TH E WOMAN W HO
LIVED IN A TREE
J ulia Hill, an American woman, was bom in 1974. She was
23 years old when she discovered that a company wanted
to cut down part of a forest in California. In the forest there
were lots of redwood trees. One of the trees was 70 metres
tall and 1 ,0 0 0 years old.
Julia wasn't happy about this. She travelled to California
and climbed up the tree. ‘If I sit in the tree,’ she said, ‘the
company can't cut it down.' At the beginning, Julia planned
to stay in the tree for two weeks. She lived in a small tree-
house and her friends were very helpful - they cooked food for
her every day. She used her mobile phone to talk to her
family and to news reporters. She stayed in the tree day
and night.
Environmental organisations supported her,
but other people weren't on her side and they
tried to stop her. The company used a
helicopter that stayed near her tree-house for
a long time. The helicopter was very noisy and
there was a lot of wind. Julia didn't like it, but
she stayed in the tree.
In the end, she was successful. The
company agreed not to cut down the redwood.
Finally, after two years and eight days in the tree,
Julia Hill climbed down and walked on the ground
again. She and her friends were very happy.

An interesting question is: w h y are they so

talent - a special ability to do something very well.
But perhaps this is not the answer. Some of these
people are not unusually talented. They’re good at

Everyday English
In all languages, young people invent new words or give words new meanings.
Look at the words that young people in Britain used for good between 1950 and
2000. W h at words or phrases are popular with teenagers in your country now?

a W here is Paul going for his next holiday? How long is he
staying there? Read the text quickly to find the answers.

Paul Roberts (15) lives in Mew York. Like thousands

of other American students, he usually goes aw^y
to a summer camp during the school holidays.
These camps are just for teenagers, without their
parents, and Paul always has a great time.
But this summer he's doing something different
he’s going on an adventure holiday in Hawaii.
He tells us about his arrangements.

‘It’s a camping holiday for three weeks in Hawaii,

for kids from 14 to 18. I'm leaving on 23 July
and coming back on 12 August.
First, we’re putting on backpacks and hiking
through the jungle on an old native Hawaiian
trail. They say it’s incredibly beautiful, with
huge waterfalls and spectacular beaches.

b Now read the text again. Tick the activities that Paul is doing on his holiday.

88 Module 3
After this five-day walk, we're staying for two days
in a valley on the Pacific Ocean. The main activity
here will be surfing. I don't know how to surf, but
instructors will teach us how to do it, and I’m really
looking forward to this.
Then the organisers are providing mountain bikes
and we're going for long rides - about 30 miles a
day, around one of Hawaii's volcanoes. And on one
day we’re meeting a local Hawaiian family and
helping them to plant fruit trees on their farm.

After that, we’re sailing for three days along the coast, and they
say we’ll have a chance to swim with dolphins and sea turtles!
This sounds fantastic. Finally, we’re going out for three days in
sea kayaks - we're visiting sea caves and we’ll be swimming
and snorkelling too.
Every night for the three weeks, we’re camping in tents, usually
on the beach. This isn’t a holiday for couch potatoes! They say
.you have to be fit, and of course .you have to know how to swim
and ride a bike. But I think it's going to be a fantastic experience!
