How do you work
towards making
‘Vision Zero’ a reality?
1. Infusing Innovation
Leadership must realise that traditional approach alone is not the
solution to our OHS problems. It is important that leadership adopt
new and innovative approaches to tackle problems. They must
ensure that these are infused into the organisation.

Safety can be considered as a focus area for process innovation

within the organisation.
2. Connecting…
New ideas will not be successful unless every employee is taken on
board. This will require adequate awareness, communication and
trust building exercise. Leadership has to convince the rank and file
that they are serious and committed about it. In many instances, fault
lines are detected here.
A feedback-rich environment enhances both communication and
motivation. Positive feedback can act as a consequence that increases
safe behaviour (reinforcement). A safety perception survey may help
an organisation to know the ground reality.
3. Resource Matters
The study shows that there are problems with hierarchy of control.
Most of the time, the apex level of controls like engineering control
or process change needs significant initial investment. In absence of
that, the tendency moves towards the last levels of controls like PPE
and administrative controls; and they are really not very reliable. This
area needs further attention.
Here, good practices include allocation of adequate resources for
safety, may be through a well established budgeting process
considering capital and operational expenses.
4. Managing The Supply Chain Effectively
Supply chain is an important area for improvement. Supply chain
partners present a typical problem. Parent companies have not
much management control over the supply chain members; yet their
contribution towards OHS incidents could be enormous. Leadership
has to find out ways and means to influence the supply chain
members to successfully manage the outcome.
Supply chain safety programmes linked to business benefits always
achieve more success than compliance based approach.
5. Team It Up With Customised Training
Organisations are generally conducting conventional safety
trainings, however, effectiveness is the area of concern.

Customised capacity development programmes shall enhance

safety competence. Knowledge, awareness and behavioural
performances – all of them are to be considered as success
factors.

6. Learning & Growing
Learning from the past events is another weak area revealed by the
study. The organisations that do not learn from their past mistakes
cannot grow. The organisations that keep learning from past mistakes
and are able to internalise the lessons learnt are bound to be the
winners.
A well established incident investigation system based on a robust
model is highly recommended to achieve success in this area.
Communications and adoption of issues arising out of unit’s boundary
is also an important source of learning.
7. Influencing The Behaviour Through BBS
Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) is another weak area. Leadership
can influence behaviour which when directed properly develops
into a safe working culture in the organisation. However, it is
important to prepare the employees in Behaviour Based Safety
(BBS) and educate them in this area.
The adoption of Behaviour

the leadership team. The BBS
programme should also consider
the local culture and societal
issues to become sustainable.
8. Ensuring Contractors Safety
Contractor’s safety management is another area requiring attention.
Most of the hazardous activities in any industry are typically off
loaded to contractors. We can never achieve Vision Zero unless we
can take our contractors on board.

9. Is Safety In Your Priority List?
Health and work area monitoring deserve a lot more attention. It is
known that many fatalities in industry occur due to occupational
health alone. This area did not get its due importance perhaps due to
the fact that accidents are instantly visible whereas occupational
diseases take years to show up.
Successfully managed Occupational Health (OH) system may include
use of more competent resources (OH Specialists), Occupational
Health Survey, health database management and creation of more
awareness within the employees.
10. Embracing Technology In
The Safety Excellence Journey
Finally, leadership in use of technology has to be considered as
need of the hour to eliminate, minimise and manage hazards. Use
of smart systems and data analytics can be used as a predictive tool
for OHS risk management. This will make the system more
predictable and reliable.
