The idea for Our City our Stories has developed out of the Heritage project we did with Churches Trust
last year. We looked at cultural heritage and the early history of Ireland & Northern Ireland.
Our central character was Saint Columba so we titled the project ‘Searching for Columba’.
This year we are bringing our history up to date with reference to our more recent past and the
relevance of historical events and people to young people.

We got involved with the City Council bid for Derry / Londonderry as

‘Young Persons CAPITAL – 2019’ - http://www.derrystrabane.com/youth19

The Council will be investing £500,000 in young people during Youth19. In addition, Council are
working with partners to access a range of additional funding streams such as PEACE IV and Big
Lottery to support young people in the council area.

Derry City and Strabane District Council and its partners gave a commitment to pursue a dedicated
Youth19. Youth19 is a year dedicated to young people aged 12-24. Derry City and Strabane District
Council (DCSDC) will work with young people and partners to:
● Promote the voices, needs, priorities and rights of young people;
● Highlight the positive contributions young people make to our community;
● Supporting young people to take a leading role and Make.Change.Happen.

We have decided to develop a series of short films around the topic of ‘Our City Our Stories’
We hosted a full day of workshops and presentations around the idea of making Derry a place young
people want to come to and live and work in on 12th November 2018. We discussed our own thoughts
about the city.
Below is a link to the City Council research findings about how Young people feel about their city.

My class developed a Mind map of ideas for a Series of Stories to link up with the City Council
Partnership. I am part of a Group working on ‘Local Heroines’. We came up with a series of key
figures who have played a role in shaping the story of the city. Heroines from the past, present and
future.

I will be using Bernadette Mc Devlin – Mc Alisky as my Profile Story woman for Derry Heroines.
I will be researching under the following four headings.

The first Section explores the famous Bernadette Devlin mural and the important role of women
during the Civil Rights era.

The Second Section explores Bernadette the Community Activist

The Third Section explores Bernadette and the important role and place of women and ‘women
only spaces’

The Final Section explores Bernadette as an important role model of women for the 21century
and a distinctive voice in ‘Our City Our Stories.

1. Research Findings
I will conduct a survey to find out how many young people know about Bernadette Devlin and
what they think of her? (Weeks 1-2)
2. I will be using mostly archive footage with freedom to reproduce for educational / project
purposes (weeks 3-4)
3. Audiences – I am making my piece for our client ‘Churches Trust’ as part of a Diversity
Programme and for my BTEC National Diploma Qualification.
4. Client Background ( see my weebly website )
5. LINKS to Our City Our Stories - 10 week programme with Churches Trust.

The Mural of the Story is a series of short films in which two of the Bogside Artists tell the stories
that inspired their iconic artwork in Derry/Londonderry's Bogside. The first film explores the
famous Bernadette Devlin mural and the important role of women during the Civil Rights
era.
