0 INTRODUCTION

Hammock is a bed - swings that is made of canvas or rope mesh suspended from two supports by
cords at both ends that is suspended two firm points such as tree. Today they are popular around
the world for relaxation; they are also used as a lightweight bed on camping trips. However, for
this project it is required to propose an idea of a hammock that is available for beach used –
Portable hammock.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

i. To design a safe portable hammock that can be easily carried and stored for transportation.

ii. To carry out column buckling evaluation of the design.

3.0 HAMMOCK DESIGN

Design consideration:

1. It is portable because the links can be breaks down into six pieces that can fit into a boot
with the back seat down which is 1.8 m pipe lengths and packs down flat.

2. It is easy to assembly with just one person since it is moderately easy considered steel
components are heavy.

3. The price range is affordable, price is depending on pipe sizes and considered that the
metal type material is long lasting item.

4. It nicely fits a tarp since this stand is just over 3 m long and fits most hammock tarps.

5. No flex and very sturdy construction because all-steel construction but need to make sure
all fittings are tight.

Material Properties:

In making this portable –hammock, there are two materials to be considered which are metals
and composites. Though composites are a great option given their strength to weight ratio and
durability, in contrast composite materials has low availability as well as high cost. Next,
when considering certain metals for use, there are two types of metals were considered as well
such as aluminum alloys and magnesium alloys. Magnesium is one of the lightest building
materials on the market and has a relatively high strength to weight ratio. With further
research, magnesium proves impractical though. This is because of its expensive in cost as
well as difficulty to obtain. When considering aluminum alloys, they too offer great material
characteristics. Aluminum alloys are easy to come by given their common use in industry.
The type of aluminum chosen was T6 6061 Aluminum pipe. The ‘T6’ referring to the
tempered properties of the aluminum. T6 means that it is on the harder side of most aluminum
piping which makes it good for structural use. Piping was chosen aside from tubing given the
rather large price difference. This material is far more expensive than steel but less expensive
compared to magnesium and has the appropriate characteristics needed. Therefore, the
modulus of elasticity, E is 68.9 GPa and the tensile yield strength is 255 MPa.

4.0 SIMULATION ANALYSIS

The simulation analysis was performed by using Catia V5 under Generative structural
analysis. The value of the Von misses stress used to determine if a given material will yield
or fracture, mostly used for ductile materials, such as metals. If the Von misses stress of a
material under load is equal or greater than the yield limit of the same material under simple
tension then the material will yield. In this analysis the buckling show at the center of the
braces which indicated in red color. The load exerted on the hammock is 500N. Further
analysis will be done in calculation using the buckling method. Buckling is the instability in
columns.
