(Subjective Test - 02)

Physics: Moving charges in magnetic field, Magnetic effects of current, Magnetism, Electromagnetic induction,
Alternating currents and Electromagnetic waves.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS :

(i) All questions are compulsory.

(ii) Question number 1 to 5 are very short answer type questions and carry 1 mark each.

(iii) Question number 6 to 10 are short answer type questions and carry 2 marks each.

(iv) Question number 11 to 22 are also short answer type questions and carry 3 marks each.

(v) Question number 23 are also short answer type questions and carry 3 marks each.

(vi) Question number 24 to 26 are long answer type questions and carry 5 marks each.

(vii) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in, one question of 3 marks and all
three questions of 5 marks each. You have to attempt only one of the given choices in such questions.

(viii) Use log tables if necessary, use of calculator is not allowed.

SECTION-A

Q1. A certain electric motor wires carry a current of 5 A perpendicular to magnetic field of 0.8 T. What is the
force on each cm of the wires? [1]

Q2. A steady current is flowing in a cylindrical conductor. Does electric field exist within the conductor? [1]

Q3. A beam of α particles projected along positive x-axis, experience a force due to a magnetic field along the
positive y-axis as shown in figure. What is the direction of magnetic field? [1]

Q4. On the basis of electromagnetic theory, show how does the refractive index of a material medium depend on
its relative permeability and dielectric constant. [1]

Q5. Can the voltage drop across the inductor or the capacitor in a series LCR circuit be grater than the applied
voltage of the AC source? Justify your answer. [1]

SECTION-B

Q6. A proton and an α particle enter a uniform magnetic field perpendicularity, with the same speed. How many
times is the time period of the α particle than that of the proton? Deduce an expression for the ratio of the
radii of the circular paths of two particles. [2]
Q7. A long straight wire AB wire AB carries a current I. A proton P travels with a speed v, parallel to the wire,
at a distance d from it in a direction opposite to the current as shown in figure. What is the force experinced
by the proton and what is its direction? [2]

Q8. Electric field at a given point in space is oscillating with an angular frequency for 9π × 1012 rads–1 and an amplitude
of 7.5 Vm–1 along y-axis. Write the equation of electric field and magnetic field. Given that the
electromagnetic wave is propagating along x direction. [2]

How would you establish an instantaneous displacement current of 1.0 A in the space between the plates of 1 µF
capacitor?
Q9. An 80 V, 800 W heater is to be operated on a 100 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate the inductance of the choke
reaquired [2]
Q10. Two identical loops, one of copper and the other of aluminium, are rotated with the same angular speed in
the same magnetic field. Compare: [2]
a. The induced emf, and
b. The current produced in the two coils, justify your answer.

SECTION-C

Q11. A solenoid has a core of a material with relative permeability 400. The windings of the solenoid are insulated
from the core and carry a current of 2A. If the number of turns is 1000 per metre, calculae (i) H (ii) B
(iii) intensity of magnetisation l, and (iv) the magnetising current. [3]

Q12. A sample of paramagnetic salt contains 2 × 1024 atomic dipoles, each of moment 1.5 × 10–23 JT–1. The sample
is placed under a homogeneous magnetic field of 0.64 T and cooled to a temperature of 4.2 K. The degree
of magnetic saturation achieved is equal to 15%. What is the total dipole moment of the sample for a magnetic
field of 0.98 T and a temperature of 2.8 K? [3]

Q13. In the circuit shown in figure, the current is to be measure. What is the value of the current if the ammeter
shown

i. Is a galvanometer with a resistance G = 60 Ω . (ii) is a galvanometer decribed in (i) but converted to an


ammeter by a shunt resistance S = 0.02 Ω ; (iii) is a an ideal ammeter with zero resistance? [3]

Q14. Where on the earth’s surface is the value of vertical component of the earth’s magnetic field zero? The horizontal
component of the earth’s magnetic field at a given place is 0.4 × 10–4 Wbm–2 and angle of dip is 30°. Calculate
the value of (i) vertical component, (ii) the total intensity of the earth’s magnetic field. [3]

Q15. In the figure two long parallel current carrying wires I and II are shown. Find the magnitudes and directions
of the magnetic field induction at the points P, Q and R in the plane of paper [3]

Q16. A cyclotron’s oscillator frequency is 10 MHz. What should be the operating magnetic field for accelerating
protons? If the radius of its dees is 60cm, what is the kinetic energy (in MeV) of the proton beam produced
by the accelerator. [3]

Q17. A domain in ferromagnetic iron is in the form of a cube of side length 10–4 m. Estimate the number of iron
atoms in the domain and the maximum possible dipole moment and magnetisation of the domain. The
molecular mass of iron is 55g mole–1 and its density is 7.9 g cm–3. Assume that each iron atom has a dipole
moment of 9.27 × 10–24 Am2. [3]

Q18. A proton (charge 1.6 × 10–19 C, mass m = 1.67 × 10–27 kg) is shot with a speed 8 × 106 ms–1 at angle 30°
with the x-axis. A uniform magnetic field B = 0.30 T exists along the x-axis. Show that the path of the proton
is helix and find the radius of the helix. [3]

Q19. A circuit contains two inductors in series with self inductances L1 and L2 and mutual inductance M. Obtain
a formula for the equivalent inductance in the circuit. [3]

Q20. Name the SI unit of magnetic flux and show that it equals volt–second. Give three possible ways of producing
an indcued emf in a coil giving an example in each case. [3]

Q21. Light with an energy flux of 18 W cm–2 falls on a non–reflecting surface at normal incidence. If the surface
has an area of 20 cm2, find the average force exerted on the surface during a 30 minute time span. [3]

Q22. A coil of inductance 0.50 H and resistance 100 Ω is connected to a 240 V, 50 Hz AC supply. [3]

a. What is the inductance of circuit?

b. What is the maximum current in the coil?

Q23. It is desired to supply a current of 2 A through a resistance of 10 Ω . As many as 20 cells are provided,
each of emf 2 V and internal resistance 0.5 Ω . Two friends Sanju and Shyam try their hand on the problrm.
Sanju succeeds but Shyam fails. [4]

Answer the following questions on the basis of given passage

i. Justify the set up of Sanju?

ii. What might have gone wrong with Shyam when he gets 1.4A current in the external load?

iii. What are the basic values shown by Sanju and Shyam in their work?

SECTION-D

Q24. a. Using Biot-Savart’s law, derive the expression for the magnetic field in the vector form at a point on the
axis of a circle current loop. [5]

b. What does a toroid consist of ?

Find out the expression for the magnetic field inside a toroid for N turns of the coil having the average
radius r and carrying a current I. Show that the magnetic field in the open space inside and exterior to
the toroid is zero.

OR

a. Draw a schematic sketch of a cyclotron. Explain clearly the role of crossed electric and magnetic field
in accelerating the charge. Hence derive the expression for the kinetic energy acquired by the particles.

b. An α particle and a proton are released from the centre of the cyclotron and made to accelerte.

i. Can both be accelerated at the same cyclotron frequency? Give reason to justify your answer.

ii. When they are accelerated in turn, which of the two will have higher velocity at the exit slit of the dees?

Q25. a. A small compass needle of magnetic moment τn is free to turn about an axis perpendicular to the
direction of uniform magnetic field ‘B’. The moment of inertia of the needle about the axis is . The needle
is slightly disturbed from its stable position and then released. Prove that it executes simple harmonic
motion. Hence deduce the expression for its time period. [5]

b. A compass needle, free to turn in a vertical plane orients itself with its axis vertical at a certain place
on the earth. Find out the values of (i) horizontal component of earths magnetic field and (ii) angle of
dip at the place.

OR

a. Describe a simple experiment (or activity) to show that the polarity of emf induced in a coil is always
such that it tends to produce a current which opposes the change of magnetic flux that produces it.

OR
An AC source of voltage V = V0 sin ωt is connected to a series combination of L, C and R. Use the phasor diagram
to obtain expressions for impedance of the circuit and phase angle between voltage and current.
(i) Find the condition when current will be in phase with the voltage. What is the circuit in this condition called?
(ii) In a series LR circuit XL = R and power factor of the circuit is P1, when capacitor with capacitance C such that
