At the Pacific coast village of Playa Zipolite, a big surfing hangout, I
went swimming as pelicans hunted around me. Here I tried a traditional

Next stop, Palenque, an ancient Mayan city, where I stayed deep in the

My final week was spent near Tulum in a beach hut overlooking the

ECO CLEANER
Mark Phillips named his home-cleaning service
after the ancient Greek mother-earth goddess,
Gaia. Mark said: “I started Gaia Home Services
after leaving careers in interior design and
fashion. I decided to do something I believed in
and enjoyed. I am keen on ecological issues and
know only too well the effect that household
chemicals have on both the environment and on
people. I have set up a cleaning and home
service with the environment firmly in mind.
Many friends and family members have allergies, asthma and skin
conditions. I personally know of the advantages of using eco-friendly
products on their general health and wellbeing.”
All products Mark uses are 100 per cent biodegradable. He is
expanding the business into other areas including domiciliary support.
Mark said, “After being recommended by a couple of medical facilities for
the cleaning services I perform, I realised I could offer a varied range of
practical, positive and personal support to people who need a little extra
help with everyday life with things that may have become difficult due to
illness or age – things the rest of us take for granted.”
He offers landlords check-ins and outs as well as preparing properties
for new tenants. He also provides experienced handypersons for minor
jobs, indoors and out. Soon he will be supplying a pet-sitting, walking
and feeding service. He can wait in for deliveries and supply
experienced staff for drinks and dinner parties. “Basically, I do your
chores so that your free time really is free,” said Mark. “At Gaia Home
Services, I believe in thoroughness and high-quality customer service
and satisfaction.”
As Mark expands the business he will be looking for experienced staff,
so if you are a good scrubber, waiter, barman or someone with some
spare time, drop him a line. For a full range of Gaia services and fees,
