What is a Dropped Object?
A dropped object may be defined as:

Any item or object that falls or has the


potential to fall from its previous position.

Unnecessary items, loose items, unsecured


items, poorly stacked items, pieces of
structure; even entire structures can fall.

What Causes Dropped Objects?
The key causes of Dropped Objects include:
 Poor Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

 Inadequate Design

 Poor Behaviors

 Inadequate Inspection, Repair and Maintenance

 Redundant / Neglected / Homemade Tools

 Failed Fixtures and Fittings / Corrosion / Vibration

 Overloading

 Incorrect or Improper Use of Equipment and Tools

 Inappropriate Procedures / Not Following Procedures

 Inadequately Stored / Secured Tools and Equipment

 Poor Housekeeping

 Environment (Weather)

 Planning and Operational Miscalculations

How Do I Avoid Hazards?
General
 Wear hard hats.
 Stack materials to prevent sliding, falling, or
collapse.
 Use protective measure such as toeboards and
debris nets

Overhead Work
Am I in Danger?
 Secure tools and materials to prevent them from
falling on people below.
You are at risk from falling objects when you are
 Barricade hazard areas and post warning signs
beneath cranes, scaffolds, etc., or where overhead
