EDSC LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE R evised 1.4.17

Construct an assessment plan for one lesson in a larger instructional sequence that includes at least two
formative and one summative assessment. You will be assessed on alignment with the assessment with the
stated objectives; completeness of the plans (includes at least two different types of formative assessment and
one summative assessment; use of multiple measures to assess student learning with an appropriate match
between instrument and objective to be measured (includes formal and informal, and multiple modes of
assessment); adherence to the guidelines for different types of assessment; and explanation of the purpose
and inferences that can be drawn from each assessment as well as how students will be informed of their
results.

For directions on how to complete this form, see EDSC Lesson Plan Directions and Scoring Guide in the SSCP Handbook at www.sscphandbook.org.

You must also include copies of each assessment (formal and informal) as well as any answer keys, rubrics, or
scoring criteria for formal assessments. This will mean defining the culminating (summative) assessment for
the instructional sequence/unit as well as the formative assessments for one day in that instructional
sequence/unit. To be clear, the summative assessment will, in all likelihood, be administered on a different day
as the formative assessments used in your lesson. Unless the lesson is from the start of an instructional
sequence or unit, you might not use an entry level (diagnostic) assessment. You MUST include a summative
assessment because you must know what your students are working towards. You do not have to include an
entry level assessment, but it MAY be counted as one of your two required formative assessments if you wish.

CHAPTER:_2_

“Why choose this word instead of something else?” Word choice conveys an author or character’s thoughts,
feelings, or emotions about someone or something. Although word choice can be subtle, the impact it creates
is significant. Think about connotation and denotation.

Directions: The four words below are picked for you. Write three synonyms for each word below from this
chapter . Then, explain why you believe Golding chose the listed vocab word instead the synonyms. What does
it reveal about the character or situation?

EXAMPLE
Word: fair
Synonyms: blonde, light, equal
Why this word?: I believe Golding uses “fair” to describe Ralph in order to create an image of him that
represents everything that should be good.

Flies Symbol Project
Lord of the Flies

You will assigned a major symbol that relates to Lord of the Flies. Next, you
will design a creative poster that illustrates this object in the beginning, middle,
and end of the story, and what the symbol represents based on the changes.
Your poster should contain one quotation from the novel that demonstrates the
object’s significance in the beginning, middle, and end stage. To accompany
your poster, you will write a one to two paragraph explanation and present a one
to three minute speech.

Requirements:
Requirements
1. Your poster must be visible and eye-catching. This means it must be
larger than an 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper.
2. The quotes from the novel must be written largely and be easy to read.
I recommend having your quote next to each drawing of the symbol. It
should be cited appropriately (page numbers, who said it).
3. BE CREATIVE! Use colors and shapes to demonstrate your symbol’s
significance. I do not want to see a poster that only contains clip art or
cut outs from a magazine. You may use these items, but it must be
clear to me that you put original thought and effort into your poster.
4. Write one to two paragraphs to describe your poster. Include your
quote, explain your design, and explain the thought behind the
illustrations. It should be clear that you fully understand what your
symbol represents. This should be on a separate piece of paper and
NOT attached to the poster.
5. You will also give a two to three minute oral presentation of your poster.
Practice your presentation ahead of time. You must talk more than one
minute but no more than three.
