LESSON PLAN for Problem Solving Activity

Grade
7th Title: Changing Global Environment
Level:
Author: Liam Cleary

Enduring The students will be able to understand the population change of

Understanding: world due to the history of populations becoming diverse changing
swing of demographics through both Male and Female, and how that
can affect the population of the nation and its size. The students will
work with understanding where certain Male and Female population
size originated and where the populations have changed and flowed
overtime and how that has affected its population.

Overview: This lesson will occur near the end of the year for the 7th grade
social studies class, at this point students will have a good
understanding of geography and the location of nations across the
globe, as well as some historical background in the growth of
ethnicities and cultures across the globe and their origins. During
the lesson students will be giving the opportunity to answer a
driving/challenging question: How have the origins of Males
and Females have changed in global populations?
Students during the lesson will be giving information containing
the population size during the early origins of certain nations:
China, Egypt, Great Britain, Spain, and Italy of both male and
female. Students will then review the current data of the
population size population of both male and female. Students will
then analyze the data and integrate it into a spreadsheet on google
sites, with the originally population of both male and female.
Students will then review the change and reflect on the differences
and how this could have come to be over time.

Objectives: SWBAT:
… describe ways that humans change locations and immigrate to other
nations
…. understand diverse populations have become more common in
highly populated regions

Ethnicity places, and design that define, shape, enhance,
and empower their lives

with societal, cultural, and historical context to
deepen understanding
Team Size and Roles:
Students will work in groups of 3. Students will be divided randomly with numbers and
will have to decide amongst themselves which student will do what in the group and how
they will work together to complete the activity. Students will be able to choose from the
following roles:
- The Data Collector: Student will be required to enter the data into the sheets
document based on the number of population size and number of diverse
population pre and currently.
- The Reflection Researcher: Student will be required to research information for
their reflection and how the populations have become diverse.
- The Discussion Director: Student will encourage discussion between the group
exploring new ideas and assisting the data collector and reflection researcher in
both management of information and integrating information.
All students in each group are responsible for the entire assignment by collecting the
data integrating it into the google sheets doc and reflecting on the change.

Directions

1 ) Sign in and create a Google Sites document and share it with both your team member and
myself; lcleary1@emich.edu

2 ) Label the top bars the original population of males and females each having their own box.
List the males and females population size of the countries provided on the information sheets
as well as the ethnic population sizes of both male and female. Then Follow the same process
for the current population sizes of both male and female in those countries. Entering the final
percentages of both male and female originally and currently.

3 ) Students must conduct the final percentages of each country with both male and female and
the ethnicities of the nations both original and currently and compare the data.

4 ) Using the data students will then research information regarding population change of both
male and female and use that information for their reflection document.

5 ) Students will create a google docs document and share it within their group members as
well with me (Address shared above) and use this document to combine their shared
viewpoints and reflections of the data they found compared to the information they discovered
using online sources.
