Lab 5: Turbine Engine Demonstration Experiment

Group Report due on 04/11/18

Objective:

Analysis data collected from a real turbine, include the following plots:

• Compressor Inlet and Outlet Pressure vs. Time

• Compressor Inlet and Outlet Temperature vs. Time
• Turbine Inlet and Outlet Pressure vs. Time
• Turbine Inlet and Outlet Temperature vs. Time
• Exhaust Gas Temperature vs. Time
• Fuel Flow vs. Time
• Thrust at Compressor Inlet vs. Time
• Thrust at Nozzle Exit vs. Time
• Equivalence Ratio vs. Time

Compare and contrast the trends between these data and comment on any anomalies within the data. Also
explain the results in comparison to an ideal Brayton cycle. Clearly state all assumptions including any
assumed properties.

Notes:

• We are using commercial grade Jet-A as a fuel in this turbine, assume that the chemical formula for Jet-A
can be approximated by that of Dodecane.

• Take the cross-sectional area of the compressor inlet at the location of the temperature and pressure
measurement to be 0.0031 m2

• Take the cross-sectional area of the nozzle exit at the location of the temperature and pressure
measurement to be 0.0025 m2

• For this lab, you are not required to submit a picture of the VI.

• Three data sets are posted; you are only required to do the analysis for your favorite of the three.
