Synchronous generators for steam and gas turbines

Pre-engineered generators – Packing system

ABB is a leading supplier of synchronous

turbine-driven generators to power utili-
ties, paper mills, sugar plants, oil and gas
installations, and many other sectors.
We have been manufacturing generators
for more than 120 years and have exten-
sive application experience with tens of
thousands of installations all over the
world. ABB offers reliable and efficient
power generation with worldwide
support.

In all cases generators are provided

with transport protection.

Standard packaging 1, shrink film for road transport

Desiccant can be used if the packaging will not be opened
directly after arrival, i.e. within two weeks of packing. Tarpaulins
must not be used during transportation, because there is a
risk of abrasion damage through the PE film. Wooden bearers
are used under the generator. Tectyl is applied to metal surfaces.
As a minimum the package is marked with: package number,
net weight, gross weight, dimensions, handling marks, center
of gravity, lashing points and lifting eyes. The packing list is
enclosed. Wooden parts are marked according to ISPM 15.
(See MDD 3BSM 903139).

Standard packaging 2, shrink film with corrosion

protection – for overseas transport by ro/ro vessel
Desiccant is used to allow the package to be stored for
12 months after packing. Tectyl is applied to metal surfaces.
Tarpaulins must not be used during transportation, because
there is a risk of abrasion damage through the PE film.
Wooden bearers are used under the generator. As a minimum
the package is marked with: package number, net weight,
gross weight, dimensions, handling marks, center of gravity,
lashing points and lifting eyes. The packing list is enclosed.
Wooden parts are marked according to ISPM 15.
Wooden case, for overseas transport where
ro/ro vessels are not available
Shrink film and desiccant are used inside the case to
allow the package to be stored for 12 months after packing.
Tectyl is applied to metal surfaces. Metal beams are used
to reinforce the case. Bolts are provided at the ends of
the beams for use as lashing points. As a minimum the
package is marked with: package number, net weight,
gross weight, dimensions, handling marks, center of
gravity, lashing points and sling marks. The packing list

3AAM100609 EN 03-2013
is enclosed. Marked according to ISPM 15.

Plywood box and wooden box, for MTB, spare parts,

coolers, foundation details and GCP, etc, when the
generator is packed in a wooden case
For good protection and low weight, plywood packaging
is used for MTB, GCP, spare parts and similar, and wooden
boxes are also used for foundation details, coolers etc.
Shrink film and desiccant are used inside the box to allow
the package to be stored for 12 months after packing.
As a minimum the package is marked with: package number,
net weight, gross weight, dimensions, handling marks, and
center of gravity. Boxes that are to be lifted by crane also
have sling marks. The packing list is enclosed. Wooden
parts are marked according to ISPM 15.

Packing of small goods

Different types of packing can be used for small goods,
including pallets, corrugated board, wooden and plywood
boxes. The choice depends on the goods, weight and type
of transport, such as trailer, rail, sea or air freight.
