Summary

The Tanon Strait lies between the Philippine islands of Negros and Cebus. It is a resting ground
for whales, dolphins and home to rare marine plants. It has been a marine wildlife reserve for
almost 20 years and it is 160 kilometers long. As biodiversity comes under threat, locals are
getting involved in its protection. The conservation of this Tanon Street is very complicated.
Some local fisherman are not giving the commitment towards government to protect the marine
life. One of the oyster fisherman said that he needs the clear water to find the oyster because this
is his job to feed their family. As he said that, he know the importance of clear sea ecosystem to
give a quality marine life and for livelihood. He also ensure that the coral are not harmed and
destroyed.

For the marine life, about 14 type of Cetacean have been spotted here and a lot of of money
needed to protect them. This dolphin are very sensitive with sound and some boat activity on the
sea may harm the dolphins. There is one organization which is BIOFIN Philippines are
collaborating with government on how to raise the funds protect the biodiversity and ecosystem
of the strait. They looked for the budget and try their best to work it. For example, some local
fisherman practice the illegal fishing using dynamite and it destroy habitats and for the effort of
conservation government put ranger to secure the coast with only three boats. The ranger work at
their best to consevere the marine life like they have een grocing coral and replanting them in the
degraded area.

Wildlife conservation Philippines are very hard because many inhabitants make their living from
fishing. At the Tanon Strait, people excited to see the dolphin but government put a guidline for
that activity and they get citics it does not go far. This is because the coastal have 40 different
district and 30 administration’s over 400 people sit on the wildlife reserve management board.
So the organization and the government want to make one vision that they can work to protect
Tanon Strait.

A few kilometers away, seaweed are grown for sale. The farmers us for preservative when it is
dried. But the farmers said this year the growth of seaweed is decreased because of rise of
temperature and the climate change. One of the farmer said that before this she can get 1000 kilo
for 1000 fishing line but now she can get half from the previous amount of seaweed. In order to
prevent the illegal fishing and unsustainable farming, government give some programme such as
seaweed farming. They invented the garnered praise from bio fence seaweed farms that
environmentally friendly.

The other attraction of this strait is the dolphin. Government also look for the best way to protect
the species along with the tourism attraction. However, organizing dolphins tour would not
harass but to protect this endangered species is difficult without additional funding. The
conservation of marine wildlife does not only give aesthetic value but for the future good
environment and natural legacy.
