Reflection on Reading as Physiological Process

Reading is a must! In the world of globalization in which the communication process is

within your grasp due to the advent of social media interface; we cannot be able to live in the
millennium era of world-wide-web if we cannot read. Reading is not only necessary but also a
necessity.

Physiological process involves in the matters pertaining to both an organic

or physiological process and a mental or cognitive process. It is the thinking and alertness of
the brain that is used to process the words that are on a page or screen when you read. Whilst
you are alert and thinking, the brain is working at full capacity, but even at rest it is
performing physiological functions to keep us alive and keep us breathing. Our body is
constantly performing physiological tasks, most of the time we are not aware of the reactions
within our body that our brain and nervous system are causing.

As reading involve greatly on mind activity; it may also exercise the muscle organ of our
mouth as we vocalized reading information and practice intonation, pronunciation and voice
modulation. Barton (2013) defined reading as a physiological process as your brain needs to
react to what is on the page. It is the thinking and alertness of the brain that is used to process
the words that are on a page or screen when you read. Whilst you are alert and thinking, the
brain is working at full capacity, but even at rest it is performing physiological functions to keep
us alive and keep us breathing. Our body is constantly performing physiological tasks, most of
the time we are not aware of the reactions within our body that our brain and nervous system
are causing.
Reflection on Reading as Cognitive Process

Reading is a sign of cognitive development on the part of students, hence

reading signify learning. Reading is a change in the mental state that allows learners to
connect knowledge and emotions which come into play in our responses. Those
responses in turn impact on the world and the world impacts on them. It is true child is
born with innate knowledge and he acts upon the world and the world acts upon him
and thus both shaped by and shape the world but impact of society on child’s learning
cannot be ignored. But this change can’t take place if the child could not be able to
read. For example the key concept of social constructivism is ZPD (Zone of Proximal
Development). According to Vygotsky learners can operate beyond their current level of
competence if provided support of whether teachers or peers etc; yet this support is
conceptualized if the students will be able to read and able to learn the signs and
language used in the book, environment as well as in the internet.. They focus on
communication and collaboration through. This approach is the major theoretical
perspective for learning in online communities.

Steps in reading comprehension outline the fundamental topics to achieve full

comprehension when the students read the information given by them by their
facilitators. Stimulus or readiness the primary or first step in reading comprehension;
reading without comprehension is just like a bunch of army in a war without arms or
ammunitions. The meaning of the information should be contextualized by the students
to accomplish not only comprehension of what they are reading but also travels across
the world of books as the venture in the new world of discovery.
Reflection on Reading as Communication Process

Reading as communication process is the understanding of, and effort invested

in completing a task or activity fosters learning more than anything else. In reading to
attain a meaningful learning; learner is willingly and actively engaged in a meaningful
task and this task engages active, constructive, intentional, authentic and cooperative
activities. Communities of play and work help develop skills and knowledge; community
itself is the medium of communication.

Reading as communication process begins when new experiences provide

discrepancy about learner’s observation and understanding in the context of what they
read most especially to the social media interface such as Facebook and Twitter. They
integrate new experiences with prior knowledge and set goals for what they need to
learn in order to make sense out of what they read.

The most contemporary research on communication has shown that learning

tasks that are situated in real world task or simulated in some case based or problem
based environment are not only better understood and remembered but also more
consistently transferred to new situations.

In everyday world humans naturally seek out others to help them solve problems
and perform tasks. They exploit each other’s skills and appropriate each other’s
knowledge .Conversation and collaborative learning should be encouraged because it is
the most natural way of meaning making. We cannot achieve these ends if the students
will not be able to read and comprehend what had been they were reading.
