RHETORICAL ANALYSIS 3

Rhetorical analysis:

Chicanos in higher education: status and issues

According to Downs rhetoric has to do with persuasion as an interaction and also the

study of this (pg. 448). The authors of this book claim that Chicanos encounter many issues

when going into higher education. This is important because of the big number of people from

Hispanic background in the U.S. The book is going to convince their audience by using a

rhetorical analysis of the subject that Chicanos go through issues and obstacles when going into

higher education.

According to Professor Vierra and Clark Hulse genre is something that we use to classify

something into a category and this can be seen everywhere like film, literature and music. Genre

is one of the most important things on a text because it is what helps you recognize what type of

book you are reading or what kind of movie you are watching, and this can be identified in a lot

of ways for example on the description of something or what the author is talking about or the

setting and what happens in the development of a story, movie or readings. Genres are

everywhere.

Discussion

Audience

“Chicanos in higher education: status and issues” this monograph has 3 authors, these

authors specialize in different fields and have a different targeted audience, therefore this

monograph is using an interdisciplinary approach. The audience that this authors are trying to

reach are people that specialize in Chicano studies, history, Spanish, education and sociology,

this is a monograph that can help understand the different obstacles that a Chicano goes through

when pursuing a career and higher education, this monograph can also be useful for Chicanos

that are going through this issues which make this monograph meant for even a broader amount

of people.

Ethos

The three authors of this monograph are educated in topics that relate to the topic of the

monograph and that make them reliable in this subject. Ronald W. Lopez has a Master of Arts in

U.S history from UCLA and worked as a research consultant in education and mass media and

also was the director of Chicano studies, Arturo Madrid-Barela has a Ph.D. in Spanish from

UCLA and was the director of the ford foundation graduate fellowships program for Mexican

Americans, native Americans and Puerto Ricans from 1975-1976 and Reynaldo Flores Macias

has a B.A in sociology and his M.A in education both from UCLA he was also the co-editor of

Aztlan-international journal of Chicano studies research. The fact that these authors have

knowledge about the different subjects that are discussed in this book makes the information

more accurate and trustworthy.

Pathos

This book includes pathos because it has a variety of images that make you connect even

more with the book and even with the authors, this book discusses the issues that Chicanos

encounter when going into pursuing a career in higher education and by seeing this images it

makes people of a Hispanic background feel the book more relatable and also understand more

deeply the points that the authors are trying to make, including this images and emotion in a text

like this and with this topic specifically is very deep and sometimes complicated because there

are a lot of people in the united states that come from a Hispanic background but the way that the

authors organize this makes a lot of sense and it gets the reader right away.

Logos

The authors also include logos in their monograph by adding many graphs and statistics

because as the reader is reading and looking through the book and seeing all the information that

the author provides and also providing evidence at the same time by adding this graphs, it makes

the information more detailed and accurate.

Conclusion

The book does use rhetoric to convince the audience about the issues that Chicanos go

through, this was very important because as students and as a community we have to understand

this issues and support, the authors of this book did talk about the issues and status of Chicano

students. According to Downs rhetoric uses persuasion and that’s what the authors used to talk

about this subject.
