“Recycle, Reuse and Rumble”

 An estimated 12.6 million deaths each year are attributable to unhealthy
environments. Environmental risk factors, such as air, water and soil pollution, chemical
exposures, climate change, and ultraviolet radiation, contribute to more than 100 diseases and
injuries 1. The Recycle, Reuse and Rumble Foundation was created to help individuals of
the community reduce waste and recycle by providing free educational sessions for members
of all ages but targeting the adolescent population specifically. The Recycle, Reuse and
Rumble Foundation will conduct educational sessions on waste management, recycling,
water and air pollution and natural disasters. We will provide better access to resources and
information for those in need.

1. Goal 1: After one month of the program, 50% of the target population will
display proper recycling techniques at home, in school and in the community.
2. Goal 2: By the end of the program, 100 % of individuals will participate in
the annual drive where a clothing drive is available speaking on the
importance of proper waste management. They will also create booths on
what they have learned on a topic of their choice.
3. Goal 3: After 1 year in the program, individuals will be able to identify 2
benefits themselves or their family members have made to improving air
pollution in their community. This will be a PowerPoint presentation or video
to show others in the session.
The primary target population will consist of adolescents aged 10 to 19, living in Prince
William County, Virginia. It is necessary to teach individuals while they are young so that
the information learned will last a lifetime. The foundation will be open to family members
as well as everyone is a victim of poor environmental health.
1. Behavioral- “If countries do not take actions to make environments where people live
and work healthy, millions will continue to become ill and die too young 1.” Those who are
eager to learn and help the community.
2. Cultural- Being able to serve individuals of different race, sex and age group.
Bilingual sessions will also be conducted to help Hispanic community as many of them reside
in the community
3. Demographic-Being able to serve individuals of any educational or income level. We
are working together to help the community. This program is completely free of charge. We
hope that you take away information that will stick with you.
4. Physical- Individuals with medical conditions, disorders and illnesses are able to
attend as we will work to accommodate you.
5. Psychographic- This program is open to the public. We want everyone to feel free
and comfortable to attend. We will discuss attitudes and how living in a healthy environment
will affect your mood.
The secondary audience of this program will consist of family members, sponsors,
and the local media.

Since this program is aimed to educate the community, there will be many donations coming
in from parents, teachers, the local health district as well as research departments. The class
space will be free since it will be held at the community center. The program will be free of
charge as we do not want adolescents worrying about money. This will ensure that
adolescents, their family members as well as the community are taking a step in the right
direction. The primary goal is to have the program in communities all over the world. The
overall goal is to raise and exceed the current standards in our community by educating
individuals on how to live environmentally healthy lives.

 I chose independent cross-sectional studies for my evaluation plan. In this design,
information is collected before and after intervention, but it is collected from different
intended audience members each time 2. Educational sessions/pre-test will be given out at
the beginning of the program and a post-test will be given to individuals on the last day to see
how much they have learned. Six months after the program, we will check in to see how they
are doing and seeing if they are using the information learned in their everyday lives.
Social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will be available as well as
brochures handed out around the community. We will also reach out to the local radio
station, WPGC 95.5 to get the word out. Currently, the majority of young adults are on social
media, so that will be our largest focus. Face-to-face interaction is important as well. We
will set up booths with brochures and business cards at college campuses near by.
Participants will see a major difference after attending.

The Prince William Health District will be working with us to ensure that we have all
the materials that we need to run the program. They also work to prevent the transmission of
disease through food, water, and sewage, and works closely with other agencies to protect the
environment.

Currently, there are not many programs like this that focus on environmental health
and the adolescent population. This will ensure that the environmental health is being
improved and waste is being reduced, decreasing death and disease in the community. We
hope that by attending this program, individuals will see that caring for the world we live in is
not a hassle like many think. When you keep up with the care of your community, it is fun
and rewarding!
