FREEWAT - Free and Open Source Software Tools for Water Resource Management
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant
agreement No 642224
Introduction/1
A comprehensive hydrogeological model requires a wide range of
information, i.e. geological, geographical, hydrochemical or
hydrogeological etc. Each field complements the interpretation of the
others fields. For example, a hydrogeological characterization from a
studied area (e.g. piezometry) can be complemented and validated with
the generation of a hydrochemical and geological analysis .

The Hydrogeological Analysis Tools sub-module form part of a wider

framework developed into FREEWAT. It is created in with aim of facilitate
the pre-processing of further hydrogeological analysis and
interpretations.

These tools provide a wide range of methodologies for querying,

interpreting, and comparing groundwater quantity data and facilitates
the pre-processing analysis for being used in the realization of
groundwater simulation.

Introduction/2

Download and installation of the following software is required:

 QGIS version 2.14Essen (https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html)
or later

 the provided version of the FREEWAT plugin

 MODFLOW-2005 (http://water.usgs.gov/ogw/modflow/MODFLOW.html)

In order to install all these softwares, please follow the instructions

contained in the README.rst file within the provided plugin folder.

This exercise was successfully performed within WINDOWS 7 and

WINDOWS 10 OS and using QGIS versions 2.8, 2.10, 2.14 and 2.18.

Objectives
The general aim of this tutorial is to introduce AkvaGIS Database
structure and the Hydrogeological tools.

Introduction of AKvaGIS Database:

Database structure
Data Management
Create / Open AkvaGIS Database
Hydrogeological Data Management

Introduction of Hydrogeological Tools:

Create Spatial Query
Hydrogeological Maps

To achieve this scope, the database structure is shown, but how to

introduce information into AkvaGIS database and how to create spatial-
temporal queries is explained as well.
6
Input data files
The folder input_data contains the following subfolders with the data
necessary to implement the model:

 Subfolder1 - Ex1
 HydrogeologicalPointsMeasurementsTest.csv is a cvs file
which contains information related with values of the
observation and the date of the observation (of the head);
 HydrogeologicalPointsObservationsTest.csv is a cvs file which
contains information related with Interval of time of the
observation and Point where the head measurement where
done;
 PointsTest.csv is a cvs file which contains information related
with geographical information where hydrogeological field
tests was made;

Entering the data into the AkvaGIS
DataBase
The order to store new data in the different
tables is:

Parties table table table table

Hydrogelogical Information

Hydrogeological
Points Points
PointsObervation
Measurements

28
Entering the data into the AkvaGIS
DataBase
Please, notice that:
The essential workflow to introduce the data coming from the hydrogeological data is:

1. Firstly, any new point has to be introduced in Point table, then if it is a observation
point please, define this point in HydrogeologicalPointsObservaions table.

2. Define a new campaign in Campaign Table if you are adding new analysis for a new
campaign.

3. Introduce the information about the Observation in each point (piezometer or well)
in HydrogeologicalPointsObservations Table . For instance, size, date, the procedure
used to collect all the data (previously introduce any new procedure in Procedures
table if you need it).

4. Enter the results of the analysis of each sample in

HydrogeologicalPointsMeasurements Table.

Further information. please see the manual of AkvaGIS (Volume 4).
