Process To Create An IBM/SPSS Interviewer FixPack and Update Installer

FOR USE BY AUTHORISED USERS ONLY

This procedure will create a file that can be used to update any of the machines
that have the Kantar installed version of IBM SPSS Interviewer 6.0.1. to the
latest Fix Pack level

Once created, the edited installer will be used for future updates quickly,
securely and easily without the need to return machines to an expert to carry it
out – it can be run by the Interviewer’s themselves.

It may be used to either update after the Base system has been installed for a
new installation, or on a machine with the full installation of Interviewer plus Fix
Pack 1 .

To allow the installer to be run by a “non-Administrator” windows user as used

by the interviewer themselves, the password for MRADMIN must be encoded (so
that it cannot be read for security) and put into the installation deck.

This may seem intimidating at first but is not as difficult as it may first appear!

Before starting ensure that you have the latest version of the installer e.g.
“INT601_FPx_Install.zip”

1. This process will require a machine that has the Kantar version,
Interviewer 6.0.1 installed. It does not matter if it has already been
used for interviewing or not.

2. Logon using the MRADMIN windows userid and password.

3. Unzip the “INT601_FPx_Install_Vx.zip” to a storage device available to

the machine.

4. Ensure Interviewer is not active and close (exit) the synch console. To
close the console locate and right click on the blue icon with white

arrow and select “Exit” – note if this is not

done it will be forcibly closed anyway!

5. Open task manager and end processes for IPlayerConsole.exe

IPlayerSyncMgr.exe and LogBck02.exe if active.

6. Open Windows Explorer and go to:-

7. Rename InterviewPlayer.config to BKUP_InterviewPlayer.config

note – this step is to save the live config file so that you can return to
it and make it live again later in the process.

8. Open Windows Explorer and go to:-

%programfiles%\IBM\SPSS\DataCollection\6\Interviewer \

9. Double click ConfigWizard.exe

10. A window “Configuration Options” will open – Click the “Advanced”

Tab.

11. In “Running User” enter MRADMIN and in “Password” enter the

password for MRADMIN on the specific Field machines to be updated –
this must be entered exactly as specified.

12. Leave other fields blank and click OK – ignore the Encryption warning
message in red if shown.

13. Open Windows Explorer and go to:-

14. A copy of InterviewPlayer.config file now needs to be taken and used

to replace the version in the installer in the following two locations

a. INT601_FPx_Install\Shared Content 32 Bit\DC Install Utility

b. INT601_FPx_Install\Shared Content 64 Bit\DC Install Utility

15. The folders will now look like this (the date modified of
InterviewPlayer.config will be today – i.e. when you created it)

16. Open Windows Explorer and go to:-

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\IBM\SPSS\DataCollection\6\Interviewer

17. Rename BKUP_InterviewPlayer.config to InterviewPlayer.config

(i.e. replacing the backup you took in step 7)

18. The amended INT601_FPx_Install should now be backed up as this is

now the master installer for your machines.

19. Once you have that master installer, update a machine all that is
necessary is to log on as any user, ensure all programs have been
closed (the machine will restart at the end) and open
INT601_FPx_Install and double click on Install_FPx.bat

20. Ignore the message “folder not found” or similar that may appear – it
creates the required folder if not there.

21. You may be prompted to accept that a program wants to make

changes to your system – please accept this.

22. The project CensusS or CensusV should be run to verify that all parts
of the install have worked. Kantar employees should search for
“Census” on Konnect for full details of this project.

A Summary Of The Steps.

To clarify the process you follow these steps:-

1. On a machine which has Interviewer base (Step I) installed or a previous full install –
this only has to be done once as you are creating an installer that can be used on
any machine with the same MRADMIN password.

2. Take a backup copy of the InterviewPlayer.config file located in

C:\ProgramData\IBM\SPSS\DataCollection\6\Interviewer as this needs to be
replaced at the end of the process.

3. Run the wizard that will update the InterviewPlayer.config and insert the userid
MRADMIN and the password.

4. The wizard will update InterviewPlayer.config file but encrypt the password for
MRADMIN so that it cannot be read.

5. Copy the new version of InterviewPlayer.config to both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions
“DC Install Utility”

6. Put the backup copy of InterviewPlayer.config taken in Step 1 above back in

C:\ProgramData\IBM\SPSS\DataCollection\6\Interviewer

7. The newly amended FPx install can now be run on any of your machines to bring
them up to the latest fix level

I repeat, please note that for future updates simply a case of putting the
InterviewPlayer.config containing the password for MRADMIN into the installer and running it
– the point being that it can be run by any user, including the interviewers who must have
non-Administrator userids for windows (they must not be able to change system settings
such as the time or date.

KNOWN PROBLEMS and ISSUES

a) XP machines must NOT have simple file sharing turned on. If the installer
fails check the following:-

o Open Windows Explorer. Select Tools and then Folder Options

o Click on the View tab and locate “Use simple file sharing”

Ensure that the box is empty – i.e. NOT selected. Click OK to Save

b) "Configuration file does contain any valid credentials" - means that the
config file you created and inserted into the install deck does not have the
correct password set for MRADMIN.
Check that you have used the correct password for MRADMIN and
followed the process above correctly and that the InterviewPlayer.config
has been put into the 32 or 64 part of the installer being used on this
machine.

c) If upgrading an XP machine, it must be connected to a network – the

machine does not do anything or require access. This is just a strange
Microsoft restriction.
