cause these smarter
kids trouble. SO with a more selected group of kids like in private schools there's a more specific group of kids in that
school so that they can better advance their careers and education.
Then of course there are the teachers, the teachers are the one teaching your children so of course they are one of
the most important parts of the education of kids. In private schools it is normal for teachers to have degrees in their
specific field of teaching, this is important because if they specialize in this one place then they can teach better for this
specific class. Whereas public school teachers generally just have the bare minimum of what is required to teach students.

Benefits that private schooling provides
Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
“Private school class sizes are often smaller than your average government school classes.”

“Private schools can often have more flexibility with curriculum and subject choices than government schools.”

“Private school’s affiliation can mean a stronger focus on core values.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
When class size decreases like in most private school the amount of one on one time with the students increases
and the amount of learning that these individuals get is substantially more. PRivate schools normally have smaller class
sizes than public schools which means that there will be more learning going on for the kids at private schools whereas in
public schools they can’t get the one on one help they need.
Private schools also provide other things that public schools can’t provide. Such as for one religion classes, for
certain schools there are different religion classes or courses that are offered to be taken. Not only that but there are also
other classes specified and offered to students such as specific sciences like stem. SO students are offered more activities
or classes that they can take rather than just taking the core classes that they are required to take. Or even if your child is
special needs then private schools can offer a more controlled environment of learning for this specific special needs and
can receive the attention that they deserve and need.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational
experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, the International Baccalaureate
programme (and the IB diploma program), and gifted programs, just to name a few.”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

All of these things drive students to perform better and just help them overall in their future. Private school
students often score top marks on standardized tests and college exams says Myriam choma. She is saying that they are
able to get these high scores because of the fact that they are going to private schools and are offered these benefits and
these opportunities.
This article also goes on to say that in private schools there is more parent involvement. This is another important
key in education because if parents simply don’t care or just don;t get involved in the students life and homework then
they won’t have that extra push. When parents are involved they will know what is going on and will make them want to
check in on your grades and homework more often. therefore forcing you and pushing you to strive for excellence and
complete all of your work.
Also that private schools are a safe environment and a place for safe learning. They accept only students that they
wish to accept therefore making the campus a safer place for everyone there. This is important because not only does the
education have to be good but the student has to feel both welcomed and safe. In private schools they can offer this for the
student because it is more of a closed gate community because private schools can accept who they want and reject who
they don;t want.
