Application

John Swales’s first defining characteristic of a discourse community is that there is a broadly

agreed set of common public goals is instituted in the class of statistics for behavioral science

that the classroom’s peers struggle to employ statistical findings from their conducted research in

order to formulate a thesis on a predetermined population of people. 1. An example of these

goals promoted in the classroom would be to learn how to conduct research then present the

findings. 2. This is a common public goal in the discourse community because if the research

were to be incorrectly performed at any point that would result in the thesis being misleading

when presented to the rest of the peers. 3. It is of great importance to present the data and thesis

correctly, so that the discourse community can assert confidently a newly found piece of

information to present to the population that had been researched on. 4.
