The divine Ms M
A local primary school teacher will dismiss her class for the last
time this week, following a 41-year-long teaching career to over
700 students.
Sandy Mortimer will be finishing up her 31-year-long teaching
position at Ballan Primary School this week, beginning her
tenure in 1988.
The grade six teacher says her favourite memory over the years
is “just the kids, because that’s why we do this.”
“When you have stayed here so long, there’s some consistency.
Because they’re not country kids, and not city kids, they are
unique. The kids are fantastic, the staff is wonderful, and the
school community is really supportive…so why go?” she said.
A penchant for history is something Ms Mortimer says has
influenced her teaching over the years.
“Anything I read - such as history - I talk about it [with my
students], because I am my own resource. The more you know,
the more you can share,” she says.
As for her retirement plans, Ms Mortimer plans to travel
overseas, trading Ballan for the rolling hills of Scotland, and to
complete her Master of Arts in History.
“I thought, ‘I would love to live [in Scotland] for a year’, but then
I thought, ‘Who am I kidding?’ I couldn’t possibly cope with
their winters! So, I’ll be going in their summer.”
On what she’s most looking forward to, Ms Mortimer says she
doesn’t “like to plan ahead” and likes to “live in the present”.
“I think having time to relax and catching up with friends…
I’ve found that when you’re retired, you’re even busier than you
were when you were working, so that will be a bit tricky,” she
said. Ms Mortimer and her Grade 5/6 students at Ballan Primary School. Photo – Helen Tatchell

history books, Ms Mortimer will look back fondly on her lengthy

week. (Photos - Todd Whelan)
Boom Devils recruit Nick Graham has cited family culture and a thriving youth policy as
the two major factors luring him to the Darley Football Club for season 2019.
Graham, 25, is certain to be one of the biggest ‘pick-ups’ in country football this off-season, a
real feather in the Devil’s cap given the demand for post AFL players’ signatures.
The talented midfielder joins the Devils after five seasons and 46 games with AFL club
Carlton.
Ballan Cricket
“I’d been down here (Darley) a couple of times over the last year or so, my brother (Brian)
obviously plays here,” he said.
“The way they (Darley) made my family feel was a big pull, it really drew me to the club.”
Graham is primed to have an immediate impact at Darley given his ‘Midfield’ coach
appointment.
All junior and senior cricket in the Ballarat & District Cricket Association was washed out
“I bring some experience to the midfield... and Heath Scotland was pretty keen for me to
over the weekend, including Darley Cricket.
share my knowledge with the young playing group.”
“Bringing the Under 19s through was something that drew me (to the club) as well.” he said. The Ballan club held their Christmas breakup at the Recreation Reserve on the Saturday
“I was big on a Club that just didn’t bring players in, and that actually had home-grown night with Santa arriving to spread the Christmas cheer to the kids, and the bigger kids
talent. (Michael Vallance pictured). Photo- Chris Thom.
“I think we had seven Under 19s play last year and hopefully (next season) that will help
drive the standards.”
While Graham was obviously excited about his new role, there will be one player he will
need to keep in check - his brother, Brian.
“I’ll certainly let him know if he doesn’t give me the footy,” Nick said with tongue in cheek.
The future combination of Nick and Brian Graham through the Darley midfield will provide
Brad ‘coffs’ up
its fair share of challenges for opposition teams. The prospect of a third Graham (Chris)
returning to Darley wasn’t out of the question either as Nick spoke after his first night on the
track with his new Devils.
“I’m in his ear a fair bit but he has a young family so obviously that comes first,” he said.

Ballan Bowling Club
“We’re still hopeful, you just never know.”
David Myers held the accolade of
seven club championship titles to
his name for a long time, until Brad
Coffey came along and equalled his
record in 2017.
The 2018 tournament saw Brad Coffey
edge to victory at the Ballan Bowling
Club Men’s Club Championship, to
claim number eight victory.
Mr Coffey defeated Marcus Darley,
25-14, telling the Ballan Bowling Club
facebook page the match was a very
tight tussle throughout the afternoon.
“At times I felt I really had to dig
deep to come away the winner.
“I went into the match thinking I
have been in good form lately, but
knew Marcus plays a very solid game
and would keep the pressure right
up. So I wanted to make sure I got off

Mr Darley said Cof got off to a flying
