EXAMINATION Nov-Dec 2018

A703: Advanced Structure Design

TIME-THREE HOURS MAXIMUM MARKS-50

NOTE- Attempt any five questions. All questions carry equal marks. Missing data (if any) may be suitably
assumed. Draw neat sketches wherever required.

1. Distinguish between flat slabs and flat plates with sketches of both. What are the advantages offered by
flat plates over conventional two way slabs with supporting beams? In what way is the EFM better than
the DDM?
2. An exterior panel of a flat slab of size 5m X 5m is subjected to a live load of 6.0 KN/m2. Using Direct Design
Method find design moments at salient points. Take size of column as 500mm X 500mm and storey height as 3.5
m. Exposure conditions are mild. Also sketch the reinforcement details.

3. Design a square footing to support a 350 mm square column. The column carries a dead load of 450 KN
and a live load of 380 kN. The allowable soil pressure is 150 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel
for the footing. Sketch the details of reinforcement.
4. How is the Steel reinforcement distributed in the case of (a) one way reinforced footing (b) two way
square footing (c) two way rectangular footing? What are the situations in which combined footings are
preferred over isolated footings?
5. What are the basic assumptions of Portal Method? Analyse the given frame in fig 1 by Portal Method.

6. What are the basic assumptions of Cantilever Method? Analyse the given frame in fig 1 by Cantilever
Method.
7. Write down the advantages of PSC over RCC. A beam is prestressed by a cable carrying an initial
prestress of 450N/mm2. Calculate the loss of prestress due to shrinkage of concrete when beam is: (i)
Pre- tensioned (ii) Post tensioned. Age of concrete at transfer is 7 days.
8. What is prestressed concrete? Explain its types. What are the different losses occurs in the prestress
concrete. Explain in detail.
9. Explain behavior of shell roof and folded plate roofs Draw neat sketches.
10. Write about the considerations taken while designing earthquake resistant structures. What are the major
challenges in construction in coastal areas?
