Entry
300m
Swim: 1.9km
The 1.9km / 1.2 mile swim is an ocean swim. The water temperature should be between 17 and 25 °C, therefore
wetsuits are legal. The course will be swum in an anti-clockwise direction. The first leg will be 300m long – the
buoy must be rounded on the right hand side (buoy must be on your left). After turning left around this buoy the
next leg is 700m, this buoy must also be rounded on the right hand side. The following leg is 200m long and again
you must round the buoy on the right. The final leg before the exit to the beach is 500m long and you need to round
this last buoy on the LEFT. The exit to the beach is 200m away. Ensure you are aware of your start times and when
to enter the swim start area.
3) 3rd Wave:
Who: Age Group men from 45 - 80 years of age
Start time: 07h25
Enter swim start area: 07h15
No athlete can enter the water from the swim area - not even to wet your goggles. You MUST stay behind
the start line prior to the start. If you disobey this rule, you will be given a time penalty. Use the warm-up
area to get ready to race (to the left of the swim area).
RACE DAY: Pre-race final check-in will begin at 05h00 (approx. 2 hours before race start). Athletes will be required to
cross over the mats at the swim start to ensure that we have an accurate count going into the water. Failure to cross
these mats could result in disqualification. For those who wear glasses or hearing aids, please label them with your
name and race number. Tables will be provided at the exit from the swim, where these can be handed in. These can
be picked up here after the swim. There will be showers at the end of the beach run. You will cross a timing mat at
the exit from the beach, which will record your swim time. This is the point you need to have crossed in order to make
the swim cut-off. It is required for our athlete count that you pick up your transition bag. You may not change in the
bag rack area or block another athlete’s progress. Wetsuits may be fully removed in the changing tents only. Public
nudity is prohibited. Please take your bag to the bag drop-off zone outside the changing tent. (NB: It is the athletes’
responsibility to ensure ALL their equipment is placed in the bag and securely closed - please CLEARLY mark your
wetsuit with your name.
Please pick up your swim bag, which you placed in the Athlete Tent area, after the race or if you withdraw from the
race. This needs to be picked up before 17h00.
RULES:
1. Each swimmer must wear a swim cap provided by the race organisers. Wearing swim goggles or a face mask is
recommended, but optional. Wetsuits are permitted.
2. No fins, paddles, snorkels, or flotation devices of any kind are allowed.
3. Please be sure your timing chip is properly fixed on your left ankle.
4. No individual paddlers or escorts will be allowed. The Swim Course will be adequately patrolled by surfboards,
kayaks and patrol boats.
5. Time penalties will be imposed on athletes not behind the official start line 5 minutes prior to each wave start. The
Warm-up Area is to the left of the Start Area. Once you cross the timing mats to the Start Area, you cannot exit
this area for any reason.
6. Swimmers are required to stay on course, swim anti-clockwise and keep course markers to the left, except for the
last buoy, which will be on your RIGHT. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
7. A swimmer experiencing difficulty and in need of assistance MUST raise an arm overhead, pump it up and down,
and call or seek assistance. A swimmer who has received assistance, whether voluntary or involuntary, must
retire and withdraw from the remainder of the race, unless such assistance did not aid the swimmer in making
forward progress. No swimmer shall return to the race if the official rendering assistance requests that the par-
ticipant withdraws from the race or receive medical assistance.
8. The swim course will be CLOSED 1 hour and 10 minutes after the start of each wave. Athletes who have not
crossed the timing mat that records the end of the swim will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue
the event.
9. After the swim, athletes must collect their Cycle Bag. This is a security measure designed to maintain an
accurate count of swimmers in and out of the water.
10. After the swim, athletes must dress for the cycle leg of the race in designated changing tents only. Wetsuits may
be stripped to the waist only and completely removed in the changing tent only. No dressing will be allowed in
the bike holding area as it impedes traffic through the bike lanes. Public nudity is prohibited. Athletes who do not
follow this rule will be given a 4 minute penalty in the Penalty Box.
11. After changing, drop off Cycle Bag in designated “bag drop-off zone”, outside changing tent.
The cycle is a single 90km lap course. The first portion is along the Esplanade (beach front) were-after the route
follows the R72 motorway towards the Nahoon River. The route then turns left and follows the N2 highway
towards King Williams Town. It is a continuous gentle climb with a few flat sections to the turn-around point at
Berlin just outside East London (45km). The return route is on the opposite side of the N2 highway back to
Transition. There will be full road closure.
The gearing that is recommended is 52/38 in the front and 12/25 at the back. Deep sections, discs and bladed
wheels will be suitable, but if the wind blows you might battle with a solid. The route will be closed to civilian
vehicles. Aid Stations will be available, at 18km, 45km and 72km. The cut-off time for the cycle is 4 hours 5mins.
If you did not achieve the 4 hours 5mins cut-off, you will not be allowed to start the run leg. Cut-off times will be
applied at the entrance of the Transition area.
The cut-off time for the cycle leg is 4 hours 5mins from start of cycle leg.ave 1: 12:15pm | Wave 2: 12:20pm |
Wave 3: 12:30pm | Wave 4: 12
2. All Athletes are required to ride road/racing bikes. For Individuals - Mountain bikes, beach cruisers and bikes
with coaster-type brakes are prohibited. For Teams - mountain bikes will be allowed.
3. No tandems, recumbents and fairings or any add-on devices designed exclusively to reduce
resistance are allowed. Solid disc wheels are allowed. Any new, “unusual” or prototype
equipment will be subject to a determination of legality by the Bike Director and/or the Chief Race Referee.
4. All bikes and helmets will be checked in on the Saturday prior to race day. Race officials
reserve the right to reject any bike / helmet not meeting safety standards. If the bike does not meet safety
standards, the Athlete will be required to correct the problem before participating in the race. There will be
an Official Bike Shop (Cycle HQ / Triangle Sports) gazebo at the entrance to Transition where bikes can be
adjusted or repaired. Once your bike is checked into the holding area, only small covers on the bike
computer will be allowed. Large plastic bags that cover the entire bike will not be permitted.
5. Shoes must be in the Bike Transition Bags or secured to bike pedals. Shoes may NOT be beside the bike.
Shoes and shirt must be worn at all times.
6. Each Athlete must wear the IRONMAN issued race number at all times while on the course. Race number
must be placed low on BACK of rider’s jersey or on the race belt where it is clearly visible. Folding or cutting
race number or intentional alteration of any kind is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
7. No MP3 players or cell phones are permitted during the cycle leg. Athletes will be disqualified if caught us-
ing one.
8. Individual support will be not be allowed. There are no Special Needs stations in an IRONMAN 70.3 race.
9. Athletes must be individually responsible for the repair and maintenance of their own bike. Assistance by
anyone, other than IRONMAN technical support officials will be grounds for disqualification. Each cyclist
should be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction. Technical support DOES NOT include
the normal changing of flat tyres. You may not receive a spare wheel if yours breaks. You can carry your bike
to finish the cycle portion of the race, as long as you finish in the allotted time for the cycle.
10. Athletes are expected to heed directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities
11. Athletes may walk with their bike, if necessary, but may not make progress on the bike course
unaccompanied by their bicycle.
12. After completing the cycle leg, athletes must pick up their Run Transition Bags. This is a security measure
designed to maintain an accurate count of bikers still on the course.
13. All Athletes must mount and dismount in the marked zones at the transition area. Under no circumstances
should a participant ride his/her bike inside the Transition area.
14. Absolutely NO DRAFTING of another bike or any other vehicle is allowed. The 10-meter Draft Zone rule will
apply. Athletes must ride single file on the far left side of the road except when passing another rider. All
passing is to the right.
15. Athletes MUST move to the RIGHT upon entering the 10-metre Draft Zone. In other words, no slipstreaming of
the Athlete ahead is allowed when passing. Failing to move right when passing will result in a drafting viola-
tion.
16. You have to ride directly behind the athlete in front of you. You can only move out when you want to pass. If
you stay out it is called “BLOCKING” and you will be penalised. You have 25 seconds to get your front wheel
in front of the front wheel of the athlete that you are overtaking. He/she then has 25 seconds to get back 10
metres.
17. Referees will whistle and firstly call your number and warn you that you are in violation of a rule. If you don’t
respond they will then whistle and show you a Yellow Card (any other penalty) or Red card (Drafting). This
means you have to stop at the next penalty tent on the course. A yellow card is for any rule violation besides
drafting and requires you to sign into the tent and then you can leave. If you don’t report to the tent, 4 minutes
will be added to your finish time. A red card is for drafting. If you don’t report at all, you will be disqualified.
If you report a yellow card but received a red card, you will also be disqualified. The referee in charge of
the penalty tent will cross your race number. You NEED TO INFORM STAFF OF WHICH CARD YOU RECEIVED.
There will be 2 penalty tents – 1 on the course at the 45km turn point and 1 in transition. Any combination of 3
cards and you will be disqualified.
18. The draft zone, with respect to a motor vehicle, is a rectangular area extending 3 meters to each side of the
vehicle and 30 meters behind the vehicle. It is the Athlete’s responsibility to continually communicate to the
vehicle to move away.
19. Your bike will be checked out using your TIMING CHIP and Chip Belt. If you are unable to fetch your own
bike for any reason, a family member or friend may collect it for you as long as they have the Bike Check-Out
card + your timing chip and chip belt present at check out. Your Bike Check-Out Card will be included in your
Registration packs.
PLEASE NOTE: NO bike will leave transition without the exchange of your timing chip & chip belt!

hint you may need it. You will not be penalized for receiving medical evaluation. You will be withdrawn from the
race only if you require transportation, IV fluids or if medical personnel feel your continued participation is not in

realize. The medical personnel will do all they can to keep you in the race and asure a safe finish. Also, please be
attentive when passing through Aid Stations to avoid the possibility of accident or injury to yourself or another.
The medical tent will officially close at 17h00. All athletes seeking medical attention after that time will be

by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The Medical Headquarters is located in the post-race area on the beach front. More than half of the visits occur
after athletes have finished the race. Please do not leave the finish area until your friends are certain you are
okay, until you can drink without vomiting and stand without dizziness.
