Water Deficit
The volcanic lakes of Bali's
precious water supplies are
suffering degradation. These
lakes contribute to a network of
“ 1,300 rivers and streams that
provide most the Island's water
supply.
As reported by Balipost.com,
among the four major lakes of
Bali, the most severely polluted
lake is Danau Buyan in Bali's
mountain-lake district. The head
of the Bali-Penida Lakes and
Waterways Department, I Keteut
Jayada, said on Thursday,
November 1, 2018: “This is the
result the change of land usage
in the Baturiti area. In the past,
the land was used for coffee
cultivation but is now used for
villas. This change of usage has
resulted in sedimentation of the
lake's bottom. The depth of the
lake has become shallow
meaning the volume of water
held by the lake is less.”
Jayada said the potential air
production from lakes and rivers
in Bali is 239 cubic meter per
second per year. Meanwhile, the
need for air in Bali stands at 103
cubic meters per
second per year.
Explaining further,
Jayada said while the
figures suggest a
surplus, these figures
do not reflect Bali true
water supply
situation. Of the 391
rivers in Bali, only 162
flow during the entire
calendar year. The
remaining number of
rivers only carry water
for a part of the year

in Bali is used for irrigation. Water
taken from rivers and streams by
the traditional subak system of
irrigation has become one of the
impediments to Bali's meeting its
water requirements.
In the Sarbagita Region
(Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar,
and Tabanan) a water deficit of 5
cubic meters per second already
exists. “Sarbagita represents a
concern because the service of
the State Water Board (PDAM),
especially in Denpasar, is very
low at 48 percent. “This means
that 62% of the residents of
Denpasar are not adequately
served by PDAM. This has not
caused the (expected) outcry
because almost every house has
an alternative supply of water of a
reasonable quality,” said Jayada.
At the same time, Jayada warns,
however, that the heavy reliance
on well water is dangerous.
Areas such as Nusa Dua, Kuta
and Sanur are already listed as
“red zones” due to the heavy
intrusion of seawater into the
water table. The intrusion of
seawater is the result of the over
exploitation of ground water.
Moreover, the over-use of
subterranean water sources
brings the frightening prospect of

land subsidence and sink holes
that can swallow up homes and
businesses.
Authorities are working to create
new reservoirs for fresh water.
This is being achieve by
outlawing the drilling of water
wells and the creation of dams.
“We need to create dams. Our
rivers and streams are small.
When there is heavy rain and
flooding water quickly runs off
into the oceans. By making
reservoirs, we can contain rain
water for later use,” said Jayada.
Jayada said reservoirs are being
constructed in Sidan (Belok
Sidan, Bandung) and Tambland
(Sawan, Buleleng). The Sidan
dam is being developed in
anticipation of the water
requirements for a new airport at
Kubutambahan.
The new reservoir at Sidan will
be unable to meet the current
water deficit of 5 cubic meters per
second in Sarbagita, with the
Sidan reservoir projected to
produce only 1.7 cubic meters
per second.
Jayada said additional
reservoirs, capable of producing
10 cubic meters per second, are
needed to alleviate Sarbagita's
current water deficit.

Why 13 Minutes Pumping Iron Might Be Better Than
Spending Forever at the Gym
For decades, many
endurance athletes like
cyclists have avoided lifting
weights for fear of gaining
unwanted muscle mass that
would weigh them down
rather than speed them up.
Now, new research shows that not
only can the right kind of resistance
training put more power in your
pedals, but also you can start gaining
strength in less time than it takes to set
up a pair of tubeless tires just 13
minutes a session, according to the
study in Medicine & Science in Sports
& Exercise.
In the study, researchers at CUNY
Lehman College in the Bronx and
other institutions set out to determine
the impact various set and repetition
combinations would have on muscle
strength, endurance, and
hypertrophy, or how big their muscles
grew.
After taking baseline measurements,
the researchers divided 34
resistance-trained men into three

exercise routine, which included 8 to
12 reps of seven upper and lower
body exercises. One group performed
five sets of each exercise, with about
90 seconds of rest between sets a
high volume approach that had them
in the gym for over an hour. The
second, medium-volume group
performed three sets of each
exercise, which took about 40 minutes
to complete. Finally, a low-volume
group performed just one set of each
exercise, getting them in and out of
the gym in just 13 minutes.
Each group performed their assigned
workout three times per week for eight
weeks. At the end of the study, all
three groups got stronger and
improved their muscular endurance.
Surprisingly, there were no significant
difference among the groups in
strength and endurance gains: The
quick-hit lifters enjoyed the same
improvements as those who were in
the gym five times as long.

experienced some increase in muscle
size, those lifting higher volumes saw
the most significant gains. In short, the
more sets the men lifted, the bigger
their muscles got. But again, the
burlier men weren't stronger, just

That's good news for endurance
athletes who benefit from increased
strength, but can pay a weight penalty
for too much mass. The factor that
matters most is lifting to failure
pushing hard enough that you truly
can't eek out another rep. If you do
that, one set is all you need to reap the
rewards of strength training, without
sweating unwanted gains in size.

underrated cut of meat, Puck
explains to The Independent.
“Ribeye is pretty popular,” says

often overlooked - is the Ribeye
cap. If you can get that, you should

How gambling distorts reality and hooks your brain
To call gambling a "game of
chance" evokes fun, random
luck and a sense of collective
engagement.
These playful connotations may
be part of why almost 80 percent of
American adults gamble at some
point in their lifetime. When I ask
my psychology students why they
think people gamble, the most
frequent suggestions are for
pleasure, money or the thrill.
While these might be
reasons why people
g a m b l e i n i t i a l l y,
psychologists don't
definitely know why,
for some, gambling
stops being an
enjoyable diversion
and becomes
compulsive. What
keeps people playing
even when it stops
being fun? Why stick
with games people
know are designed for
them to lose? Are
some people just more unlucky
than the rest of us, or simply worse
at calculating the odds?
As an addiction researcher for the
past 15 years, I look to the brain to
understand the hooks that make
gambling so compelling. I've found
that many are intentionally hidden
in how the games are designed.
And these hooks work on casual
casino-goers just as well as they
do on problem gamblers.
Uncertainty as its own reward in
the brain
One of the hallmarks of gambling
is its uncertainty whether it's the
size of a jackpot or the probability
of winning at all. And reward
uncertainty plays a crucial role in
gambling's attraction.
Dopamine, the neurotransmitter
the brain releases during
enjoyable activities such as
eating, sex and drugs, is also
released during situations where
the reward is uncertain. In fact
dopamine release increases
particularly during the moments
leading up to a potential reward.

This anticipation effect might
explain why dopamine release
parallels an individual's levels of
gambling "high" and the severity of
his or her gambling addiction. It
likely also plays a role in
reinforcing the risk-taking
behaviour seen in gambling.
Studies have shown that the
release of dopamine during
gambling occurs in brain areas
similar to those activated by taking
drugs of abuse. In fact, similar to
drugs, repeated exposure to
gambling and uncertainty
produces lasting changes in the
human brain. These reward
pathways, similar to those seen in
individuals suffering from drug
addiction, become hypersensitive.
Animal studies suggest that these
brain changes due to uncertainty
can even enhance gamblers'
cravings and desire for addictive
drugs.
Repeated exposure to gambling
and uncertainty can even change
how you respond to losing.
Counter intuitively, in individuals
with a gambling problem, losing
money comes to trigger the
rewarding release of dopamine
almost to the same degree that
winning does. As a result, in
problem gamblers, losing sets off
the urge to keep playing, rather
than the disappointment that might
prompt you to walk away, a
phenomenon known as chasing
losses.
Lights and sounds egg you on
But gambling is more than just

winning and losing. It can be a
whole immersive environment
with an array of flashing lights and
sounds. This is particularly true in
a busy casino, but even a game or
gambling app on a Smartphone
includes plenty of audio and visual
frills to capture your attention.
But are they just frills? Studies
suggest that these lights and
sounds become more attractive
and capable of triggering urges to
play when they are paired with
reward uncertainty. In
p a r t i c u l a r, w i n -
associated cues –
such as jingles that
vary in length and size
as a function of
jackpot size – both
increase excitement
and lead gamblers to
overestimate how
often they are winning.
Crucially, they can
also keep you
gambling longer and
encourage you to play
faster.
Feeling like a winner while
you're losing
Since games of chance are set up
so the house always has an
advantage, a gambler wins
infrequently at best. You might
only rarely experience the lights
and sounds that come along with
hitting a true jackpot. However, the
gaming industry may have
devised a way to overcome that
issue.
Over the last few decades,
casinos and game manufacturers
significantly upgraded slot
machines, retiring the old
mechanical arms and reels in
favour of electronic versions
known as electronic gaming
machines. These new
computerized games and online
slots come with more attractive
colourful lights and a variety of
sounds. They also possess more
reels, ushering in a new era of
multi-line video slot machines.

Having multiple lines enables players to place a bunch
of bets per spin, often up to 20 or more. Although each
individual bet can be small, many players place the

The rise of electronic gambling machines also means
that rather than being constrained by the physical
arrangement of different possible outcomes on each

When you engage in recreational gambling, you
are not simply playing against the odds, but also
battling an enemy trained in the art of deceit and
subterfuge. Games of chance have a vested
interest in hooking players for longer and letting
them eventually walk away with the impression
they did better than chance, fostering a false
impression of skill.
For many people, these carefully designed
outcomes enhance the satisfaction they get from
gambling. It may remain easy for them to simply
walk away when the chips run out.
But gambling isn't only a light-hearted promise of
a good time and a possible jackpot. Up to 2
percent of the U.S. population are problem
gamblers, suffering from what's recently been
reclassified as gambling disorder.
It stands out as one of the few addictions that
doesn't involve consumption of a substance,
such as a drug. Like other forms of addiction,
gambling disorder is a solitary and isolating
experience. It's tied to growing anxiety, and
problem gamblers are at greater risk of suicide.

Woman drinks nothing but Pepsi since 1954
A great-gran has
declared she wouldn't
drink water even if she
were dying... she'd stick
to her favourite Pepsi like
she has done for 64
years.
Jackie Page, 77, has had
nothing else to drink but four
cans of the fizzy pop a day since
her first taste aged 13 in 1954.
And she insists she has always
been slim, fit and healthy
despite consuming the
equivalent of three million sugar
cubes.
“I don't call it an addiction. It's
just something I like and I can't
help it if I don't like anything
else,” says the retired
housekeeper and mum of four.
“Some people might think it's
weird and that nowadays you
shouldn't drink Pepsi. But I don't
care and I won't settle for
anything else. I wouldn't drink
water no way. Not even if I was
dying. And I won't drink tea or
coffee.”

The craving that has led her to

a cost £65,800 began as a
teenager. Up to then her mother
had a nightmare getting her to
drink anything.
“I didn't like milk or water. My
mum used to say 'you have to
drink something'. I know she
used to give me lemonade or
cherryade,” says Jackie, now a
carer.
“I wouldn't drink to enjoy it. Until
I tasted Pepsi, drinking was just
something I put up with.”
She reveals the only
interruption to her Pepsi
passion came when she was in
hospital giving birth to her four
children in the Sixties because it
was banned from the maternity
ward. “They wouldn't let me
have it in with me so I had to go
without,” says Jackie.
“But I've been to hospital since
for some major operations and I
was allowed to have it there.
“Much to their disgust, the staff

even allowed me to keep my
Pepsi in the kitchen fridge
because I wouldn't drink
anything else. My kids used to
come up to visit me in hospital
with supplies of it so that I
stayed hydrated.”
Now even her 11 grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren
are under strict instructions not
to drink her stash when they
visit her at her home in
Carshalton, Surrey.
Jackie who once had a dog
called Pepsi and admits to
hating rival brand Coca-Cola
says: “I have a cold one as soon
as I wake up each day straight
from the fridge.
“It's like when someone says
they want to drink a lovely cup of
tea first thing in the morning. I
drink up a lovely can of Pepsi
instead.
“I even have it when we're
eating out as I don't like alcohol
either. If the restaurant doesn't
have it I just pull a can from my
bag. Sometimes they get a bit
funny about it. But I just know
what I like and that's Pepsi.”

keto and Paleo bring with
them lots of quirky food
trends, like fat bombs, carb

about the latter.) Some catch
on and some don't, but one

staying power is butter
coffee.
Touted for improving energy,
focus, and satiety, java mixed
with a big dollop of fat has
caught on on in the mainstream
food world, fast. Over the past
few years, it's appeared on
menus at tons of coffee shops
