STAGE 2 PLANNING APPLICATION

The St Thomas Street East draft development framework brings together

the four major landowners on this part of street – CIT Group, Greystar,
Columbia Threadneedle and Sellar. The draft development framework
started with the landowners’ shared vision for the ground floor level and
landscape – ensuring a common approach to the look and feel. Just as
important we are developing a joint plan for social and economic
regeneration. This sets out our ideas for culture and life in the area. These
are joint commitments to create a place for culture, jobs and opportunity,
bring people together and local health and wellbeing. It builds on the
work done by the local community, Southwark Council, Team London
Bridge amongst others to improve and celebrate the London Bridge area.

The starting point for the design of Vinegar Yard is Old London Bridge.
Built by King Henry II in 1209, it stood 30m upstream of the bridge today.
Crowded with houses and shops it was a centre for commerce. Until
Putney Bridge opened in 1729 it was the only road-crossing downstream
of Kingston. It connected communities and its shrine to St Thomas
Becket was the starting point for pilgrimage. In the same way, Vinegar
Yard will connect communities, consolidating the Lowline and knitting
London Bridge Station and the
commercial district to the north into the rich character of Old Bermond-
sey to the south.

KPF’s designs take their visual cues from the vertical bundles of buildings
and rooflines that sat atop Old London Bridge. The ground floor takes its
rhythm and proportions from the adjacent Victorian rail arches running
down St Thomas Street. Whilst the warehouses that are characteristic of
Old Bermondsey are also reflected in thedesign of a new pavilion
building.

Clark International Airport, is a 8 million passenger per annum terminal,
inspired by the Phillippinies architectural heritage and has a responsive design
for challenging weather conditions. The terminal has a semi circular plan,
increasing departure lounge areas per airplane. The main semi circle is divided
with light belts, which emphasizes three main divisions of the terminal: the
processor, airside concession areas and the pier. Roof design is inpired by the
Phillipino traditional houses with long canopies. Processor area, which
contains checkin halls and baggage carousels along with other landside
functions, has slight openings for light penetration from the north. Roof is
covered with copper that is a common local material.
Interior of the terminal has large gardens, reflecting tropical climate, especially
on the arrival hall, which creates a welcoming atmoshpere for abroad Phillipino
workers. Local materials are given priority in interiors, obtaining the sense of
tropical climate with a modern twist.

Kuwait International Airport Passenger Terminal 2, is a 13 million passenger

per annum terminal, designed by Foster and Partners in association with Gulf
Consult. The terminal has a trefoil plan, comprising three symmetrical wings of
departure gates. Each façade spans 1.2 kilometres and all extend from a
dramatic 25-metre-high central space. The terminal balances the enclosure of
this vast area with a design that is highly legible at a human scale - for simplic-
ity and ease of use there are few level changes. To further aid orientation, the
building is planned under a single roof canopy, punctuated by glazed
openings that filter daylight, while deflecting direct solar radiation. The canopy
extends to shade a generous entrance plaza and is supported by tapering
concrete columns - their fluid, organic forms draw inspiration from the
contrast between the solidity of the stone and the shape and movement of
Kuwait's traditional dhow sailing boats. Targeting LEED 'gold', it aims to be
the first passenger terminal in the world to attain this level of environmental
accreditation and combines the thermal properties of the concrete structure
with a large expanse of roof-mounted photovoltaic panels to harvest solar
energy. COURTESY OF FOSTER AND PARTNERS

Sishane Park is a bold shift in urban public space in central Istanbul. Located
between the southwestern edge of Beyoglu and the highly trafficked Tarlibasi
Road, its design intends to re-engage residents and visitors into the natural
qualities of the urban environment as an alternative public space for people to
enjoy together in the dense city. The design is in a dialogue with the sweeping
views and flora of the Halic (Golden Horn), but also creates large pubic spaces
for cultural programing and contrasting intimate spaces for resting, enjoying the
shade of trees, playing and passing time with the community. The park bleeds
into the streets of the city, but unlike a conventional park in Istanbul, is defined
by three features: the silhouette walk, the decks and the outdoor room. The
features are framed by a rich landscape for different species unique to the Halic
to delight and comfort peoples. Beyond the three features are unique places
and experiences for people of all ages to discover.

Bomontiada pavilion is a temporary structure designed to enrich the

experience of bomontiada visitors during the construction phase of Bomonti
Bear Factory culture center.
Two main squares are defined in order to engage with the bomontiada and
Babylon entries. Visitors are welcomed with a nourishing square with seating
spaces and greenery. Later on path leads the way to Babylon, where a more
enclosed space feeling is aimed.
Pavilion is designed in a parametric order with using the palettes as the main
unit. Two squares are defined as circular entities, where create paths for
palettes to put onto. It is thought as a stacking structure, which each layer
works in a rotated order, to create a rotational feeling, coincides with the
concept of leading people towards Babylon.
The squares rise with different rules, since in the Babylon square palettes
come towards inside of the circular area to create a enclosed space feeling;
however in the entry square the palettes go off the center to open up the
space for a more inviting area.

SATHANE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS is envisioned as a mix of university
long-term research and advancement of knowledge application to end-users. This
new campus plan in the Üsküdar Rasathane peak unites the ongoing pursuits and
goals of BOSPHORUS UNIVERSITY and Istanbul Greater Municipality’s aspiration to
revitalize the urban cores. The master plan for the 300,000+ m2 campus calls for a
multiple phased full build-out of 30,000 m2 of project based research, laboratories,
learning areas, communication areas, social life, visitor areas, cultural activities and
open space. The plan for BUKK combines an intricate play between urban design,
architecture and complex programmatic requirements of specialized advanced
research and social-life. The designing a new advanced science center hub along
the Bosphorus in Istanbul meant a precise notion for the facilities of a global
research hub that could simultaneously work as a dynamic urban design concept
and become an inspiring architectural expression.

alve0sis: Animat is a timeframe animation on a fabric formed network, which
comprises multidirectional tubular structure, and an interwoven living
matter- mycelium. The installation is erected in the Karaalioglu Park as a part
of the IV. International Architecture Biennial of Antalya. In align with the living
nature of alve0sis, its computational generation process is consisting of a
dynamic procedure, starting from particle information to cellular data, and
eventually the bone structure that hosts mycelium. Alve0sis is an animal
structure, coming out from an evolutionary animation process. The initial
input for this animation derives from the particle data network, which
responds to site and interior forces like shade, air flow and as well the
spatiality and porosity it creates. These evolve to a sequence of forms
arising from the same DNA, to multiple other adaptations. Alve0sis is a
network of points, cells, and tubular structures, coming out from a living
process, and maintains its life with the evolution of the mycelium. This
network has multiscalar qualities, whereas a spatial component can be
repeated in much smaller scales or composes a system of structures in

The open call from the City of Sidney aimed to rethink and understand new
practice for their under-utilized downtown laneways through an annual
multiple small projects commissioning of collectives of architects, artists and
curators.
Together with the visual artist Refik Anadol and curator Pelin Dervis the
installation defined the interaction between the shared physical aspect of the
city and its spaces composition, re-describing a new dialogues between
urban ecologies. The work sampled sound from Beyolu-Karaköy axis
adjacent alley environments and visually animated a composition of the
sound-remix on the geometric EL tensile line situated above and across the
length of laneway. The EL geometry spatially extenuated and invited the eye
to have a heightened awareness of the compression and vertically specific to
Abercrombie Lane.
Sydney’s laneways are transforming from abandoned civil space to vibrant
civic spaces and cultural platforms. Understanding the co-location of spatial
experience of city design gives urban residents and leisure users new
horizons in expression and experiences.

Dome Istanbul is an interior concept for an international technol-

production. Located in an industrial area, once at the outskirts of
Istanbul, and now keeping its industrial character within the
business district, Dome Istanbul creates a duality with its
industrial character and high tech content. It generates a user
based experience with the contribution of agencies, agency
candidates, prospects and individuals.
Parkour concept is based on a non-linear spatial strip that starts
from the entry and goes along the display, meeting, conference
and play zones. Along this strip, which is referred as 'The
Parkour', various program blendings are possible, since it
creates a base structure for the whole space. The Parkour is
made of corten, which gives its industrial identity to space and
sets other elements free in shape and material.

VISUALISATION
The project is located on the main highway of Istanbul, E5, which provides multiplic-
ity of transportation alternatives and also creates various pedestrian and car flows,
entering the site from different sides. Because of its specific position between the
highway, metro and metrobus stations (elements belonging to the urban infrastruc-
ture) and the surrounding residential, commercial and industrial neighborhood, the
project area is a potential and "fertile" passageway for pedestrians and cars,
connecting macro and micro-scales, businesses and residences.
Resulting from the mix-use program of the commission, housing, residence and
commerce are the major elements of this multi-layered program. Considering the
changing users and needs of these three distinctive functions, it is possible to say
that the project area is at the intersection between different groups of people,
requiring different spatial qualities.
In order to solve the challenging and multi-dimensional circulatory problem(s) relied
with fore mentioned external and internal parameters, project refers to a conven-
tional and even "traditional" spatial organization, reminding the Ottoman "kulliye"
layouts. Built with the "purpose of creating interior worlds called 'avlu' (courtyard)",
which have different intrinsic qualities and "specific privacies". While being a
reliable source of inspiration, ‘Kulliye’ defines paths for people and cars in transit
and organizes spaces for different user groups of the housing, residential and
commercial zones.

Kenter House is a four bedroom housing project, located in village of Sogutlu,

Ayvacik, Canakkale. Designed for a lady practicing patchworks, house contains
a small patchwork workshop, a large double storey living room with a kitchen, a
garage and four bedrooms with own bathrooms. Site is relatively elevated from
the rest of the village and has a high slope, which is used as an advantage to
capture the nature view. Property area is divided with straight lines of stone
walls, which creates the zones separately for entry, living area, garden and
workshop. Openings between these stone walls allows the flow between the
spaces. Living area is situated based on the maple tree on west, which gives a
shade and natural atmosphere to the living room.
