Where did we go wrong?? We went from
being in love to hating each other!! You
have taken so many of our friends and
family away in so little time. Why?? Is it
because, you like to see us in pain?? Is
because, you love to see silent cries of a
mother burying her child??!! Is it be-
cause' you are secretly washing away our
black community? I see jealousy erasing
all of young lives. It’s sad that when I was name on it. It’s crazy we have got to do
growing up the saying " life is too short"
basically meant you can get a disease like
cancer and die at the age of sixty. Now we
are really living in the saying meaning we
as Charleston natives are not passing
away but being murdered fresh out of
high school. I don't know about you but
when I decide to have kids Mr. Charles-
ton I'm not raising them to be a part of
your slaughter house. What do you want
from us?? No matter how good we raise
our kids you take them away. The streets
are a jungle!! Survival of the strongest!!
It’s sad to say we put the streets as a plat- in making money!! What good are you to
form for the ones who pave the way of
better living. You make it so hard for us
to do better when you judge us by ap-
pearance and paper work. What’s wrong
with dreads? In Jamaica how long a man
dreads are and shells in his hair
measures how strong of a worker he
is. So why do you try to twist our ways
and make us ashamed of ourselves.

pumping into our minds now. Why is
black history the shortest month of the
year? Why is the government trying to
change the history books saying slaves
where just unpaid workers. It’s time to
wake up from this nightmare. How far
will you go to make a change? How many
more times will we see Rip/Sip to some-
body on social media? Don't you under-
stand the more kids that drop out of
school the more jails are being built!!
Charleston you have seriously let us
down. We can't go anywhere without a
fight or a shooting when all we want to do
is have fun. Ughhhhh and don't even get
me started on the people you took away
from us that where innocent. My mother
would always say a bullet don't have no
better. Don't just say what you want to do
to make Charleston a better place does it!
Dare to dream bigger for our lost loves
ones because they can no longer dream
for us. Who are you to take lives as if you
are God? There is no coming back after
death. You just took somebody's mom,
dad, sister, brother etc. How would you
feel if someone decided to kill someone
you love?? The sad part is some of you
are proud to say we are so dangerous!!
Not dangerous but foolish all that ani-
mosity built up could have been invested
this world promote unity not stupidity!!
Our people are in danger. All these mur-
ders going on are silent assignations.

Everyone has heard about how bad the
food we eat is lately. We are now hear-
ing about a lot of ailments and diseas-
es attributed to this fact. With the rise
of obesity, heart disease, diabetes
among other things. Until now we had
no clue that our foods are being genet-
ically modified (GMO). Which means
these foods DNA has been changed to
resist certain chemicals and pest.
Along with preservatives, artificial
sweeteners, and petrol dyes. Nothing
that we eat on a regular basis serve us
any benefit.
With foods being processed it has tak-
en away the wholesome value of it.
Bleached flour, pasteurized milk and
juices all take away the natural vita-
mins stored naturally in those foods.
Vitamin deficiency is the leading cause
of a lot ailments that could otherwise
be avoided.
Eating whole organic fruits and vege-
tables is a good way to get back some

of what nature intended. Our parents
are said to be in better health than us
because of this fact. Especially in the
GeeChee area. A lot of us can recall our
grandmother planting most of their
whole foods. Which is what our par-
ents had eaten all their lives. Very little
processed foods or microwave dinners
like we have been eating the past
25yrs.This also has a lot to do with the
rise of veganism, look at Jay and Be-
yoncé. You don't have to be a vegetari-
an though to be on a healthy diet. Just
start paying attention to the label.
Even if it's not a rap label, check for
what your putting in your body. Eat as
whole as you can. We say it can be
expensive but you pay a lot to look
good on the outside. So do the same on
the inside so you can stunt... I mean
live a little longer.

What made you start the "Man in the
Mirror” Project?
1. "Man in the Mirror" was inspired by
one of the people who lived with me
when I was a kid. He got into some trou-
ble after leaving my home and when he
wrote me to thank me for all I had done
for him in the past, I told him to come
see me. When he came home; to make a
long story short during our conversation
I asked him where he saw himself 5
years in the future. He said he had no
future, I said at 22 years old, no one
should ever feel like they have no future.
So I decided to do something about it.
Now we know "Man in the Mirror" by
Michael Jackson. Is there any relation
between the two?
2. Yes, I took that name because that
song represents everything we're trying
to do. Everyone has to learn the change
must begin with you!
Are there any requirements to
volunteer for the events?
3. No not really as far as this event is
concerned we welcome volunteers from
all over. The only thing that prevents
you from being a volunteer is if you’re a
register sex offender, but that goes with
out saying.
How would you describe your project?

4. It is a community outreach project.
We want to deal with the issues before
we lose any more of our young people.
While the kickoff is the summit. We do
have plans in place to follow this event.
How do you believe your work will help
others?
5. My goal is to reach as many people as
we can and to help them understand
their not alone. I don't believe in making
excuses for our actions so of course that
means learning to take responsibly for
your actions. After learning to do that
we have programs set up that will help
them make their change. We hope to
reach them, with understanding and
guidance to help them reach their goals.
We understand that the "Man in the
Mirror Project" was established here in
South Carolina, do you plan on traveling
to other states?
6. I didn't plan to, but I have been ap-
proached to help start up similar pro-
grams in areas like Jacksonville and
Atlanta. I have had the pleasure of work
with people from all over the U.S. in
forming the program. So to answer your
question, time will tell.
Do you have any up and coming events
that we can support?

7. Our "Taking Back Our Youth" a youth
summit is our event coming up. We can
use all the help you can get. To be hon-
est, what we need most is money to help
fund the event. All proceeds goes to the
"Man In The Mirror" SC. I just want
people to know we are trying to make a
change for our young people. Let's give
them a real chance and let them know
they are a priority to us. Let them know,
we will not leave them to the govern-
ment to take care of.
How do you keep each member involved
and motivated?
8. I think I'm the hardest person to keep

Using his lyrical dexterity to convey a
poignant message, hip-hop heavyweight
Omar Offendum, born in Saudi Arabia to
Syrian parents, is a force to be reckoned
with. Raised in Washington, D.C., the 32
year old embraces a politically influenced
style, an approach that resonates strongly
with Arab youths, many who actively em-
brace one of the most expressive forms of
music around: rap.
“#Jan25,” a track that quickly went viral,
saw Omar focus on Cairo’s Tahrir Square
uprising, and 2010's solo effort,
“SyrianamericanA,” was a rousing affair
that clearly displayed the rapper’s fond-
ness for his parents’ homeland. A compel-
ling combination of noir-laden '90s rap
beats complimented by Islamic poetry,
Omar’s debut received critical acclaim.
The Syrian war is deeply intricate, much
more complicated than a somewhat falla-
cious belief involving brave rebels fighting
the immoral dictatorial regime. With just
over 22 million citizens, Syria borders
Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon.
Steeped in history that dates back to bibli-
cal times, the war-torn country has an
abundance of deserts and fertile land.
Here, people are irritated by their govern-
ment, the Assad regime, disillusioned by a
sheer lack of economic and political refor-
mation.
As Omar alludes to in his music, the cata-
lyst for the unforeseen carnage was the
2011's jailing of some youths who dis-
played anti-regime graffiti. While incarcer-
ated, some of these children were killed,
thus leading to public protests which
spread like wildfire. The anger was further
fuelled by the failure of the government to
reprimand the perpetrators. In April of the
same year, one month after the graffiti
incident, the Syrian Army shot innocent
demonstrators, an incident that turned
protests into a full-scale armed revolution.
Omar’s pro-revolution position has gener-
ated positive feedback, especially with the
group of activists inside Syria who placed
the rapper’s face on stamps commemorat-
ing the rising.
In these tumultuous times, rap remains an
outlet for underdogs-turned-lyrical-
connoisseurs to convert feelings of es-

trangement into inventive purpose. The
Arab gravitation toward hip-hop culture is
one that wants to remove stereotypical
associations, one that wishes to convey the
complexity of Arab identity. Omar does
this in a cerebral manner; he is a promi-
nent contributor to an ever expanding
genre. Through his scholastic approach,
Omar regularly discusses the significant
gulf that exists between East and West.
Along with conveying his search for Arab
identity in the post-9/11 world, Omar dis-
cusses the persecution he has faced in the
US. A clearly intelligent individual, Offen-
dum realizes and appreciates that hip-hop
and academia are closely linked, both of
which focus on generational mêlées.
Syrian citizens are experiencing hardships
like never before, with many genuine free-
dom fighters now joined by individuals
with their own Islamist agendas. In partic-
ular, the situation in Latakia province is
critical, with villagers being massacred for
sectarian reasons.
Omar is all too aware of this, offering the
listener intelligent music that is stripped
of any bravado. With that being said, the
rapper doesn’t sacrifice the thumping,
Beastie Boys influenced beats that reflect
heavily on his musical education. His track
"#Syria," an outraged retort to Syrian
President Bashar Assad, is one that focus-
es on defenceless citizens' who have been
met with a barrage of bullets, intimidation
and far more ominous atrocities carried
out by pro-Assad forces.
Offendum's proficient mike skills and lib-
eral approach reflect heavily on a man that
maintains a dynamic social media pres-
ence, regularly detailing his travels across
Europe and the Middle East. Offendum's
style reflects his vantage point between the
worlds of East and West, one that is rooted
in Syrian and Arabic characteristics while
also swayed by an American philosophy.
Millions of refugees have now fled Syria,
with many crossing the border into Leba-
non, a country whose population of just
over 4 million is now engorged by a flood
of 2 million Palestinian and Syrian refu-
gees.
As the war in Syria shows no sign of abat-
ing neither does Omar’s desire to highlight
the atrocities in the most creative way im-
aginable.

 In 2014 everyone’s a rapper, but to be a true artist you have to be more than just some
everyday rapper. To be successful in this game called “Hip Hop” you have to be Raw,
Uncensored, Real, and most importantly you have to be Gully. So I sat down personally
with one of the hottest up and coming artist in Charleston, West Ashley’s own Gully
Murk. Mr. Murk, a man of few words, gives an in depth interview on what it takes to not
only survive in this industry but how to run it.

Tika: So Mr. Murk lets jump right in, how
are you today?
Tika: (slightly giggling) So what's up with
the name? What’s the origin of the name
Gully Murk?
Gully Murk: Well its a name I got from
the streets, I go hard and I murk every-
thing I do so Gully Murk is the name I was
given.
Tika: Ok so you said the name was given
to you from the "Streets" were exactly are
you from?
Gully Murk: I grew up in West Ashley, SC.
Tika: So the West is your stomping
ground?
Gully Murk: Something like that (laughing
innocently) Tika: So pretty much anybody who is in-
terested in working with you?
Tika: How do you think your music im-
pacts the community you are from? Gully: Yep
Gully: I rap about what I know. Every-
thing I rap about I’ve done, I really live
this.
Tika: (nodding) Ok, so what inspired you
to do music?
Gully Murk: Well I’ve always been into
music, all my life, so why not make money
from it.

smile) No I’m not single and yes I do have
children. I don't have any biological chil-
dren but I do have step children.
Tika: That's great! Congrats to you also as
a father.
Tika: (smiling) Well Mr. Murk I think we
have learned a great bit about you to-
day. Is it anything you would like for the
readers to know before we go?
Gully: Yea, Yea I would like to say that
what I speak about in my music is really
my life. A lot of artist rap about what they
don't do. I’m not a studio rapper in any
way, shape, form, or fashion.
