BACTERIA IN DIESEL TANKS

Hi everyone... ENAP Chile had a corrosion problem in a diesel tank and they think was due to bacterias in the fuel..? Some important is they ingress water in this tank (I don
´t now the real reason)
Chavez, Eliana
Somebody have been any problem similar? We have some analisis to determine amount of bacterias in diesel? Wich are the simptons in this type of contaminations?

Thanks in advance,

Eliana

I am sharing this wit the Fuel Additives network as this more something for them.

One of the indications of bacteria growth in diesel is emulsion formation with water. You can test the drain water for bacteria count.
The diesel can be treated with a biocide to prevent this.

Eliana,
microbial contamination can affect diesel, petrol, ULSD, biodiesel, kero, gasoline and other fuels used in marine, aviation are all susceptible. Similarly there is no single
specific organism that can be identified as being responsible for degradation and spoilage. As a general rule, wherever fuel and water come into contact in a storage or
distribution system microbial contamination is likely to occur.

Ferranti, Sandro Microorganisms can be air or waterborne, so as the water bottom develops a microbial population builds up in it and for many of the species present in the water
bottom, liquid hydrocarbon fuels represent an excellent nutrient source. As a result there is a population explosion: the microorganisms proliferate at the fuel/water
interface, surviving in the water phase whilst feeding on the fuel changing its own phisiology.

Once a microbial population becomes established fuel quality rapidly deteriorates, consequences are fuel haziness, failure to meet specifications, corrosion
(Microbial Induced Corrosion), filter plugging, maleodour and additive degradation, all of these problems are related directly to the presence of microorganisms or their
associated by-products.

Bacteria measuring in water and oil phase can be carried out by AccuCount test kit through a luminometric ATP/AMP reading in order to evaluate the total amount of biomass
in the sample, which translates into the direct threat and the relative proportion of metabolically-dormant to living cells in a given sample, although metabolically-dormant
cells do not pose an immediate microbiological contamination risk, changing process conditions can cause them to become metabolically active without warning as an
indication of the indirect threat

Eliana,

Run ATP on the water drains off of the tanks. WE have a solid biocide product we call biosticks that can be easily applied for long term bio control, EC5113A that is very
effective.
