Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), Chennai is one of the few institutions in India offering bachelor’s, masters and
research programs in the field of Mathematics. The institute offers 2 bachelor degree courses, 3 master’s degree courses
and 3 Ph.D. programs in the key areas of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics.

The institute conducts entrance exams for each of the courses, every year. Admission to the courses offered at CMI are
made on the basis of candidate’s performance in the entrance test. Admission process at CMI starts around the end of
February to beginning of March while the entrance test take place around the end of May. The entrance test  is going to be
held on May 18, 2019 (tentative).

The batch strength every year varies from 10 to 25 and the overall strength of CMI lies between 100-125 students, each
year. Students who have passed Indian National Science Olympiads (Mathematics/Physics) are offered direct entries to
the respective bachelor degree courses, thus exempting them from writing the entrance test

CMI, Chennai offers two bachelor’s degree programs:

3-Year B.Sc. (Honours) Program in Mathematics and Computer Science

3-Year B.Sc. (Honours) Program in Mathematics and Physics

Eligibility Criteria for B.Sc.:

For B.Sc. (Honours) Program, one must have passed/expected to pass, the 12th Standard examinations or equivalent in
the year 2016 to be eligible for admission.

Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D.:

For Ph.D. program in Mathematics: Students with an M.Sc. degree in Mathematics or equivalent and students with
a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science with a strong aptitude for research
For Ph.D. program in Computer Science: Students with a B.E., B.Tech. M.Sc., or M.C.A. degree and students with a
bachelor’s degree in Science with a strong aptitude for research
For Ph.D. Program in Physics: Students with an M.Sc. degree in Physics and students with a bachelor’s degree in
Physics or Engineering with a strong aptitude for research

How to apply?

M.Sc , M.Phil/Ph.D in Science & B.Sc

Application for admission to the all the degree program at CMI shall be made available on the institute’s official website.
Announcement for admission to the institute will be made in early march of 2019.

You may choose to apply online or request a printed application form, either by post or in person. All the application
methods have been explained for your ease, below.

Here are the steps to apply online:

1. Go to the institute’s official website.

2. Now, click on online application form, you will need to begin with entering your email id and submit.
3. You will receive a confirmation mail, on successful verification of the mail, you will receive you CMI 2019 Applicant
ID and Password.
4. Using the applicant ID and Password, login on the official website, and provide all the information required for the
completion of application.

Online application fee: Rs. 600

Offline application fee: Rs. 700

Steps to obtaining application form by post:

1. You will need to send a Demand Draft (DD) of Rs. 700 made in favor of Chennai Mathematical Institute, payable at
Chennai.
2. The DD needs to be sent to the below mentioned address preferably by speed-post or courier:

Selection Procedure

For selection to B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs at CMI, Chennai, one must appear for the common entrance test
conducted by the institute followed by an interview in Chennai. The entrance test for 2019-20 session will be held on May
18, 2019 (tentative).

Admission Reservation

Reservation Criteria for admission to the institute is at par with MHRD norms.
