CHAPTER 1
PRELIMINARY

English is a foreign language to most people of Indonesia, even for people


in remote rural areas in Indonesia, the English language is very strange and very
difficult to understand, it is necessary to the proper ways to learn. But in the era of
gloalisasi like this, English is easy to learn through education, as well as self-
taught. But in reality there are a lot of vocabulary and grammar are less apt to be
implemented for beginners who are learning to speak English as well as for
students in Indonesia. Thus the test is very appropriate to measure the ability of
the beginners and students learning the English language,
In essence the test is divided into many variations. However, in this paper,
the authors will discuss the tests grammar and vocabulary tests. Although tests
grammar and vocabulary tests are not very important in talking with the English
language, because although grammar or vocabulary less appropriate to talk with
other people, but if the person speaking is meant by that is being discussed, then it
sah- okay. But it is the opposite when the person is written using the English
language, because aspects of grammar and vocabulary is very important in a
writing, if one little it will lead to confusion on a matter.
In this article the author wrote a paper on Grammar (Grammar) and
Vocabulary (Vocabulary) and means of assessment. From grammar test author
describes three techniques used, namely Paraphrase, Completion and Modified
Cloze. Later in the vocabulary elaborated on the three techniques used, namely
Synonym, Definition and Multiple Choices.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. Grammar Test
Grammar test is a test used to measure the ability of students pertaining
inflection and syntax.
a) The techniques used in the tests Grammar namely:
 Mechanical Paraphrase
Paraphrase technique requires students to write a sentence that is
equivalent to the meaning given.
1. Test the passive form with the past continuous form
Original Text : I was watching TV and my brother was reading a
book.

Paraphrasing Text: I was watching TV and the book was being read
by my brother.
2. Test forms of the present perfect with for
Original Text : It is three times I did not go to college
Text paraphrasing: I have not go to college for three times

 Mechanical Completion
This test aims to train students in a matter of filling gaps. or "fill in
the blank" and of course taking into account the good grammar and
correct.
Example:

Anna: (1) I hear that you loose your wallet yesterday, is it true? (I heard you
lost your wallet yesterday?)

Jasmine: Yes anna, I am so sad (yes, anaa. I was very sad)

Anna: (2) And then How it happend? (How did that happen?)

Jasmine: I went home and I drove a bus, in that time, I sat near a man, I did
not know who was he. He read a newspaper (I go home and take the bus, I
sat near a man, I do not know who he was. He was reading a newspaper)
Anna: (3) Yes, and then? (Yes, then?)

Jasmine: I did not know he stole my wallet, I Tirrenus it when I would to pay
that bus (I did not know he stole my wallet, I realized it when I was going to
pay his bus)

Anna: (4) And then what do you do? (Then what do you do?)

Jasmine: I borrowed the money to someone next to me and he was so kind (I


borrowed money at A suitable man beside me and he is very good)

Anna: (5) The man left to you? or the man right to you? (Male Yag located on
the left you?)

Jasmine : The man right to me because the left is a stoler (bukan, laki-laki yag
disebelah kanan ku, yang disebelah kiri ku adalah seorang pencuri)

Anna : (6) I am sorry to hear that (aku sangat kasihan mendengarnya)

Jasmine : Thanks Anna, I hope it will never I to you (terimakasih anna, aku
harap itu tidak akan pernah terjadi padamu)

 Teknik Modified Cloze


Sebuah tes dimana siswa diminta untuk mengisi kata-kata yang telah
dihapus dari sebuah kalimat untuk mengukur kemampuan siswa dalam
memahami teks. Tes “Modified Cloze” memiliki macam-macam
diantaranya adalah :

1. Testing prepositions of place


Tes ini adalah tes yang mengharuskan siswa untuk mengerjakan
soal-soal yang jawabannya berupa preposisi
Selena looked at her room. Teddy bear was still……. The
closet. And the mirror was…… the closet too. The bin was…… the
desk. She looked at the plant, it…… the door. She wondered what
was…... the closet ……. The mirror and Teddy bear.

2. Testing articles
Testing articles adalah tes soal rumpang yang berisikan soal-soal
yang jawabannya bersumber pada materi artikel.
Contoh:

My mother goes to…. Supermarket near my house. She buys….


Vegetables for making…. Delicious food. She adds…... apple on it.
And then she arrives in…. house and preparing…. All materials.

3. Testing a variety of grammatical structure.


Testing a variety of grammatical structure adalah tes soal rumpang
berupa aragraph yang berisikan kata-kata yang hilang dan jawaban
berdasarkan pada variasi tata bahasa
Contoh:

After the class was over, I.......the school quickly. My watch showed
2:30 PM as I got on my bicycle. I pedalled hard and was soon
speeding home. My thoughts returned to the math..........that I had
just had in class. I could remember.........how I read the formula
again last night. I was glad that I had studied hard for that test.

4. Testing sentence linking


Testing sentence linking adalah adalah tes soal rumpang berupa 2
kalimat yang dihubungkan dengan satu kata.
Contoh:

A teacher gives an assignment to students to read a short story.


…………..., they should prepare a short story text.

b) Produksi
 Paraphrase
1. I was watching TV and the book was being read by my brother.
............. – 1 point (diberi 1 poin karena siswa hanya memberi
jawaban berbentuk frasa)
2. I have not go to college for three times
I have not – 1 point
Go to college – 1 point
For three times – 1 point

 Completion
Untuk setiap jawaban yang benar (1-6) diberi nilai 1

 Modified Cloze
Dalam pemberian nilai teknik Modified Cloze, guru memiliki
beberapa kunci jawaban yang diberikan kepada siswa. Jika
jawaban siswa benar, maka guru akan memberikan nilai 1.
Sebaliknya jika jawaban siswa salah, maka seorang guru tidak
akan memberikan nilai sedikitpun.

B. Tes Kosakata
Tes kosakata adalah tes yang digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan dan
produksi kata yang digunakan di dalam pengucapan atau penulisan.Dalam
memberikan penilaian tes tata bahasa, hindari pengurangan angka penilaian
terhadap kesalahan non-grammatical. Kosakata sangatlah penting untuk
pengembangan keterampilan bahasa (linguistic). Kosakata dan tata bahasa
adalah hal yang selalu berkaitan.

a) Teknik – teknik yang bisa di gunakan dalam tes kosakata :


1. Sinonim
Sinonim digunakan untuk mengetahui arti makna kata terdekat terkait
dengan kata yang bersangkutan.
contoh :
Choose the alternative (A,B,C,D) which is closest in meaning to the
underline word.
1) I love Manchester United, It is a great team.
A. Like B. Hate C. Chose D. Angry
2) Banjarnegara is a big city for living.
A. Pretty B. Large C. Small D. Wide
3) Valentino Rossi is a Moto GP rider who has many abilities.
A. Talents B. Skills C. Characters D. fans
2. Pilihan ganda
Pilihan ganda adalah tes yang diberikan kepada siswa untuk mengganti
sebuah kata yang salah dengan pilihan-pilihan kata lainnya yang sudah ada
dalam jawaban.
Contoh:
Choose the alternative (A,B,C,D) with give crossing ( x ).
They drove to work in their new .
a. house b. car c. office d. Street

Yang perlu digaris bawahi dalam membuat pilihan-pilihan lainnya :


1) Pilihan pengacau harus sesuai dengan kelas kata dari jawaban yang
benar.
For bad example :
She had to help the old man up the stairs.

2) Jangan memberi petunjuk jawaban.
For bad example :
She needs to get up earlier so she is buying an clock.

3) Pilihan pengacau harus memiliki tingkat kesulitan yang sama dari
jawaban.

3. Definition
Definition digunakan untuk menjelaskan makna dari sebuah subjek
berdasarkan penjelasan yang telah dicantumkan pada soal.
Contoh :
1) A person that rides, especially aperson who rides a bicycle, or
motorcycle. (rider)
2) A is a tool to write on whiteboard (boardmarker)
3) A is a thing that used if we ride a bicycle or motorcycle.
(helmet).

Dalam tes kosakata, kita membutuhkan cara untuk mengetahui kemampuan
siswa tentang kosakata dengan cara yang berhubungan dengan tes kecakapan
sebagai berikut :

KESIMPULAN
Tes adalah suatu pertanyaan atau tugas yang terencana untuk memperoleh
informasi tentang objek atau sasaran tes yang setiap butir pertanyaan atau tugas
tersebut mempunyai jawaban atau ketentuan yang dianggap benar. Jadi, Tes tata
bahasa adalah suatu alat atau prosedur yang digunakan dalam melakukan
penilaian dan evaluasi pada umumnya terhadap kemampuan struktur bahasa yang
digunakan oleh siswa.Tes kosakata adalah tes yang dimaksudkan mengukur
kompetensi peserta didik terhadap kosakata dalam bahasa tertentu baik yang
bersifat reseptif maupun produktif.
