Q.1 How many EDTA [ ethylenediamaniestetraacetic acid] molecules are required to make an
ocetahedralcomplex with Ca2+ ion?

Ans. One. EDTA being hexadentate ligand, only one molecule is sufficent to makes an
octahedral complex with Ca2+ ion.

Q.2 Write the name of the compound[Cr(NH3)5(NCS)][ZnCl4].

Ans. Pentaammoniumisothiocyanatochromium(III) tetrachloridozincate(II).

Q.3 [CuCl4] exists while [CuI4]2- does not exist, why?

Ans. Iodine atom is very large in size and copper atom is hot able to accomadete four large
atoms around it.

Q.4 In solid CuSo4.5H2O copper is coordinated to how many water molecules.

Ans Four water molecules are coordinated to copper.

Q.5 Why is K4[Fe(CN)6] is not toxic whereas KCN is higer toxic?

Ans. The compound K4[Fe(CN)6] ionses in water as K4[Fe(CN)6] →4K+ + [Fe(CN)]4-

Where as KCN ionies as KCN →k+ + CN-

The free CN- ion is highly toxic thus KCN which given free CN- ion is higly toxic on the other
hand the solution of K4[Fe(CN)6] given [Fe(CN)6]4- ion which does not contans free CN- ions and
hence it is toxic.

Q.6 Given the following dat about the absorption maxima of several complex ions, What is the
order of ∆o for these ions?

Compunds λ maxi

[CrCl6]3- 758

[Cr( NH3)6]3+ 465

[Cr(H2O)6]3+ 694
ANS- ∆o[CrCl6]3- <[Cr(H2O)6]3+< [Cr( NH3)6]3+

The values of splitting factor , ∆o is inversely related to the wave length of maximum absorption
λ maxi,( E=hv= hc/ λ).

Q.6 Predict the order of ∆o for the following compound s . [Fe(H2O)6]2+ , [Fe(CN)2(H2O)4],
[Fe(CN)4(H2O)2]2-

ANS . [Fe(H2O)6]2+< [Fe(CN)2(H2O)4] < [Fe(CN)4(H2O)2]2-

The value of ∆o for mix ligands depends on additive contribution of ligand strengths. Since CN-
has greater strength than H2O ,the strength increases as the number of CN- ion s increases.

Q.7What is the most likely configuration of cobalt d-electron for the species [CoCl6]3- and
,[Co(NO ) ]3- ?
2 6

ANS-[CoCl6]3- high spin ,[Co(NO2) 6]3- ; low spin

Weak field ligands( like cl-) giving low spin value of ∆o from high spin octahedral complexes
whereas strong field ligands (like NO2-) give rise to low spin complexes.

Q.8 What are the total numbers of isomers formed by [Co(en) 2 cl2]Br.

ANS –The complex [Co(en) 2 cl2]Br forms total four isomers one is its ionisation isomer [Co(en) 2
clBr]Cl cis isomer (which exist in to two optical isomers dextro and laevo )and trans isomer .

Q-9 CoSO4Cl.5NH3exist in to two isomeric forms A and B .Isomer A reacts with AgNO3 to give
white ppt but does not react with BaCl2. Isomer B give white ppt with BaCl2 but does not react
with AgNO3

Answer the following Questions a) Identify A and B and write there structural formulaes

b) Name the type of isomerism involved

c) IUPAC naming of A and B

Ans.a) A-[ CoSO4(NH3)5] Cl B -[ Co(NH3)5 Cl] SO4

b) Ionisation isomerism

c) A- pentamminesulphatocobalt(III) chloride B- pentamminechloridocobalt(III) sulphate

Q 10 A metal ion Mn+ having d4 valence electronic configuration combines with three bidentate
ligand o form a complex compound .Assuming ∆o> P i) Explain orbital splitting during this
complex formation

ii) Write the electronic configuration of the metal Mn+ in term of t2g andeg

iii) What type of hybridization will Mn+ ion have ?

iv) Name the type of isomerism exhibited by this complex.

Ans.

i)∆o> P, pairing will occur in the t2g orbital and eg orbital remain vacant

ii) t2g4 eg0

iii) as there are three bidentate ligands combine therefore hybridization will be d2sp3

iv) optical isomerism
