CASH-ONLY ECONOMY
» Do not change money at the airport or at banks – the official exchange rate is a
fraction of the black market rate.
» US dollar bills are the easiest to exchange but must be the latest version (multi-
coloured bills from 2006 or later) and in absolutely perfect condition: no folds,
stamps, stains, writing or tears.
» No ATMs accept foreign cards – take all the cash (ideally in US dollars) you’ll need.
»Your best bet for changing money in Yangon is Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott
Market; p491) or your hotel.
» Parkroyal (p492) is the only hotel in Yangon that may be able to give you a cash
advance on your Visa credit card (12% commission).

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL
Myanmar has a bad human rights record. Even though a quasi-civilian government was
elected in 2010 (see p537) many countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia and
those of the European Union, still apply economic sanctions. In 2010 the tourism boy-
cott, first called for by the National League for Democracy (NLD) in 1995, was officially
dropped; the party, as well as the vast majority of locals, welcome independent tourists;
MYANMAR (BURMA) YA N G O N ( R A N G O O N )

however, the NLD asks visitors not to join large group package tours.
Before deciding whether to visit Myanmar, we recommend reading up on the coun-
try’s troubled past and complicated present; see the boxed text (p539) for suggestions.
If you do go, this chapter has been researched and designed to enable you to maximise
how much of your travel budget goes directly to local people and minimise how much
goes to the regime. Tips for responsible travel:
» Travel independently rather than in a big tour group.

» Avoid using businesses owned by the government or those closely linked with it.
» Spread your money around, ie buy souvenirs across the country, not just in Yangon.
»Talk to locals – they relish outside contact – but don’t compromise them by your
actions or topics of conversation.
» Contribute to local charitable causes.
For more information read Lonely Planet’s expanded Responsible Travel coverage
in the Myanmar guidebook and have a look at the website www.lonelyplanet.com/

YANGON’S STREET EATS

Yangon’s street-food options can be both overwhelming and challenging (pork offal on a
skewer, anyone?). Some of our favourites and the best places to eat them:
» Samusa thoke During the day a line of vendors (Map p490; Mahabandoola Garden St;
per serve K500) near Mahabandoola Park sell this ‘salad’ of sliced samosas served with
a thin lentil gravy.
» Bein moun & moun pyar thalet These delicious ‘Burmese pancakes’ (K200),
served sweet (bein moun) or savoury (moun pyar thalet), can be found at most
Yangon corners day and night.
» Dosai At night along Anawratha St several street-side vendors sell this thin southern
Indian crepe (from K500), known in Burmese as to-shay.
» Mohinga This soup of thin rice noodles and fish broth is just about everywhere but
our favourite is from Myaung Mya Daw Cho (Map p490; 158 51st St; soup from K500;
h4.30-9am). There’s no English sign here; look for the green sign near some trees.
» Grilled food Every night, the strip of 19th St between Mahabandoola and Anawrahta
Rds hosts dozens of stalls and open-air restaurants serving grilled snacks (Map
p493; meals from K5000; h5-11pm) and draught beer.

YANGON’S CAFE CULTURE

Yangon’s numerous teashops are not just places to have cups of milk tea and coffee or
tiny pots of Chinese tea. They’re also places to hang out with locals, grab a snack or a
better breakfast than provided at your guesthouse. The following are our top three
Yangon teashops. All are open approximately 6am to 4pm, a cup of tea costs about
K250, and snacks and light meals start at about K400.
» Lucky Seven (Map p490; 49th St) Our all-around favourite – tidy, lively and with
excellent food. The mohinga (soup of thin rice noodles and fish broth) is outstanding,
as are most other Burmese-style noodle dishes.
» Shwe We Htun (Map p490; 81 37th St) A buzzing old-school teashop that serves
better quality food than most. There’s no English sign, but you’ll know it by the crowds.
» Thone Pan Hla (Map p493; 454 Mahabandoola Rd) This centrally located teashop
features an English-language menu of teashop staples.

Although it has gentrified significantly in the last few years, the 13km of wide, white-

BORDER CROSSING: KAWTHOUNG–RANONG

Kawthoung (also known as Victoria Point), at the far southern end of Myanmar, is a legal
crossing point for foreign tourists coming from Thailand, but lacks transport links with the
rest of Myanmar. As with all Myanmar’s land crossings (or in this case, water crossings),
visits are restricted to a limited number of days within a limited area, you have to leave your
passport at the border and you’re generally expected to return the same way you came in.
Though it’s not possible for travellers already in Myanmar to exit the country via this
crossing, you can visit Kawthoung on a ‘visa trip’ from Thailand. Several travel agencies
in Ranong offer these trips for about 400B, but it is easy enough to do unassisted. Boats
to Kawthoung leave the Saphan Pla pier, located about 10km from Ranong, regularly
from around 8am till 4pm (200B, 40 minutes). After getting your passport stamped
by Thai immigration, board one of the boats near the immigration office and you’ll be
taken to the Myanmar immigration office, where you must surrender your passport and
pay a fee of US$10 or 500B for a permit that allows you to stay in Kawthoung for up to
14 days. If you decide to stay – sights include the town’s busy waterfront (Strand Rd)
and a hilltop temple Pyi Taw Aye Paya – there’s the centrally located but overpriced
Honey Bear Hotel (%592 1352; Strand Rd; s/d US$36/48; a).

GETTING TO THAILAND: TACHILEIK TO MAE SAI

Getting to the border At the time of writing, we’d received reports of a few travellers
who had been permitted to cross into Thailand at the seedy frontier smuggling town of
Tachileik with advance permission from MTT in Yangon. Permits are issued in around
two weeks and cost at least $50, but you may be required to book your flights and a taxi
to the border through MTT.
Starting from Mae Sai, in Thailand, it’s straightforward to cross to Tachileik for
the day and slightly more complicated to get a two-week visa and permission to visit
Kengtung where you can visit myriad tribal groups living in the surrounding hills.
At the border The Thai immigration office is officially open from 6.30am to 6.30pm.
After taking care of the usual formalities, cross the bridge and head to the Myanmar
immigration office. Here you pay 500B and have your picture taken for a temporary ID
card that allows you to stay in town for the day; your passport will be kept at the office.
If you’d like to stay longer, or visit Kengtung, you’ll be directed to the adjacent tourist

DINING DOWNTOWN
In the central traveller zone (Map p516) there’s a disappointing lack of inspirational din-

expect anything very special. For something more interesting, get on your bike.
Nay (27th at 82nd St; h5-11.30pm) has roadside tables and serves curry snacks
(K250 to K1000) with fresh chapattis (K150 each). Nylon Ice Cream Bar (83rd St,

more than for its very average Chinese fare. Bakeries Gold Medal (30th St, 81/82) and
SB (80th at 31st St) sell bagged-up super-soft bread and sticky cakes Japanese style.
There’s a gaggle of Shan restaurants around the 83rd/23rd St corner, where Ka-

and semi-sweet tandoori-naan bread (K100) that’s ideal for tea dipping. Golden

THE MOUSTACHE BROTHERS

The Moustache Brothers (Map p513; 39th St, 80/81; donation K8000; h8.30pm) has
earned its reputation as Myanmar’s best-known dissident comedy troupe the hard way.
Two members of the comedy trio, Par Par Lay and Lu Zaw, served six years hard labour
after joking about the government during a performance at Aung San Suu Kyi’s house in
1996; English-speaking Lu Maw had been ‘holding the fort’ back home at the time. Their
MYANMAR (BURMA) M

detention became a cause célèbre among foreign comedians and Par Par Lay was men-
tioned in the Hugh Grant film About a Boy.
They were eventually released in 2002. Before long, however, they were banned from
performing their a-nyeint pwes (traditional folk operas), a blend of in-yer-face slapstick,
dancing and painted signs, by a government fearful of their influence. But they refused
to be silenced. The shows went on as ‘demonstrations’ in their tiny home theatre in the
Mandalay backstreets. Despite a further arrest in 2007, they continue to take the mickey
out of the government, so long as they only perform at home and, most depressing for

the two non-English-speakers, not in Burmese.

As one of the few openly dissenting voices in a nation silenced by fear, it’s well worth
supporting their performance. These days the shows include a slightly indulgent level of
self-parody, but remain one of Mandalay’s greatest talking points for Western visitors.

BAGAN ORIENTATION
Bounded by the Ayeyarwady on its northern and western flanks, Bagan is a vast plain
dotted with settlements. Most independent travellers stay in Nyaung U, home to the bus
station, and 5km northwest of the airport and train station. Old Bagan, about 4km south-
west and atmospherically located amid the bulk of the temples, is an enclave of expensive
hotels. Between here and New Bagan, about 4km further south, is the village of Myinkaba.
Well-paved roads connect these centres, crisscrossed by dirt trails leading to the temples.
In Nyaung U, ‘Main Rd’ is used (locally and in text) to refer to the main strip, which
runs along the north–south Bagan–Nyaung U Rd, and along the Anawrahta Rd from the
market to the Sapada Paya. Just east of the bus station is Yarkinnthar Hotel Rd, more
popularly known as ‘restaurant row’, with lots of eating options.

MT OLYMPUS OF MYANMAR
If you’re in the Bagan area for more than a couple of days, consider a trip to Mt Popa,
the spiritual HQ to Myanmar’s infamous ‘37 nat’ and thus a premier venue for worship of
these pre-Buddhist spirits.
Mt Popa proper is the 1517m extinct volcano covered in lush forests protected within
the Popa Mountain Park; on the mountain’s lower flank is Popa Taung Kalat, a tower-like
737m volcanic plug crowned with a gilded Buddhist temple accessed by 777 steps. The
20-minute climb up goes past devout pilgrims, cheeky monkeys and, occasionally, slow-
stepping hermit monks called yeti. The Mahagiri shrine, at the foot of Popa Taung
Kalat, features a display of the 37 nat.
A pick-up (K3000 each way) leaves Nyaung U bus station at 8.30am, often with a
change in Kyaukpadaung. Far easier is a slot in a share taxi (US$35 split between four
passengers). Ask the driver to point out remnants of the petrified forest along the way
and to pause at toddy palm plantations where you can sample the home-made alcohol
and jaggery (palm sugar).

GETTING TO CHINA: MU-SE TO RUILI

BURMA OR MYANMAR?
What to call the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (the country’s official name as of
2011) has, since 1989, been a political flashpoint. That was the year in which the military
junta dumped Burma, the name commonly used since the mid-19th century, into the
rubbish bin, along with a slew of other British colonial-era place names such as Ran-
goon, Pagan, Bassein and Arakan.

MYANMAR (BURMA) T
The UN recognises Myanmar as the nation’s official name; Myanmar is more inclusive
than Burma for a population that isn’t by any means 100% Burman. However, nearly
all opposition groups (including the NLD), many ethnic groups and several key nations
including the USA and UK continue to refer to it as Burma.
In this book, we go with Myanmar, with Burma used for periods before 1989. ‘Bur-
mese’ refers to the Bamar people, the food and the language.

Even more than with most countries, it’s worth reading up before arriving in Myanmar
to gain a grasp of the country’s political and social complexities. Pick up Lonely Planet’s

Phrasebook. The following are some other recommended titles:

THE FICTION OF MYANMAR STATISTICS

That famous quip about lies, damn lies and statistics rings particularly true in Myanmar.
Even a basic figure such as Myanmar’s population is elusive. The Chinese news agency
Xinhua quotes the government’s 2009 official figure as 59.12 million, while the Asian
Development Bank has it as 58.84 million and the CIA World Factbook as 54 million.
Sean Turnell, an expert in Myanmar’s economy at Sydney’s Macquarie University,
isn’t surprised by this 10% spread. ‘The last full census was back in 1913’, he says,
pointing out that all subsequent attempts at a head count, including the oft-quoted
census from 1983, have been compromised by lack of data from parts of the country
experiencing rebellions and unrest.
Population figures in this chapter are not to be taken as wholly accurate but more as
a way to gauge the relative size of different towns and cities.

DOS & DON’TS

» Don’t touch anyone’s head, as it’s considered the spiritual pinnacle of the body.
» Don’t point feet at people if you can help it, and avoid stepping over people.
» Burmese women don’t ride atop pick-ups as it can be insulting to men beneath them.
» Hand things – food, gifts, money – with your right hand, tucking your left under your

right elbow.
» Dress modestly when visiting religious sites – avoid above-the-knee shorts, tight
clothes or sleeveless shirts.
» Take off your shoes when entering temple precincts, usually including the long steps
up to a hilltop pagoda.

PRACTICALITIES
» Connect (when it’s working) to the electricity supply (230V, 50Hz AC). Power outlets
can have three-pronged, two-pronged round or flat sockets – bring an all-purpose
adaptor. Many hotels have generators (some run at night only). Local power sources
in many towns are scheduled for night hours only.
» Read the English-language newspapers Myanmar Times, which offers some useful
travel and entertainment information, and the government mouthpiece New Light of
Myanmar.
» Bring a shortwave radio and listen, like many locals, to BBC and VOA broadcasts.
» Watch satellite TV rather than the state-controlled broadcast channels – you’ll often
find CNN, BBC World and other news and entertainment channels at hotels.

Myanmar follows a 12-month lunar calendar, and most festivals are on the full moon of
the Burmese month in which they occur – hence shifting dates. The build-up to festivals
can go on for days.

Thingyan (Water Festival) The Burmese New Year is the biggest holiday of the year,
celebrated with a raucous nationwide water fight. It is impossible to go outside without
getting drenched so just join the fun. Businesses close and some transport – especially
buses – stops running for around a week.

June/July
» Buddhist Lent Start of the Buddhist Rains Retreat. Laypeople present monasteries
with new robes, because during the three-month Lent period monks are restricted to
their monasteries.

July/August
» Wagaung Festival Nationwide exercise in alms-giving.

September/October
» Boat Races This is the height of the wet season, so boat races are held in rivers,
lakes and even ponds all over Myanmar. Inle Lake is best.
» Thadingyut Celebrates Buddha’s return from a period of preaching.

October/November
» Tazaungdaing The biggest ‘festival of lights’ sees all Myanmar lit by oil lamps, fire
balloons, candles and even mundane electric lamps.
» Kathein A one-month period at the end of Buddhist Lent during which new monas-
tic robes and requisites are offered to the monastic community.

December/January
» Rakhaing State Day A Saturday in mid-December sees traditional sports such as
wrestling and bamboo pole climbing held in Sittwe.
» Kayin New Year Karen communities throughout Myanmar celebrate by wearing
their traditional dress and by hosting folk-dancing and singing performances. Big
celebrations are held in the Karen suburb of Insein, just north of Yangon, and in
Hpa-an.
» Ananda Festival Held at the Ananda Pahto in Bagan at the full moon.

GOVERNMENT-OWNED TRANSPORT
The government profits from the use of transport services that it owns and/or oper-
ates. Foreigners pay multiples of local fares on the ferry and train. Depending on who
you believe, the extra money goes either straight into the general’s pockets or towards
wages and upkeep of seriously creaky infrastructure. Government-owned transport
includes the following:
» Inland Water Transport (IWT) Foreigners are charged at least five times the local
price.
» Myanma Airways (domestic) Not recommended, as much for its safety record as
its ownership.
» Myanma Five Star Line (MFSL; ships) Finding accurate schedules is so difficult
that few travellers bother.
» Myanmar Railways Foreigners are charged 10 times the local fare.
