THE APOSTLES

ST. PETER
Feast day: June 29
Other name: Simon
Death: Crucified on the cross with head downwards in Rome
because he claimed he was not worthy to die in the same
manner as Jesus Christ.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Fishermen and Popes.
Profile:
• Fisherman
• Brother of St. Andrew (Led him to Christ)
• Renamed as Peter – meaning rock – by Jesus to indicate
that he would be the rock-like foundation on which the
Church would be built.
• Bishop of Antioch and later, of Rome.
• First pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

ST. ANDREW
Feast day: November 30
Other names: Andreas/Endres the Apostle
Death: Crucified on a Satire (x-shaped) cross in Greece.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Fishermen and Scotland.
Apostolic Symbol: St. Andrew’s cross (x-shaped cross)
Profile:
• Fisherman
• Brother of Simon Peter
• Follower of John the Baptist.
• The first Apostle.

ST. JOHN
Feast day: December 27
Other names: John the Evangelist; Beloved Apostle
Death: Said to be the only disciple to die a natural death.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Rain and for poisoning cases.
Apostolic Symbol: A chalice with a snake in it.
Profile:
• Fisherman
• Brother of St. James the Great.
• Disciple of St. John
• Together with James, they were the privileged apostles
who witnessed the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairu’s
daughter, and the Agony in the Garden.
• Made guardian of Our Lady by Jesus.
• Wrote the fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and possibly the
Book of Revelation.

ST. JAMES
Feast day: July 25
Other names: James, the Greater
Death: Stabbed with a sword by King Herod Agrippa in
Jerusalem.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Chemists, Pilgrims, and Spain.
Apostolic Symbol: Scallop shell – a symbol of pilgrimage by
sea, and the sword of martyrdom.
Profile:
• Fisherman
• Brother of St. John and possibly Jesus’ cousin.
• Disciple of John the Baptist
• Together with John, they were ……. *see St. John’s prof.*
• First apostle to be martyred.
• He is the only apostle whose death is recorded in
scripture.

ST. PHILIP
Feast day: May 3
Death: Martyred by crucifixion or the spear, or bound to a
cross and stoned to death at Phyrgia.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Uruguay
Apostolic Symbol: Basket filled with bread.
Profile:
• Brought St. Nathanael to Christ
• Sometimes confused with Philip the Evangelist.
• Shy, naive, ad practical individual.
ST. BARTHOLOMEW
Feast day: August 24
Other name: Nathanael
Death: Flayed (Stripping off the skin) alive at Armenia.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Neurological diseases, plasterers,
leather workers, and butcherers.
Apostolic Symbol: Flaying or tanner’s knife; Human skin
Profile:
• Brought about by St. Philip to Jesus.
• His relics are thought to be preserved in Rome.

ST. MATTHEW
Feast day: September 21
Other name: Levi
Death: Either he was burned, stoned, or beheaded.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Accountants and Bankers
Apostolic Symbol: Angel holding a pen or inkwell or money
bags.
Profile:
• Roman tax collector.
• Author of the first Gospel.
• His Gospel was written to convince Jewish readers that
their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of
Jesus.

ST. THOMAS
Feast day: July 3
Other names: Didymus; Doubting Thomas
Death: Stabbed to death with a spear while praying on a hill.
Patronage: Patron Saint of Builders and Architects
Apostolic Symbol: Group of spears, stones and arrows.
Profile:
• He was ready to die with Jesus when Jesus went to
Jerusalem, but is best remembered for doubting the
Resurrection until allowed to touch Christ’s wounds.
