ABSTRACT

This paper is a comparative study between Concrete Hollow Block (CHB)

containing Sea Sand as aggregate and of Concrete Hollow Block (CHB)

containing Riverbank Sand as aggregate. The continuous diminishing deposit of

Riverbank Sand resources has meant a great challenge upon the researchers to

investigate the potential of utilizing Sea Sand as substitute aggregate for Concrete

Hollow Blocks in the construction industry. Aggregate sampling and laboratory

experiments were undertaken in accordance to standard procedures prescribed by

the American Standard for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

The results showed that the difference between the density of concrete

hollow blocks with sea sand aggregate and concrete hollow blocks with riverbank

sand aggregate was not significant. Concrete hollow blocks containing sea sand

aggregate turned out to have a higher density of 22.727 kg/m3 compared to

concrete hollow blocks with a density of 20.5144 kg/m3 in the 28 days curing

period. Also, the difference between the compressive strength of concrete hollow

blocks with sea sand aggregate and concrete hollow blocks with riverbank sand

aggregate was significant. Concrete hollow blocks containing sea sand aggregate

had higher compressive strength of 2.026 MPa compared to concrete hollow

blocks containing riverbank sand aggregate with a compressive strength of 1.364

MPa in the 28 days curing period. Lastly, the difference between the flexural

strength of concrete hollow blocks with sea sand aggregate and concrete hollow

blocks with riverbank sand aggregate was not significant. Concrete hollow blocks

containing sea sand aggregate had higher flexural strength of 1.186 MPa

compared to concrete hollow blocks containing riverbank sand aggregate with a

flexural strength of 0.736 MPa in the 28 days curing period. The researchers

therefore concluded a higher potential on sea sand as substitute for riverbank sand

as aggregate for concrete hollow blocks.
