PROGRESS REPORT

ENERGY AUDIT OF WATER PUMPING STATION, DEHRADUN.

The Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan is situated in Water Works Campus, Rajpur Road, Dehradun.
The Jal Sanstha was built in the year 1937. It provides water to the city of Dehradun. The Jal
Sansthan has 2 transformers which provide electricity to operate the pumping of water. The
water is pumped by 5 Centrifugal Pumps. The motors used in the pumps are Squirrel Cage
Induction Motor. The motor uses starters and they are Star-Delta starter and Auto-
Transformer starter.

Scope of the project: The scope of work includes carrying out Energy Audit to identify
opportunities of saving electrical energy in various electrical and mechanical equipments and
utilities. Give recommendation for the opportunities identified with techno economic
feasibility with investment required with payback period.

The following are the important components in Jal Sanstha:

1. Two Distribution Transformers.

2. Five Centrifugal Pumps.

3. Filter House.

4. Over Head and Underground Tank.

5. Rain Water Harvesting Tank.

6. D.G. Set.

Based on my observations and the support of auditing instruments the following were the
problems found out at Jal Sanstha,

1. Low Power Factor: Inductive loads such as transformers and pumps reduce the current
carrying capacity of wirings and equipment life. This was seen in the rainy season when the
power factor came down too as low as 0.84. This was because of pumps operating for longer
times. This can be solved by using capacitors of rating of 0.95, which is shown in the thesis
report.
2. Improper Maintenance of the Pumping System:

The centrifugal pumps and the pumping system at Jal Sanstha are not properly maintained.

The following are the values as shown by the tachometer:

Pump1 - 1420 RPM ( Designed Value 1460 )

Pump2 - 1450 RPM ( Designed Value 1480 )

Pump3 - 1440 RPM ( Designed Value 1470 )

Pump4 - 1445 RPM ( Designed Value 1470 )

Pump5 - 1460 RPM ( Designed Value 1470 )

Energy Conservation Measures:

Daily checks: An hourly record of the delivery pressure and power input to the pump should
be maintained Noise and vibrations are the first sign of impending troubles like bearing
failure, choking of impeller or casing and such other operating troubles.

Periodical checks: The lubrication of mechanical seals should be checked. The lubricant
might get contaminated with foreign material or get blackened due to overheating. In such
cases, oil chamber should be flushed and filled with fresh oil.

3. Use of Variable Speed Drive: As the voltage level is fluctuating at Jal Sanstha use of a
Variable Speed Drive will reduce the power consumption needed for the motors. The
Variable Speed Drive basic principle of operation is to convert the electrical system
frequency and voltage to the frequency and voltage required to drive a motor at a speed other
than its rated speed.

4. Energy consuming Lights and Fans: Due to improper design and low maintenance the
lights and fans consume huge amounts of power. This can be improved by using CFL, T-5
Lamps and Energy Efficient fans, which has been shown in the thesis report.

The draft version of the thesis ENERGY AUDIT OF WATER PUMPING STATION,
DEHRADUN will be submitted on 26th April, 2010.
