IE2010E HW 1

1. A restaurant is offering set meals where the diner selects (i) 2 appetizers from a list of 8
possible appetizers, (ii) an entrée from a list of 12 possible entrées and (iii) a beverage from
a list of 5 beverages. Find the number of possible “2-appetizers-1-entrée-1-beverage”
combinations.

2. Singapore currently has approximately 1,200,000 households. Most households have at least
one fixed telephone line. A fixed telephone line number in Singapore begins with a 6, followed
by seven digits that can be between 0 and 9. What is the maximum number of unique fixed
telephone lines in Singapore?

3. The immigration department receives around 10,000 immigration applications each year. On
average, the processing of an application begins 30 calendar days after it was received.
Furthermore, the average processing time for each application is 5 calendar days. Using Little’s
Law, estimate the average number of applications that are waiting or are being processed.

4. There are 50,000 hotel rooms in Singapore. The average occupancy rate in Singapore is 86%.
On average, the duration of each stay is 3.5 days. Each room will have an average of 1.7
individuals staying in it. Using Little’s Law, estimate the average number of individuals (not
rooms) that are checking into the hotel each day.

5. Suppose that Carl sells an average of 50 burgers and 100 hotdogs each day. Furthermore,
the standard deviation of daily burger and hotdog sales are 4 and 9, respectively. Assume
that daily burger and hotdog sales are normally distributed.
a) What is the probability that Carl will sell at least 48 burgers in a given day?
b) What is the probability that Carl will sell at most 110 hotdogs in a given day?
c) What is the probability that total sales in a given day is at least 155?
d) What assumption did you have to make in answering the questions above?

6. Consider a factory floor with the following work center layout:

Entrance Exit

Suppose that the flow rate between the work center (WC) is as follows:

WC1 WC2 WC3 Exit

Enter 50 30 0 -
WC1 - 20 30 30
WC2 - - 40 20
WC3 - - - 20

a. Determine the number of different possible work center layouts for this factory.
b. Determine the optimal work center layout for the factory floor.
