We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday this
Christmas season. As we enter 2019, we wish each of
you a prosperous, healthy, and happy New Year. This is
also a time when we reflect on the events and
experiences of the past year. The Library has had a busy
and productive year, and it has been rewarding for us
all. We are, as always, excited to continue in our
mission of serving our community with free quality
library and information services. Additionally, we have
many new and exciting activities and events planned, so
be sure to check our events calendar. Also, our website,
www.odcpl.com, always has the latest important
information and resources.
January begins a new year for our Friends of the
Library (FOL), and this month will be eventful as they
prepare for their annual luncheon, which is scheduled
for Monday, January 28, at Noon in the West Wing of
the Library. This luncheon is known throughout the
Wiregrass for the delicious food because we have the
best cooks in the area!
We are excited to announce that the Friends’
Annual Luncheon will feature special guests. Chad
Brown and Joei Vogt, local architects from J. Michael
Lee Associates, will give an exciting presentation on
the plans for the new library facility. We are all thrilled
to have them attend this year’s luncheon.
Our Food-for-Fines campaign has helped
accomplish two important objectives. First, all
nonperishable food items received during the drive have
gone to feed the needy within our community, which is
especially crucial during the holiday season.
Additionally, the Food-for-Fines campaign served as an
incentive for patrons to return late materials because
they received a $4.00 credit toward their fines for each
food item donated. These efforts have resulted in the
return of a record-number of late library materials. This
campaign will continue through Saturday, January 5.

Happy New Year! As we all prepare to commit to our
various New Year’s resolutions, we hope visiting your Library
to enjoy a program, find a new favorite author, or learn
something new is at the top of your list! We can help with one
of those commitments with a year full of articles “From the
Creel Richardson Room” on a variety of local history and
genealogy topics. In honor of Alabama’s upcoming 200 th
birthday, this year’s theme for the Alabama 200 celebrations is
“Sharing Our Stories,” and I plan to share the stories of
individuals you may not have known who have connections to
Dale County, Alabama. I hope you find the upcoming articles
as intriguing to read as I have in researching and writing them.
Our first individual is currently a best-selling author who
lived in Ozark for a short period in the 1950s & 60s: William
Edmund Butterworth, III. You may recognize him as the
author W.E.B. Griffin, which is only one of 14 different
pseudonyms Butterworth has used since 1960. Butterworth,
born in New Jersey in 1929, enlisted in the Army at the age of
16. He served in Germany from 1946-1947 and in Korea from
1951-1953. Upon his release from active duty in 1953, he was
appointed as the Chief of the Publications Division of the U.S.
Army Signal Aviation Test & Support Activity at Fort Rucker.
Although he began writing the first chapters of his first novel
while still in Korea, and continued to write part-time while
working at Fort Rucker, he decided by 1961 to devote all of his
time to writing his own novels.
His first published novel was Comfort Me with Love
(1960). Now, almost 60 years later, he has authored more than
160 books, including over 50 epic best-selling novels. He is
well-known for his military and detective fiction titles, but did
you know he was also the author of several juvenile fiction and
non-fiction books in his early years? In fact, he autographed
and donated 15 copies of various juvenile fiction titles to the
Library from 1967 to 1971. These include titles such as
Bryan’s Dog (1967), L’il Wildcat (1967), and others, written as
Edmund O. Scholefield. He also donated Y ankee Boy (1971),
My Father’s Quite a Guy (1971), and other works written
under the pseudonym, W.E. Butterworth. He autographed each
book with a personalized message to the Library. Mrs. Alice
Doughtie, the Librarian at the time, received them with great
appreciation in a time when there was a great demand for high
interest level books for high school boys.
Although these books are not available for checkout, I
invite you all to visit the Library during the month of January
to view this month’s display in the Library’s foyer. The display
will feature photocopies of the autographed pages from the 15
books as well as more information about the books and the
author behind them.
