Interview Setting: Interview conducted at the librarian’s counter in Perpustakaan


Hamzah Sendut. The interview was conducted at 4.45 PM on Thursday afternoon.

Affiliation with interviewee: A librarian and student who are stranger to each other

Interviewer: Good Evening and thank you for agreeing to participate in this
interview.Can you describe some details on the use of English in your daily
communication here?

Interviewee: For me I use English to talk to foreign.. foreigner student, sometimes I use to
do my work (ahmmmm ahmmm) in email also I use in English

Interviewer: How often do you use English?

Interviewee:I think I really use English because I prefer to use Malay.

Interviewer: Rarely…

Interviewee:Yaa rarely.

Interviewer: Okay.In what situation do you use English the most?

Interviewee: Most hmmm. In works or daily life.

Interviewer: During work.Okay.

Interviewee: During work I use English when I have conversation with foreighn students.

Interviewer: What factors affect the usageof English on campus?

Interviewee: For me I think it is good because….( Interviewee paused)


Interviewer: (Interviwer give hints) What makes you not to speak English here?

Interviewee: The majority here is Malays the language used her is Malay

Interviewer: How to overcome this factor?

Interviewee: Maybe our management have to…. must….

Interviewer: Make it compulsory?

Interviewee: Yes, make it compulsory to speak English with the students and other staff.

Interviewer: Do you think it will distrupt your career if you don’t speak English?

Interviewee: I think it will because here in USM we have foreigner students international
level so it is important for us to speak English.

Interviewer: What are the importance of using English Language in your life?

Interviewee: In my life (interviewee thinks….)I think the importance is first thing I can
improve myself to speak English.Second, I can understand what others say. Usually
English has become very global.Anything it is so important.

Interviewer: Eventhough some people are academically good in English,but their


spoken English is not so good. How can we change this situation?

Interviewee: For me, this type of people should have confidentv to talk in English with
someone so that they can improve their spoken English.

Interviewer: People say it is important for us to use our mother tongue, so what is
your opinion regarding that?

Interviewee:For me English is also important but at the same time our mother is very
important too.So we must preserve our mother tongue like other countries like Japan you
know. The important is mother tongue.

Interviewer: Okay we move to last set of question.Can you tell me your personal
experience about the English Language use her in USM?
Interviewee: Personal experience…Haaah haaah.For me

Interviewer: You tell me what is your experience on usageof English here in USM.

Interviewee: My experience is.., here in USM you deal with foreigner. Their English is
different. Sometimes we talk with each other but cannot understand.

Interviewer: How do you think we can overcome that problem?

Interviewee: Based on my experience.When you deal with many foreiger student, day by
day you can improve your English, we can understand that.

Interviewer: How do you think USM can help you to improve students’ English
proficiency?

Interviewee: I think USM can help through (haahaa) maybe seminar…..

Interviewer: Send you for courses?

Interviewee: Ya ya yes.and I already join that.

Interviewer: What do you think USM can do more to improve students’ language
proficiency?

Interviewee: I think USM could do everything in English.

Interviewer: Can you explain what do you mean by everything?

Interviewee: Assignments should be done all in English. Must deal with the USM staff in
English. All the formal forms should be in English too.

communication here?

Interviewee: I use English during the lesson in my class.

Interviewer: How often do you use English?

Interviewee : Is it in USM?
Interviewer: Yes.

Interviewee:Almost everyday.

Interviewer: Okay.In what situation do you use English the most?

Interviewee: The most? Hmmmmmmm. I think the …when I communication with my


International friends.

Interviewer: What factors affect the usage of English on campus?

Interviewee: Factors.( Interviewee paused and laughed) For example?

Interviewer: For example, hmmm What factors makes you not to use English in the
campus?

Interviewee: (( ))

Interviewer: You are not using English all the time right? Why?

Interviewee: Why? ((ahaaa)) because the lecturers here don’t need…(()).I need English
just to listen to lectures.

Interviewer: Do you speak English with your Japanese friends?

Interviewee: No

Interviewer: Why don’t you speak English with your Japanese friends?

Interviewee: Because I feel better to communicate in my language.

Interviewer: Do you think it will distrupt your career if you don’t speak English?

Interviewee: No

Interviewer: What are the importance of using English Language in your life?

Interviewee: ( A long pause with laughter)


Interviewer: If you are good in English, how it will benefit you?

Interviewee:(nodded) haaa. I think I can understand the lecture easier and communicate
easily with International friends and improve motivation.

Interviewer: Eventhough some people are academically good in English,but their


spoken English is not so good. How can we change this situation?

Interviewee: I think opportunity is very important.So…they should communicate with


their friends in English

Interviewer: People say it is important for us to use our mother tongue,so your
mother tongue is Japanese right so what is your opinion regarding that?

Interviewee:Sorry again..

Interviewer: People say it is important for us to use our mother tongue,so your
mother tongue is Japanese and mine is Tamil right so what is your opinion
regarding that?

Interviewee:I think the mother tongue is important and English is important.I think both
are equally important.

Interviewer: Okay we move to last set of question.Can you tell me your personal
experience about the English Language use her in USM?

Interviewee: Personal experience…Haaah haaah.For me

Interviewer: You tell me what is your experience on usage of English here in USM.

Interviewer: (give hint) Do you think in USM, English is frequently used?

Interviewee: Yes

Interviewee: Hmmmmm… (Did not understand the question)


Interviewer: Do you think in USM people always use English or when you look at
the environment around us, is it always English everywhere?

Interviewee: Hmmmmm… Ya ya of course yes when I compare to my university in Japan.

Interviewer: How do you think USM can help you to improve students’ English
proficiency?

Interviewee: Yes but….

Interviewer: Who do you think help you to improve your English?

Interviewee: I think my friends

Interviewer: What do you think USM can do more to improve students’ language
proficiency?

Interviewee: I think USM could do do more signboards in English rather than Malay.
