SECTION 2
THEORY OF OPERATION
Pleasant Street Lifting Bridge 11
DISPLACEMENT CYLINDER
The displacement cylinder design concept proposed for the Pleasant bridge is shown in Figure 1. The
cylinder has a piston similar to a double acting cylinder but does not have piston seals. The piston
contains flow passages that will allow fluid to pass from the rod side to the cap side of the piston, and
vise versa. The piston acts as a guide to maintain center alignment of the rod within the cylinder barrel
to insure long life for the rod seals.
Q=Flow (GPM)
A=Area (in2)
( )
Pleasant Street Lifting Bridge 12
The displacement cylinder requires an external load to retract the cylinder, it cannot be retracted
hydraulically. In the proposed hydraulic system design the weight of the bridge deck will retract the
cylinders.
Pleasant Street Lifting Bridge 13
BENEFITS
The displacement cylinder was selected over a double acting cylinder due to the capability of having
only field replaceable seals in the cylinder. The rod seal is the only seal that is replaceable in the field.
With a double acting cylinder, if /when a piston seal fails, the cylinder must be removed from the bridge
and returned to a repair shop to be completely disassembled in order to access and replace a piston
seal.
The displacement cylinder was also selected over a single acting cylinder due to the benefits of
maintaining fluid around the cylinder rod while it is fully retracted. A single acting cylinder allows air to
surround the cylinder rod while retracted. With each cycle of a single acting cylinder the air around the
rod is exhausted during extension and new air is drawn in when retracting. Due to the environmental
conditions at the locations of the cylinders, moisture build up and corrosion would cause premature
failures.
Through the implementation of a displacement cylinder, the fluid port and cylinder manifold were
located near the rod end of the cylinder, reducing the length of conduit required and also improving the
access to the manifold for setup and maintenance. The larger barrel required for a displacement
cylinder vs. a single acting cylinder improves the buckling strength of the cylinder which is beneficial in
this situation.
Pleasant Street Lifting Bridge 14
1. Both Motors (1)[M1 and M2] are selected. Upon turning on the Motors (1), Pumps (3)
will produce nominal pressure and flow over Solenoid Valve (14)[SV1] which is
energized to divert flow back to Tank (42) prior to raising the lift span.
2. Operator has the option to move joystick controller to “RAISE-SLOW” or “RAISE
FAST” at will during raising, and to “LOWER-FAST” or “LOWER-SLOW” on the same
basis during lowering to control the speed manually, or to stop the span at any time by
moving the joystick controller to “STOP”. The pump motors will run when raising the
span, and when the joystick is in the neutral position. The pump motors will shut down
during lowering of the span, allowing the span to lower by gravity.
a. Such actions will cause the SOLENOID VALVES (18) [SV3 and SV4] to act in
sequence by means of limit switches contacted by the ACCEL/DECEL
ACTUATORS (34) at the ends of their strokes.
(1) When raising or lowering, the selection of “RAISE-“ or “LOWER-
FAST” shall initially cause SLOW SPEED SOLENOID VALVE (18)
[SV3] to energize, causing the SLOW SPEED ACCEL / DECEL
ACTUATOR (34) to extend over a 5 second period (subject to hydraulic
adjustment by means of SLOW SPEED FLOW CONTROL VALVE
(35)). When the SLOW SPEED ACCEL / DECEL ACTUATOR (34) is
fully extended, thereby having accelerated the span to approximately 1/2
of full speed, a LIMIT SWITCH [LS-3E] shall be contacted that will
allow FAST SPEED SOLENOID VALVE (18) [SV4] to be energized.
Provided the span has traveled beyond the Nearly Closed position, and
has not attained the Nearly Open position (or vice-versa when lowering),
this shall cause the FAST SPEED ACCEL / DECEL ACTUATOR (34)
to extend, bringing the span to full speed over a 5 second period (again
subject to hydraulic adjustment, by means of FAST FLOW CONTROL
VALVE (35)
(2) Moving the joystick controller to “RAISE-“ or “LOWER-SLOW” from
“RAISE-“ or “LOWER-FAST” shall cause FAST SPEED SOLENOID
VALVE (18) [SV4] to de-energize. This shall cause the FAST SPEED
ACCCEL / DECEL ACTUATOR (34) to retract, bringing the span back
to approximately 1/2 of full speed over a 5 second period (hydraulically
adjustable, as described above).
(3) Moving the joystick controller to “STOP” from “RAISE-“ or
“LOWERFAST” shall initially cause FAST SPEED SOLENOID
VALVE (18) [SV4] to de-energize. This shall cause the FAST SPEED
Pleasant Street Lifting Bridge 15
1. Manually close (twist/lock) the manual overrides on the cylinder “Lock Valves” Item
50 on both cylinder manifolds (SV14 and SV24).
2. To begin lowering the bridge, manually open item 38”Manual Lower” control valve.
The control valve will allow hydraulic fluid to flow out of the bridge cylinders
allowing the bridge to lower. The flow is proportional to the number of turns the
control valve is opened; excessive lowering speeds can/will damage the bridge and
support structures when the bridge reaches the fully lowered position.
3. To stop the manual lower sequence at any time, close the “Manual Lower” valve and
return the “Lock Valves” to their normally de-energized positions. The Lock valves
will hydraulically lock and hold the cylinders/bridge in place.
4. Once the bridge is fully lowered, return all the manually actuated valves to their
normal de-energized state
FLUID CONDITIONING
The hydraulic fluid can be filtered by running the electric motors and manually shifting the unload valve
(item 23) the unload valve. The hydraulic fluid will be circulated through the pressure filter and back
through the return filter through the unload valve. When Hydraulic fluid is replenished in the reservoir,
it is recommended to filter the oil for approximately thirty minutes using this method. Monitor the filter
bypass indicators to ensure that the filter elements are in acceptable condition. The hydraulic fluid can
be heated by returning the unload valve to its normal de-energized state and running the electric
motors. The fluid flow produced by the pumps will be forced over the relief valve creating heat. Do not
allow the hydraulic fluid to reach a temperature higher than 150°F.
Fluid differential volume from full retract to full extension is approximately 40 gallons, 20 gallons per
cylinder.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM LUBRICATION INFORMATION
Pleasant Street Lifting Bridge 50
LUBRICATION SCHEDULE
The lubrication schedule for the Pleasant St. Bridge is shown below in Table 3.
CLEVIS PIN
For the cylinder clevis pin, use Albida grease MP. Lubricate the slot in both cylinders where the bridge is
connected to the cylinder by pushing grease into the slot from both sides until the whole pin is
lubricated. See Figure 9 for the location of the pin and slot to be lubricated.
ELEKTRIMAX MOTORS
For the Electrimax motors, part number 40NCM-3-40-18, grease both of the motors using Albida Grease
MP. Each motor has two (2) lube points located on the back. See Figure 10 for the location of the lube
points.
RESERVOIR
The reservoir should be kept full of Shell Tellus V 32 Hydraulic fluid, and should be checked every six (6)
months, as shown in Table 3. Hydraulic fluid level should be check with the bridge fully lowered.

One end of these Schedule 40 nipples is threaded for a quick connection, while the other end is
unthreaded for a welded connection. They have welded construction so there is a weld bead on the inside,
except 1/8 -3/8 pipe sizes are seamless. They meet ASTM A312, ASTM A733, and ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.
Type 304/304L stainless steel offers very good corrosion resistance for an economical alternative to Type
316/316L. Type 316/316L stainless steel contains more nickel and has molybdenum for better
resistance to corrosion than Type 304/304L.
Connections: NPT on one end, unthreaded on the other end.

Don't confuse these with poor-quality fittings that don't make the grade—these are
the highest quality Class 150 low-pressure stainless steel fittings available. Their
high quality is proven by the standards they meet: ANSI/MSS SP-114 (for heat
treating, material thickness, and marking) and ASTM A351, except hex-socket
plugs.
Type 304 stainless steel offers very good corrosion resistance for an economical
alternative to Type 316. Type 316 stainless steel contains more nickel and has
molybdenum for better resistance to corrosion than Type 304.
Connections: NPT, unless otherwise stated.
For technical drawings and 3-D models, click on a part number.

Choose these fittings when you want for the same high quality found in our low-
pressure fittings, but need more strength to handle higher pressures. Also known
as Class 1000, these fittings meet ANSI/MSS SP-114 (for heat treating, material
thickness, and marking) and ASTM A182.
Type 304 stainless steel offers very good corrosion resistance for an economical
alternative to Type 316. Type 316 stainless steel contains more nickel and has
molybdenum for better resistance to corrosion than Type 304.

Don't confuse these with poor-quality fittings that don't make the grade—these are the highest quality
Class 150 low-pressure stainless steel fittings available. Their high quality is proven by the standards
they meet: ANSI/MSS SP-114 (for heat treating, material thickness, and marking) and ASTM A351,
except hex-socket plugs.
Type 304 stainless steel offers very good corrosion resistance for an economical alternative to Type
316. Type 316 stainless steel contains more nickel and has molybdenum for better resistance to
corrosion than Type 304.
Connections: NPT, unless otherwise stated.

FRONT MOUNTING LIQUID LEVEL GAGES - WTHERM
ITH AND W ITHOUT
OM ETER
A patented dual purpose closed circuit style liquid level gage that provides both instant and positive visual check of fluid
levels and temperature in either hydraulic or oil reservoirs. Maximum sight protection is provided by the heavy precision
machined bar stock body. Thermometer series gages have a protected sensing element that extends well into the tank -
unaffected by unrelated ambient temperature. Gages are furnished complete including O-ring seals and hex nuts for
mounting. A .06 (1.52mm) alignment adjustment at each stud facilitates mounting. This gage can be installed from the
outside on 1/2-20UNF tapped holes when reservoirs do not have access to the interior and tank wall thickness permits
tapping. For installations where gage is bolted to cylindrical tank wall, conical sleeves are available. Please specify when
ordering. Front mounting gages can be made to order with mounting centers up to 142.00 (3606.80mm) in 1.00 (25.40mm)
increments. Stainless steel dial thermometer: 1.38 (35.05mm) dia. dual scale Fahrenheit (50° to 300°), Centigrade (10° to

Breathers
Hydraulic reservoirs “breathe” air in and out as the oil level rises and falls.
This circulating air contains particles and moisture that can cause
corrosion, increase equipment wear and reduce fluid performance. In
typical systems, the internal hydraulic fluid is warmer than the
external environment. This difference in temperatures causes
water vapor to form. Breathers protect your hydraulic
system by filtering out damaging moisture and particles.
More than 25% of the samples sent to the Eaton Fluid
Analysis Laboratory for analysis have significant water
contamination. In an operating system, the H20-gate
Vent Breather creates a moisture barrier when there
is a 5°F (2°C) difference between reservoir and
ambient temperature and when there is a 10%
per minute exchange of air volume above the
fluid. The Mobile-gate breather is smaller in
size but is also 1/4 the size and 1/2 the capacity
of the H20-gate. These temperature and air flow
conditions are present in most hydraulic systems
which employ a cylinder.

Technical Features
Two-port check valves share the same cavity for a given frame size, Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive
however, pay close attention as flow paths may be in opposite environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP (see
directions. Option Selection below). External parts are made from stainless steel
with titanium or brass components, where applicable. Internal parts are
made from carbon steel leaded alloy, the same as standard valves. For
further details, please see the Materials of Construction page.
Check valves offer extremely low leakage rates with a maximum Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the

Capacity:
Pilot operated, balanced piston relief valve 100 gpm (380 L/min.)
Product Description
Pilot-operated, balanced-piston relief cartridges are normally closed pressure regulating valves. When the pressure at the
inlet (port 1) reaches the valve setting, the valve starts to open to tank (port 2), throttling flow to regulate the pressure.
These valves are accurate, have low pressure rise vs. flow, they are smooth and quiet, and are moderately fast.

Technical Features
All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and Back pressure on the tank port (port 2) is directly additive to the valve
functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given setting at a 1:1 ratio.
frame size).
Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive
relief circuits. If used in cross port relief circuits, consider spool leakage. environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP (see
Option Selection below). External parts are made from stainless steel
with titanium or brass components, where applicable. Internal parts are
made from carbon steel leaded alloy, the same as standard valves. For
further details, please see the Materials of Construction page.
Main stage orifice is protected by a 150 micron stainless steel screen. Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the
possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque
and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
Not suitable for use in load holding applications due to spool leakage.

Product Description
This solenoid-operated, 4-way, 2-position cartridge is a direct-acting, balanced spool directional valve. The transition between positions is closed. The
closed transition greatly reduces the loss of oil when shifting which can be of particular importance in pilot control circuits.

Important: Carefully consider the maximum system pressure. The pressure rating of the manifold is dependent on the manifold
material, with the port type/size a secondary consideration. Manifolds constructed of aluminum are not rated for pressures higher than
3000 psi (210 bar), regardless of the port type/size specified.
Product Description
Free-flow, nose-to-side check valves are on/off circuit components that allow free flow from the inlet (port 1) to the outlet (port 2) and
block flow in the opposite direction.

Shoulder Screws
Stainless Steel Shoulder Screws
Lg. Also called stripper and shoulder bolts, these screws have a shoulder that serves as a bearing or spacer. They’re
Dia. used for locating parts, and as retaining components, guide screws, axle bolts, fulcrums, and pivots. Screws have a
minimum Rockwell hardness of B55, a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi, and are not rated for shear strength.
They have a hex socket drive and a Class 3A thread fit. Those with a shoulder diameter of 1/4 and larger meet
Shoulder ANSI/ASME B18.3. Shoulder dia. tolerance is –0.002 to –0.004; shoulder length tolerance is ±0.005.
Type 316 and 18-8 stainless steel provide excellent corrosion resistance and may be mildly magnetic. More corro-
sion resistant than 18-8 stainless steel, Type 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which increases resistance to chlorides and sulfates.
Self-locking screws have a nylon patch that keeps them from vibrating loose. Patches remain effective at temperatures from –70° to +250° F.
