World War I Storybook Project

CCS 11.4.5 – Analyze the political, economic and social ramifications of World
War I on the homefront.

Your task is to write a storybook for 5th graders to teach them about World War I.
Think about some of the characteristics of your favorite childhood stories… the
characters, comedy, adventure, science fiction, etc, and use a similar theme in your
book to portray your story of WWI. Your story will include at least one main
character. You can choose from:
1. James- a 19 year old man drafted into the Army
2. Sarah- a 20 year old nurse who joins the war effort
You may rename the main character, and add different characteristics but the basic
traits must remain. You may also have additional characters such as a significant
other or sibling your character writes to, or has adventures with.

Your storybook should include the following:

● Title page
● Table of Contents
● Clearly labeled/titled chapters
● Clearly labeled page numbers (that correlate with the table of contents)
● At least one appropriate visual for each chapter (hand drawn or printed from
the Internet)
● Thorough, well written chapters on the following topics:
o Causes of World War I and Who’s Involved
o America Gets Involved
o The Trenches
o American Troops
o Technology
o Government Agencies and Civilian Support
o Civil Liberties
o Social Change
o President Wilson’s Plans for Peace
o The Treaty of Versailles
