Pre-test: I will set up boards around the
room with each topic that will be
covered in our research paper unit
plan: Thesis for Research Paper, MLA
Formatting & Citing, Finding &
Evaluating Scholarly/Reliable Sources,
Research Paper Outline, Conclusion
Development, and Selecting &
Integrating Quotes. Students will go
around the room with multicolored
sticky notes with their names on them
and place them where they think they
belong: Green= “Comfortable”, Yellow=
“I know what this is, but I’m not that
comfortable with this”, Red= “I don’t
know what this is, I am not comfortable
with this”. I chose these topics based
off of their last analytical papers. These
are the elements that I found students
to struggling with.
Post-test: After having lessons on each
of these topics (depth of material
depends on pre-test), students will
write a research paper where they will
have a clear, developed thesis, use
proper MLA format, use scholarly
sources, complete a thorough outline,
properly select and integrate quotes,
and have a strong conclusion. The same
activity with the sticky notes will be
repeated.
High Impact
Well-developed and clear thesis, use of appropriate
Pre – Post Changes: sources, proper MLA formatting and citing,
Green  Green thorough outline, properly integrated quotes, and a
Red  Green strong conclusion. A high impact rating would also
occur when students moved from green to green or
red to green in the measure of students learning
self-assessment.
Moderate Impact
Contains a clear thesis that could be more
Yellow  Green developed, use of some appropriate sources, limited
Red  Yellow or incorrect MLA format and citing, an outline that
may not be thorough, quotes that are not
completely integrated, and a conclusion that could
be stronger. A moderate rating would also occur
when students moved from yellow to green or red
to yellow in the measure of students learning self-
assessment.
Low Impact
Any Decline Unclear or no thesis, inappropriate sources,
Yellow  Yellow incorrect MLA format and no citing, no outline or an
Red  Red incomplete outline, all dropped quotes or no
quotes, and a weak conclusion. A low impact rating
would also occur when students decline in anyway
or if they remain yellow to yellow or red to red in
the measure of students learning self-assessment.
