This is the third and the last part of the Arthas&stra,
The readings of the Punjab and Mysore editions as compared
with those in this, the Trivandrum edition, are given as
Appendix No. I. An index of important and difficult words
occurring in the work is given as Appendix No. IT and the
archaic words as No. ILI.
There are two divisions of samrasam in draPrafahe.
am, known as aqgdraretag and Gawain. The first
teaches hunger-remedying yogas which would enable one to
observe monthly, paksha and other similar fasts. The second
teaches 1 yogu by which one could see through darkness, five
yogas by which it would be possible to walk without being
visible to others, as well as those by which cows, birds ete.,
may be made invisible and several other wonderful yogas of
similar nature. Whether these yogas will be really ‘effective
is a question to be solved by actual practice which is possible
only if the proper ways of applying medicines and man-
tras are well understood, And a correct’ knowledge of these
ways will have to be acquired fr6m persons who are masters
in them. Hence those desirous of practising the yoeas
should have to seek the assistance of masters possessing prac-
tical experience. For our part, we can do nothing but
explain the text and believe in the several statements made
therein, in accordance with our estimate of the author. But
we cannot be expected to show the effects of these yogas just
as the commentator of the passage, arfrat aRearat aaa, cannot
be expected to show the effects of the gf. It is on this
ground that we said towards the end of seewarearrt —

In the gPganarser, Duryodhana is mentioned along with
Ravana. The same Duryodhana is also mentioned along
with Jayatsena, while dealing with gamblers. Again Nali
and Dharmaputra who have sustained defeat at the hands of
the gamblers ave also referred to. It is clear from the above
that in this prakarana Kautalya has the Mahabharata itsel£ in
his pind. Though the stories in the gfaasarem about
Dambhodbhava, Haihayarjuna ete., are all traced in the Ma-
habharata, it has to be found out to what Itihasa the stor
of Dandakya, Karla ete. belong. The same is also the cuse
with the story of Katyayanas é&c, indicated by wager frat
